Wells Fargo has predicted several turns in the U.S. economy in the coming months, including lower prices in food and gas, while the price of rent is expected to remain high. The bank's Global Investment Strategy team released a report on Monday offering several predictions based on data it has collected regarding U.S. inflation. The consumer price index (CPI) surged 9.1 percent in June , according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the largest gain in consumer prices since 1981. The Federal Reserve increased interest rates to fight inflation, raising interest by 0.75 percent in June. However, Wells Fargo said on Monday that there is a chance that inflation could drop as low as 5 percent in the next several months. "We would not be surprised to see the headline 12-month consumer price inflation reading post a sudden, large drop, maybe from 9.1 percent for June to 5 percent or 6 percent in the next two or three months," the investment institute team said. The predicted drop … [Read more...] about Wells Fargo says gas, food prices could fall while rent prices remain high

‘Mr. Robot’ Is a Compelling Hacker Drama for the Paranoid Internet Age
Elliot, the hacker protagonist of USA’s new drama Mr. Robot , looks like the dark corners of the Internet in human form. As played by Rami Malek, he’s pale and nervy-looking, and would be easy to miss in a crowd if it weren’t for his hollow stare. Elliot suffers from crippling social anxiety and mostly interacts with people by stalking them online, but he’s a well-meaning hacker, who despises his day job at a banking conglomerate and works at night to try to overthrow it. This, it seems, is the closest thing the 21st century gets for a hero: Despite airing on a typically stodgy network and being saddled with a ridiculous title, Mr. Robot is an angry, surprisingly effective screed against the current inequities of the world. Much of this is thanks to Malek’s outstanding lead performance, which shoulders the burden of ranty voice-over narration (typically the death knell for a show’s credibility) and invests Elliot with sympathy, despite the fact that he’s, well, a bit of a creep. … [Read more...] about ‘Mr. Robot’ Is a Compelling Hacker Drama for the Paranoid Internet Age
FBI’s search of Trump’s Florida estate: Why now?
By ZEKE MILLER, ERIC TUCKER and MICHAEL BALSAMO WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI’s unprecedented search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence ricocheted around government, politics and a polarized country Tuesday along with questions as to why the Justice Department — notably cautious under Attorney General Merrick Garland — decided to take such a drastic step. Answers weren’t quickly forthcoming. Agents on Monday searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, which is also a private club, as part of a federal investigation into whether the former president took classified records from the White House to his Florida residence, people familiar with the matter said. It marked a a dramatic escalation of law enforcement scrutiny of Trump, who faces an array of inquiries tied to his conduct in the waning days of his administration. From echoes of Watergate to the more immediate House probe of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, Washington, a city used to sleepy Augusts, reeled from … [Read more...] about FBI’s search of Trump’s Florida estate: Why now?
An Observer of Catastrophe
Sybille Bedford, a German-born writer who has long lived in England, is not one of the twentieth century's best writers, but she is one of its most attractive literary curiosities. Born before World War I, she witnessed much of the tragedy, and enjoyed much of the beauty, that her volatile age had to offer. Bedford spent her childhood and youth in her father's decrepit schloss in Baden, in the stuffy and well-upholstered Berlin residence of other relatives, in Fascist Italy, in high bohemia on the Côte d'Azur in the 1920s, and in England. It was a rich and strange life, and in each of her four largely autobiographical novels she rendered its off-color luster and subtle moral gradations with humor and a remarkable tolerance that in no way implies an absence of judgment. The twentieth century displayed the human circus at its most grotesque, and Bedford had a ringside seat throughout the performance. Bedford is not only a novelist but also the author of books on legal issues and … [Read more...] about An Observer of Catastrophe
Macrovariable projections in uncertain times
The Fed has raised its benchmark interest rate again by a whopping 0.75%. The Reserve Bank of India has also been forced to raise interest rates further but also take other steps. These decisions in the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting are based on what the members of the MPC see as the likely course of the economy in the months ahead. But, the trajectory of the world economy, and its likely impact on the Indian economy, is imponderable. So, Indian policymakers would face two crucial problems. First, the main uncertainty is due to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the resultant economic sanctions on Russia, as well as the zero-COVID-19 policy in China that repeatedly implements lockdowns leading to global supply bottlenecks. Second, policy has to base itself on data. If it is deficient, it introduces additional uncertainty, making projections for the future difficult and causing policies to fail. This will compound the problem that results from the global uncertainty. … [Read more...] about Macrovariable projections in uncertain times
‘Conservative’ Deputy PM Claims Tax Cuts Would Be ‘Electoral Suicide’
The frontrunner in the race to replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister Foreign Secretary Liz Truss’ plan to cut taxes would be “electoral suicide”, a chief ally of her opponent Rishi Sunak has warned. Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, has claimed that the central ethos of the Conservative party, cutting taxes, should be abandoned during the economic crisis if the party hopes to retain its majority in the Parliament for a record fifth term. “All the evidence tells us that, with inflation running high and energy bills the highest for decades, the winter will be extremely difficult. High prices and high bills will put pressure on the household budgets of hardworking people. Those pressures are well beyond the living memory of millions of voters, and will directly affect millions more,” Mr Raab wrote in The Times . “If we go to the country in September with an emergency budget that fails to measure up to the task, voters will not forgive us,” he wrote. “Such a failure will … [Read more...] about ‘Conservative’ Deputy PM Claims Tax Cuts Would Be ‘Electoral Suicide’
Wyclef Jean rules out another presidential run in Haiti after failed bid
Wyclef Jean has ruled out running for president again in Haiti, following a previous bid for office that failed to get off the ground. Immensely popular in his native country, the American-reared musician, 52, became an immediate front-runner in a field of more than 30 candidates when he entered the race in 2010. But his candidacy was derailed by a constitutional requirement that presidential candidates reside in Haiti for at least five years prior to an election. Jean claimed he had done so, though evidence indicated he was a U.S. resident most of that time. "Council officials said Jean, who left his homeland with his family at the age of 9 to live in the United States, did not meet residency requirements," Reuters reported. At the time, Jean vowed to appeal. "I cannot surrender now," he said in a statement after the decision was announced. "My vision of a nation renewed and redeveloped is a vision for which I am willing to fight." With political tumult currently gripping … [Read more...] about Wyclef Jean rules out another presidential run in Haiti after failed bid
