LOS ANGELES (AP) — A real estate developer was found guilty of bribery Monday for giving $500,000 in cash to a former Los Angeles city councilman and his special assistant in exchange for favors. A jury convicted Dae Yong Lee, 57, and a company he controlled of bribery, honest services wire fraud and falsifying records in federal investigations, a U.S. Department of Justice statement said. Federal prosecutors said that in 2017, Lee bribed ex-councilman Jose Huizar and assistant George Esparza for help in resolving a labor issue involving Lee's company's planned construction of a large commercial and condominium complex in the city’s burgeoning downtown district. At the time, Huizar chaired the city's powerful Planning and Land Use Management Committee. During a later federal corruption investigation, Lee altered accounting and tax records to falsely categorize the bribe as a legitimate business expenditure, prosecutors said. Lee could face up to 10 years in prison for … [Read more...] about LA developer convicted of bribing ex-city councilman

Great America amusement park will close after S.F. developer buys land
Great America’s days are numbered. The Santa Clara amusement park will shut down no later than 11 years from now after a Bay Area real estate developer bought the land the park sits in for $310 million. In a Monday press release, Cedar Fair, one of the nation’s largest theme park operators, said it sold the land at Great America — adjacent to Levi’s Stadium — to San Francisco developer Prologis in an attempt to shed debt. As part of the agreement, Prologis will lease the land back to Cedar Fair to continue operating the famed theme park “for a period of up to 11 years” before closing down for good when the lease expires. The Mercury News reported that lease agreement is for six year and includes an option for Cedar Fair to extend the agreement an additional five years. “We chose Prologis as our partner because of their deep ties in the Bay Area and their reputation for working closely with local communities on large developments,” Richard A. Zimmerman, Cedar Fair president … [Read more...] about Great America amusement park will close after S.F. developer buys land
10 Cities Where Homes Are Selling in 15 Days or Less
The housing market may finally be starting to cool, but homes are still selling faster than they did at this time last year. Homes were on the market for a median of 31 days in May, according to data from Realtor.com. That’s four days faster compared to the same period in 2021, though it’s significantly slower than the 21 days homes spent on the market at the beginning of the year. In a blog post, Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale said she expects the pace of home sales to continue to slow. “The big trend that we’ve seen just about nationwide is that homes are not sitting for very long anywhere,” Hale said. “We have relatively few homes on the market for sale, and up until recently, buyer demand has been really intense. But there have been some signs that demand is cooling.” So you want to buy a home. Do you know how much you can afford? This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man who shot and killed a passenger on a San Francisco subway commuter train will be charged with gun crimes but not homicide in what was “clearly" a case of self-defense after he was attacked with a knife, his attorney said Monday. Javon Green, 26, will face charges of having a concealed weapon in a public place and having a loaded gun in a public place, both felonies that possibly could be reduced to misdemeanors, attorney Randy Knox told the San Francisco Chronicle. Green was scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office declined to comment to the paper Monday. Messages from The Associated Press seeking comment weren't immediately returned. Green shot to death Nesta Bowen, 27, last Wednesday on a Muni train, his attorney said. Knox told the paper that his client was a security guard who carried a gun for … [Read more...] about Attorney: Man involved in train killing shot in self-defense

Ethnic media was devastated by Covid. Now publishers are struggling to self-fund.
Soon after the coronavirus pandemic hit New York City, Bijay Poudel had to make one of the hardest decisions in his professional life: to stop the print publication of Vishwa Sandesh , a local Nepalese newspaper. During the shutdown, advertisement revenue dried up, and the shops where the paper was normally distributed were now closed. While the pandemic has dealt a blow to the entire journalism industry — more than 100 local newsrooms have closed since — it’s been especially tough on small, ethnic news outlets that may not have the resources to stay afloat. Of the four Nepalese newspapers in New York City — Vishwa Sandesh; Everest Times , a biweekly; Khasokhas , a weekly; and Nepalaya , a biweekly — all have been forced to close their print editions and turn entirely digital. “Seeing only the digital version of the newspaper was painful to me,” Poudel, 48, publisher and editor-in-chief of the weekly paper, told NBC Asian America. “I can’t describe the feeling one … [Read more...] about Ethnic media was devastated by Covid. New York Supreme Court Strikes Down NYC Voting Rights for Foreign Nationals
The New York Supreme Court has struck down a New York City law, passed by Democrats late last year, that sought to give municipal voting rights to nearly a million foreign nationals. As Breitbart News has chronicled , Democrats on the 51-member New York City Council approved a plan last month that allows more than 800,000 foreign nationals with green cards, visas, and work permits the opportunity to vote in citywide elections so long as they have resided in the city for at least 30 consecutive days. Subsequently, black Americans in New York City, along with naturalized American citizens, the New York State Republican Party, the Republican National Committee (RNC), and Democrat officials like Councilman Robert Holden sued Mayor Eric Adams (D) and the city’s Board of Elections. The lawsuit noted that the New York State Constitution expressly states that voting rights are a privilege reserved for American “citizens.” In its decision on Monday, the Court ruled that the … [Read more...] about New York Supreme Court Strikes Down NYC Voting Rights for Foreign Nationals
Exclusive – Mike Pompeo: ‘We’re Going to Protect so Many Unborn Babies’
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appeared on Sirius XM’s Breitbart News Sunday and called the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade “historic” and “fantastic,” emphasizing that “We’re going to protect so many unborn babies.” Pompeo told host Matthew Boyle that the justices who brought about the majority decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case “got the Constitution right.” “We had five folks stand up and say this is what the Constitution actually says. I give President Trump full credit for delivering on the promises that he made,” he continued, referring to the 45th President making good on his promises to appoint conservative justices to the highest court in the country. He later told Boyle, “ This is important for the Constitution, it’s really important for America. It’s important to protect the women who have had to suffer this horrific procedure where a baby is killed. But the work has just begun, right? We’re … [Read more...] about Exclusive – Mike Pompeo: ‘We’re Going to Protect so Many Unborn Babies’
