Police on Long Island say an MS-13 gang member has put out a call to "take out a cop" in the Hempstead area. Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder on Thursday confirmed a pair of threats, one of which was a message stating "police have been making too many arrests and it's time to take the streets back and take out a cop like we do in El Salvador." An informant told police about the threat, according to Newsday, with the gang member saying the enterprise needs to "make a statement." The second threat suggested someone carrying guns and a mask is planning to execute an officer. Ryder said the department is "taking appropriate action to ensure the safety and security" of its officers and medics. "MS-13 wants to threaten a cop in this county. MS-13 is going to get an answer," Ryder said. Driver’s Family: Limo in Deadly NY Crash Wasn’t Roadworthy
The family of the limousine driver involved in a deadly crash in upstate New York says they believe he was unwittingly assigned an unsafe vehicle. The family of Scott Lisinicchia released a statement through their lawyer Tuesday asking the public to not jump to conclusions about the cause of the crash that killed 20 people Saturday. Investigators are trying to find out why the limousine ran through a stop sign at the bottom of a T-intersection on a rural road in Schoharie, 25 miles west of Albany. A lawyer for the limo company suggested the driver was unfamiliar with the roads. But the statement from the Lisinicchia family says they believe "that unbeknownst to him he was provided with a vehicle that was neither roadworthy nor safe for any of its occupants." The family's statement came just minutes after New York State Police officially released the identities and hometowns of all 20 people killed in the crash. Investigators plan to examine the mangled limo's data recorders and … [Read more...] about Driver’s Family: Limo in Deadly NY Crash Wasn’t Roadworthy
‘Apprentice’ Contestant’s Trump Defamation Suit Can Proceed in NY
A New York appeals court ruled Thursday that President Donald Trump isn't immune from a defamation lawsuit filed by a former "Apprentice" contestant who accused him of unwanted kissing and groping. A panel of judges on the Supreme Court Appellate Division said in their ruling, in a case brought by Summer Zervos, that the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution doesn't require trials in state court to be delayed until the president is out of office. Citing a U.S. Supreme Court ruling two decades ago in a case involving alleged sexual misconduct by President Bill Clinton, a majority of judges on the panel said presidents can be sued in state courts over things they did that aren't related to their official duties. "The current sitting President attempts to shield himself from consequences for his alleged unofficial misconduct by relying upon the constitutional protection of the Presidency," the judges said in an opinion written by Justice Dianne T. Renwick. "We reject defendant … [Read more...] about ‘Apprentice’ Contestant’s Trump Defamation Suit Can Proceed in NY
Limo Company Operator Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal NY Crash
The operator of a limousine company has pleaded not guilty to 20 counts each of criminally negligent homicide and second-degree manslaughter in a crash that killed 20 people in upstate New York last fall. Nauman Hussain, 29, operator of Prestige Limousine, was released on $450,000 bond after his arraignment in Schoharie County Court and will be subject to electronic monitoring until his Sept. 9 trial. He had been free on $150,000 bond since his arrest in October. Prestige's stretch limousine ran a stop sign at a T-intersection on Oct. 6 and crashed beside a country store, killing the driver, two pedestrians and 17 passengers bound for a birthday celebration. State police said the 2001 Ford Excursion limo should not have been on the road due to safety issues. The crash was the deadliest transportation disaster in the United States in a decade. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating, but a final report could be more than a year away. Defense attorney Lee Kindlon … [Read more...] about Limo Company Operator Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal NY Crash
