Embarrassing publicity that resulted in the firing of one Philadelphia television news anchor has now brought down her co-anchor, too.Larry Mendte, 51, has been fired by CBS3, not quite one month after FBI agents seized his home computer and not quite six months after the station fired his co-anchor, 36-year-old Alycia Lane, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.Lane’s earlier firing followed an altercation with New York City police and a mention in the New York Post’s gossip column about Lane’s reportedly being blasted in an e-mail from Suzy Shuster, the wife of cable sports anchor Rich Eisen, for sending Eisen photos of herself in a bikini. Mendte is now suspected of leaking information about Lane’s private life after it was allegedly discovered that he had accessed Lane’s private e-mail hundreds of times. Judge Axes Most of Defamation Suit Filed By Former Phila. News Anchor Alycia Lane Against TV Station
A state court judge in Philadelphia has dismissed all claims made by former KYW-TV news anchor Alycia Lane against the station and CBS in a defamation suit.However, some claims against her former co-anchor, Larry Mendte, remain, CBS reports. The Associated Press and the Daily Mail also have stories.Lane, who now works as a weekend news anchor in Los Angeles, sued over information that became public around the time of the station’s termination of her contract in 2008. Among other claims, she contended that station management should have done more to investigate her complaints that her email was being hacked.Mendte eventually admitted he was the culprit and also was fired by the station. He pleaded guilty in August 2008 to a federal felony charge concerning the email hacking and was sentenced to six months of house arrest, as the Philadlephia Inquirer reported at the time. A defamation suit filed by a fired Philadelphia news anchor against her former network and co-anchor is focusing on whether the two had a steamy relationship, as he claims, or, as she claims, he is a “sociopathic narcissist.”In recent developments, ex-KYW star Alycia Lane, 38, denies deposition claims by her married former colleague, Larry Mendte, that the two had a number of make-out sessions while both were still employed by CBS Broadcasting, including one in which Lane allegedly came out of her room wearing her bra but not her shirt after he drove her home, reports the New York Post.Mendte also was fired by the network and pleaded guilty in a criminal case in which he was accused of illegally gaining entry to Lane’s computer and leaking confidential material he obtained there.The defamation case is expected to go to trial in Philadelphia next month. Ex-News Anchor Pleads in E-Mail Snooping Case
Until a few months ago, Larry Mendte was a television news anchor at CBS 3 in Philadelphia. Today, the ex-anchor was in the news at his former station and throughout the country after he pleaded guilty in a criminal case in federal court to intentionally accessing the private e-mail accounts of his former co-anchor, Alycia Lane, at the CBS affiliate, which is also known as KYW-TV. Another Philadelphia TV News Anchor Spat Hits the Courts
Warring former news anchors at Philadelphia television stations are creating a litigation boom for at least one local law firm.In the latest lawsuit, filed yesterday in Pennsylvania Common Pleas Court, ex-NBC10 anchor Lori Delgado, 28, says she quit her job because of fear for her safety and her husband’s safety after alleged threatening actions by her former co-anchor, Vince DeMentri, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. In documents attached to Delgado’s filing, DeMentri says the two had a more than two-year consensual “romantic affiliation.”However, DeMentri, 44, who is pursuing an expected defamation case against NBC10, contends “This is nothing but a smokescreen. What is alleged is laughable and an outright lie,” the article continues.
