A Petition has been filed before the Rajasthan High Court, demanding a direction to the authorities to make emergency helpline number- 100 functional in Alwar, Rajasthan. The Petition, filed by one Mr. Ravi Saini through Advocate Aditya Jain, relies on the Supreme Court decision in the case of Prakash Singh & Ors. v. Union of India and Ors., wherein the Apex Court had issued several binding directions on police reforms. It now contends that non-functioning of the emergency number is a violation of the guidelines issued in that case. It further refers to Section 29 of the Rajasthan Police Act, 2007, which lists down the functions, duties, and responsibilities of police officers. Maintaining a functional emergency number, it said, formed a part of such duties to “enforce the law, and to protect life, liberty, property rights, dignity and human rights of the people”. A public interest litigation filed in the Bombay High Court has sought 24-hour helpline for the “protection of life of citizens for trade and transport” so that innocent people are not killed in the name of religion by cow vigilantes ahead of Bakr-Eid.The petitioner is Shadaab Patel, a businessman from Bandra.He sought directions to the state and its police to collect all information regarding cow vigilante groups in Maharashtra and steps to ensure safety and protection of innocent citizens from cow vigilantes.From Akhlaq’s lynching in Dadri to Junaid Khan’s lynching in a train from Ballabgarh to New Delhi, various incidents of mob violence across the country in the name of cow have been detailed in the PIL.It is stated that according to the petitioner’s own research, 23 people died due to such incidents since 2014.The PIL sought peaceful implementation of the Supreme Court order “suspending Centre’s notification banning sale and purchase of … [Read more...] about PIL Seeks 24-Hr Helpline For Protection Against Cow Vigilantes Ahead Of Bakr-Eid [Read Petition]

A total of 1,80,920 complaints were received through the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) during the last five months, and out of these 1,41,037 complaints were disposed of.During the period from February to June 2017, the NCH registered 30,587 complaints pertaining to e-commerce, which is the highest number of complaints in a sector, contributing to 17% of total complaints registered in the period i.e., 1,80,920.On receipt of complaints, NCH refers the complaints to the companies for redressal. In some cases, consumers are advised to file complaints in the Consumer Forum for redressal.During 2016-17, the NCH received 188 complaints from consumers where they have been asked to pay Service Charge by restaurants/ hotels.The complaints are taken up with the hotels and restaurants concerned.The Department of Consumer Affairs had issued guidelines on April 21, 2017, on fair trade practices related to charging of service charge from consumers by hotels/ restaurants.As per these … [Read more...] about National Consumer Helpline Disposes Of 1,41,037 Complaints In Five Months
