The majority of Midlands voters still cast their ballots on Election Day, but a growing minority vote early.In Douglas County, for example, more than 1 in 5 votes cast in the 2014 gubernatorial primary came early. As recently as 2006, the early vote represented 1 in 10 votes.More than 6,100 Douglas County residents have already requested early ballots for the May 15 Nebraska primary. In Sarpy County, that number is 4,431. For these go-getters in Nebraska, the 2018 primary has already begun. A blind dachshund and his guide dog were adopted in Virginia, but their journey might not be over
They came in as a pair and they had to go as a pair — a blind, 12-year-old dachshund and his guide dog, a 6-year-old pit bull. And this week the two found a new home.The blind dachshund is named OJ, and the pit bull is named Blue Dozer.The pair were brought last week to the Richmond Animal Care and Control shelter after their owner became homeless.On its Facebook page, the shelter said the owner was "unable to provide care for them." The shelter described the relationship between the two dogs as the "cutest (and saddest) thing."The two, the shelter said, are best friends and needed to be adopted together. Officials at the shelter wrote on Facebook, "OJ is blind and depends on Dozer to show him around." They went on, "We can't stand the cuteness and kindness these two share. Anyone willing to love a bonded pair of perfection?"Someone stepped forward and adopted the pair together. The League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha is offering several avenues for voters to familiarize themselves with local candidates.The organization has again published a voters guide, and copies are available at all Omaha Public Library branches and the Douglas County Election Commission office, 225 N. 115th St. The guide also is available online at omahalwv.org or vote411.org.Also available this election cycle are recorded candidate forums on KPAO (Cox Channel 22 or CenturyLink Channel 89).
