POLITICS 11/28/2018 05:10 pm ET The Senate has more women than ever, but Hyde-Smith won't be advancing their cause. By Emily Peck Rooting for gender equality is complicated. Just look at what’s happened in the U.S. Senate. On Tuesday, Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith won the runoff election for Mississippi’s Senate seat, lifting the number of women who will serve in that chamber in the next term to 24, a record number that’s one more than the current high of 23. It’s not even halfway to equality, but it certainly seems like a win for anyone who is rooting for female representation in politics. The problem is, Hyde-Smith is nearly impossible to root for if you actually care about gender equality. And if you oppose racism and white supremacy, she’s totally off the table, having distinguished herself in her run for Senate by making a racist joke about a public hanging and coming out in support of voter suppression. Who is Mark Carleton-Smith? New British Army chief and former Special Forces director
MARK Carleton-Smith was appointed the new head of the British Army in June 2018. The General and former SAS officer says he believes in a strong fighting force that's fully prepared for combat — but what do we know about him? Who is Gen Carleton-Smith? Gen Carleton-Smith, 54, is Chief of the General Staff of the British Army — the highest title in the Army and second only to the Chief of the Defence Staff, the post held by the professional head of the entire British Armed Forces. The Eton and Durham University-educated soldier was commissioned to the Irish Guards in September 1982 aged 18. He rose through the ranges to become a major aged 31 in 1995, having served in Northern Ireland and in the Gulf War. Carleton-Smith then saw action in Bosnia in the 1990s when he was an SAS squadron commander. His stellar rise through the Army ended in June 2018 when he was promoted to general and succeeded General Sir Nick Carter as Chief of the General Staff. Former Miss Universe winner dies aged 45

Chelsi Smith died on Saturday, having been diagnosed with liver cancer in spring 2017, a family spokesman said. She started her beauty queen career in 1994 with the Miss Galveston County crown. Ms Smith went on to earn the Miss Texas USA and Miss USA crown the following year. A family statement said Ms Smith is the only biracial woman to ever win all three crowns. The Houston Chronicle reported Ms Smith was also the only Texan to become Miss Universe. Her family said a public memorial service is planned for October in Houston.
