Vietnam pledges to promote ASEAN+3 and EAS cooperation

On August 1, the ASEAN + 3 Senior Officials Meeting (China, Japan and the Republic of Korea) and the Senior Officials Meeting with the 8 East Asian Summit (EAS) partners (China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, the US, Russia) were held in Singapore to discuss preparations for the 19th ASEAN + 3 Foreign Ministers Meeting and the 8th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting (8th EAS FMM), set to take place on August 4. Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of ASEAN-Vietnam SOM, led a Vietnamese delegation to the meetings. In his speech, Dung affirmed Vietnam's commitment to accelerate the substantial and effective ASEAN + 3 and EAS process. He said he hopes that the partners would continue to support the central role of the regional bloc and redouble their efforts to consolidate an open, transparent and rule-based regional architecture for peace, stability and development in the region. EAS Foreign Ministers Meeting agrees to reinforce marine cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh led the Vietnamese delegation to the meeting. The ministers agreed to strengthen marine cooperation, including dealing with waste at sea. They voiced concerns about the recent militarisation activities and complex developments in the East Sea, and asked the involved parties to increase dialogue and cooperation on the basis of respecting international law. The ministers also affirmed support for peace, stability and denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula and welcomed the positive outcomes of the Inter-Korean and US-Democratic People’s Republic of Korea summits.
