Israel Wins Eurovision Song Contest on Jerusalem Day

JERUSALEM, Israel — Israel won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday evening, bringing the coveted prize home on the day the country celebrates “Jerusalem Day,” in observance of the 51st anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem. The song, “Toy,” performed by Netta, was a fan favorite in the weeks leading up to the contest in Lisbon, Portugal.The song’s lyrics emphasize themes of women’s empowerment, and include a reference to Wonder Woman, who is famously portrayed onscreen by Israeli actress Gal Gadot.It was Israel’s fourth win overall and the first since 1998, when the transvestite singer Dana International won with “Diva.” The win means that Jerusalem will likely host next year’s contest — which, to some Israelis, may be even more exciting news than the relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem on Monday. A naked man was spotted riding a bike on Highway 101 near Alum Rock in San Jose Wednesday morning, prompting several 911 calls from drivers around 9:30 a.m. Investigative SF Mayor: 'There’s More Feces ... Pakistan Senate Passes Resolution Condemning Geert Wilders’ Mohammed Cartoon Contest

The Senate of Pakistan has passed a resolution this week to condemn a cartoon contest of the Islamic prophet Mohammed organised by Dutch firebrand and anti-Islamisation campaigner Geert Wilders. The resolution, which was signed by leaders of Pakistan’s political parties, accuses Wilders of “inciting hatred, racial prejudice, unrest, conflict and insecurity in a world that has already seen much bloodshed, racism, extremism, intolerance and Islamophobia”, Pakistani English-language newspaper The News International reports.“Since under the Constitution of Pakistan, 1973, Islam is the state religion and it is the responsibility of the State to preserve, protect and promote Islam, therefore, it must stand up and articulate the general will of the Muslims of Pakistan against the proposed competition,” the resolution adds. The bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice U. U. Lalit and Justice K. M. Joseph was hearing BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay’s PIL to provide adequate infrastructure to setup Special Courts to decide criminal cases against People’s Representatives, Public Servants and Members of Judiciary.
