Jake Paltrow on Taking a Fresh Look at the Trial of Adolf Eichmann in ‘June Zero’

July 2, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

Click here to read the full article. “The Good Night” helmer Jake Paltrow returns to Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival with “June Zero,” his first foreign-language production. In the film – picked up for sales by ICM Partners and Films Boutique – he takes a closer look at the trial and execution of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann, hanged in Israel in 1962. “My father [actor Bruce Paltrow, who passed away in 2002] was a World War II history obsessive. Some of my earliest memories of watching television are of ‘The World at War,’ which later became something we watched together every year. It was all deeply rooted in his Jewishness,” Paltrow tells Variety ahead of the film’s world premiere. Dowry: what the data says and what it doesn’t

July 7, 2014 by www.thehindu.com

Last week, a Bench of the Supreme Court >instructed the country’s police to not make automatic arrests in dowry harassment cases without first ascertaining viability. “The fact that Section 498-A is a cognizable and non-bailable offence has lent it a dubious place of pride amongst the provisions that are used as weapons rather than shield by disgruntled wives. The simplest way to harass is to get the husband and his relatives arrested under this provision,” the court observed. The order, and its phrasing, has led to a fair amount of outrage; both from men rights’ activists for whom the misuse of 498-A has long been a rallying point and from some women’s rights activists who have argued that popular male perception – and the Court – overstates the problem. But what does the data say? The Court referred to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data to show that 498-A cases are growing very fast. Others, like >Sahil Bhalla at the news website Scroll , have attempted to show … [Read more...] about Dowry: what the data says and what it doesn’t

DWP creams off £62 a month from 2million Brits – full list of 100 worst-hit areas

July 2, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Two million poor Brits are still having an average of £62-a-month creamed off their benefits to pay back loans and debts. Some 45% of Universal Credit claimants had “deductions” taken by the Department for Work and Pensions in February this year. And nearly half of those (43%) were to repay advances people take out to bridge the five-week wait for the first UC payment. Campaigners say the five-week wait drives people to food banks and must be axed. Figures handed to the Mirror show some of England’s poorest communities are far worse hit than others. In Middlesbrough 60% of all claimants had a deduction in February, taking £497,000 out of the pockets of 7,800 local claimants. ( Image: Getty Images) It was followed by Blackpool South (59%), Knowsley, Redcar (both 58%), Hartlepool, Liverpool Walton and Birkenhead (all 57%). By comparison just 37% of claimants suffer deductions in Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey ’s Suffolk Coastal seat. Some 41% … [Read more...] about DWP creams off £62 a month from 2million Brits – full list of 100 worst-hit areas

SBI’s gold loan portfolio crosses ₹1 lakh-crore mark

July 1, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

State Bank of India’s (SBI) gold-loan portfolio has crossed the ₹1 lakh- crore mark for the first time, chairman Dinesh Khara said on Friday. The lender, which has a 24% market share in gold loans, is bullish on growth in the segment as the asset class provides investors a safe investment option amid rising inflation. "Last week, we crossed ₹1 lakh-crore portfolio in gold loans for the first time. In the first quarter of the current year, we have seen much better growth as compared to what we have achieved in the past. I expect that in the current year we should be in a position to grow well in this particular segment," Mr. Khara told reporters on Friday. He said in case of inflationary conditions, gold, as an asset class, becomes more favourite. "Normally, during such a period when gold is a preferred asset class, there is also a felt need for monetising this asset class. That's why we feel there is much opportunity for this asset class," he said. On wealth management, Mr. … [Read more...] about SBI’s gold loan portfolio crosses ₹1 lakh-crore mark

Worldview with Suhasini Haidar | What were the outcomes of the G7 Summit?

July 1, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Summit of G-7 leaders, the group of the world’s “most industrialised economies”, was held in Germany this week, where India along with Indonesia and a few other countries, was a special invitee. Last week, we told you about the BRICS summit of emerging economies, that was once seen as a complementary and now a potentially competitive grouping to the G-7. What they have in common is that the agenda is driven by the economy. A bit about the G-7: 1. The Grouping began as the Group of Six in 1975- with a meeting of leaders of US, UK, West Germany, Italy, France and Japan, as a result of the Oil crisis and global currency exchange issues that decided to meet annually. 2. Canada joined in 1976- making it the G-7. The EU leadership is always invited to G-7 meets 3. In the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union and reunification of Germany, Russia was added to make it the G-8. However, after Russian wars with Georgia in 2008, and the annexation of Crimea in 2014, the club … [Read more...] about Worldview with Suhasini Haidar | What were the outcomes of the G7 Summit?

Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?

July 2, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Halfway through the second episode of The Midwich Cuckoos I found myself wishing I didn’t have a science degree. For those unfamiliar with Sky ’s show, the source novel by John Wyndham, or one of the pair of movie adaptations, after the village of Midwich mysteriously falls asleep for a day, all the women of childbearing age suddenly find themselves to be pregnant. The resulting children have some disturbing features and abilities. They are the cuckoos of the title. The Sky adaptation seeks a female perspective to the story, which is very much in its favour. It’s mostly the men whom we see trying to deal with the problems presented by the cuckoos in the book, which is perhaps its biggest flaw given they’re not the ones who have to deal with being used as human reed warblers (a favoured cuckoo host in Britain). But modernising it clearly presented the makers with some challenges. Abortion is legal today . It wasn’t in 1957 when the book was published. And then … [Read more...] about Why do writers and filmmakers keep using lazy science?

Moreover, peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, during June this year remained at an all-time high of 209.80 GW (on June 8). The peak power supply stood at 191.24 GW in June 2021, and 164.98 GW in June 2020. Sanctions War: Germans Told to Prepare for Gas Shortages

July 2, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

BERLIN (AP) – Fearing Russia might cut off natural gas supplies, the head of Germany’s regulatory agency for energy called on residents Saturday to save energy and to prepare for winter, when use increases. Federal Network Agency President Klaus Mueller urged house and apartment owners to have their gas boilers and radiators checked and adjusted to maximize their efficiency. “Maintenance can reduce gas consumption by 10 per cent to 15 per cent,” he told Funke Mediengruppe, a German newspaper and magazine publisher. Mueller said residents and property owners need to use the 12 weeks before cold weather sets in to get ready. He said families should start talking now about “whether every room needs to be set at its usual temperature in the winter — or whether some rooms can be a little colder.” The appeal came after Russia reduced gas flows to Germany, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia earlier this month, as European Union countries scramble to refill storage … [Read more...] about Sanctions War: Germans Told to Prepare for Gas Shortages

New labour codes do not recognise legitimate rights of workers: Sivankutty

July 2, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Labour minister V.Sivankutty said here on Saturday that many of the provisions in the four labour codes introduced by the Centre by integrating 29 labour laws went against the interests of the State and failed to recognise the legitimate rights of employees while some of them even went against the principles approved by the International Labour Organisation. Delivering the inaugural address at a workshop organised by the department to frame rules on the basis of the Central labour codes, he said the categorisation of employees as highly- skilled, skilled, semi- skilled and unskilled would make fixing of minimum wages a complex procedure. “The new Code on Wages has done away with the eligibility of employees in units with a staff strength of more than 10 to be paid bonus under the Bonus Act. Likewise, the right of an employee to full wages if the period of suspension exceeds 180 days has been taken away”. The Minister said the social security code and occupational safety code had … [Read more...] about New labour codes do not recognise legitimate rights of workers: Sivankutty
