BRITS on Universal Credit are being slapped with £100 fines because bungling officials still haven't changed out of date NHS prescription forms. New slips with a tick box for people on Universal Credit have been in the pipeline at the Department of Health for over a year but STILL haven't been rolled out despite almost a million now being on the new benefits system. Mum-of-two, Kareena, from Leicestershire, said she'd been given at least 15 fines of up to £100 for her prescriptions since being on Universal Credit, despite showing evidence every month she was able to get them free. The 47-year-old told The Sun Online: "Every month I was getting a fine as my prescription delivery service was apparently checking the wrong box - I'm on Universal Credit but there's no box for that. "I'm having to watch every penny, I couldn't afford the fines. Whoever is designing these forms needs to change them now. "I was so worried at having to call them up every month, it's not good." … [Read more...] about Brits on Universal Credit slapped with £100 fines over out of date NHS prescription forms – here’s how to avoid them

Tina Davidson, 38, from Aberdeenshire, is on track to become homeless with her three-year-old boy Jake within weeks, after being unable to keep up with her debts after going onto the new benefits system. The Scottish mum, who is suffering from depression and anxiety and is currently signed off sick, has been given three weeks to pay over £2000 or the home she’s lived in for almost 20 years will be repossessed. I’m not asking for anything for free but I need a bit of help or I’m going to lose my home." TOO often this summer, British families have jetted off to Spanish resorts for a relaxing, hassle-free break in the sun only to be torn apart by a tragic drowning. The number of deaths in swimming pools since July stands at six (that we know of) and a top expert has now warned shoddy security and substandard designs make them among the most dangerous in Europe. "Sadly every year toddlers die in pools abroad," Allen Wilson, who has spent more than two decades advising tour operators and businesses on safety, told Sun Online. He added: "As far as Tenerife goes, I have found lifeguards leaving their posts at a resort whilst water features were still operating and being used by children. "Swimming pools in the Canary Islands and Tenerife have the potential to be among the most dangerous in Europe." Allan Howell's family found that out in the most horrific way possible when the 66-year-old drowned on a break to Costa Daurada, Catalonia, at the start of the month. They claimed no lifeguards … [Read more...] about Spanish holiday pools becoming ‘most dangerous in Europe’, expert warns as granddad who drowned in Tenerife is latest victim to be named

A girl from Newark doesn’t belong in a place like Harvard, she thought, as she marveled at how green the elms were, how quaint the cobblestone streets. Back home, where her family lives in a modest house bought from Habitat for Humanity, there wasn’t always money for groceries, and the world seemed gray, sirens blaring at all hours. Her parents, who immigrated to the New York area from Colombia before she was born, spoke Spanish at home. It was at school that Barros learned English. A petite 5-foot-2 with high cheekbones and a head of model-worthy hair, Barros found out in an e-mail that she’d been accepted to Harvard — a full … [Read more...] about What is it like to be poor at an Ivy League school?
