Washington, DC, teen’s shooting death not ‘centered around race,’ police chief criticizes misinformation

January 11, 2023 by www.foxnews.com

close Video Violent teen crime wave sweeping country Pastor John MacArthur tells 'The Ingraham Angle' the young in this society have smashed every divine restraint down. Metropolitan police in Washington, D.C. gave an update Tuesday morning on a shooting that left 13-year-old Karon Blake, who was accused of breaking into cars over the weekend, dead in the city's Northeast area. Chief Robert Contee spoke about the Saturday morning shooting for the first time on Tuesday to address the "misinformation" and "assumptions" about the incident floating around the community. "There's been too much misinformation swirling around this incident, too many people have made assumptions about this case, and it is unfair to the grieving family," Contee said. "Spreading of inaccurate information is dangerous, reckless, and has the potential to adversely impact the investigation and the relationships in our community." He added that the department … [Read more...] about Washington, DC, teen’s shooting death not ‘centered around race,’ police chief criticizes misinformation

DC Official Claims Crime ‘Is Not’ a Crisis After Rand Paul Staffer Stabbing

March 29, 2023 by www.breitbart.com

Days after Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) staffer was brutally stabbed over the weekend, Washington, DC, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson testified before Congress on Wednesday that the soaring crime rate in the district is not a crisis. Overall crime has soared across the district by 22 percent since 2022, D.C. crime statistics from Wednesday show. Sex abuse is up 110 percent. Homicides are up 19 percent. Property crime is up 27 percent, and motor vehicle theft has soared 108 percent. Mendelson dismissed soaring crime statistics by claiming before House Oversight Committee, “There is not a crime crisis in Washington, DC.” Mendelson previously spearheaded a district law that would have reduced punishment for criminals. That bill was vetoed by the mayor but the council overrode the mayor’s veto with a dominant number of votes. Congressional Republicans ultimately prevented it from becoming law. “There is not a crime crisis in Washington, D.C.” – Democrat D.C. Anonymous donations to Ginni Thomas questioned: “So much wrong with this”

March 29, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

Anonymous donations of almost $600,000 were made to the group Crowdsourcers for Culture and Liberty, led by Ginni Thomas, a conservative activist and the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Social media users highlighted a potential conflict of interest and some called for an investigation. Democratic lawmakers Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi are among those tweeting about the issue. Questions are being asked about anonymous donations to a group led by Virginia "Ginni" Thomas, a conservative activist and the wife of Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas . The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Crowdsourcers for Culture and Liberty had received almost $600,000 from anonymous sources. Thomas, an attorney, has been the subject of controversy because of conversations she had with Mark Meadows in the weeks after the 2020 election. In text messages to Meadows, who was then White House chief of staff, Thomas encouraged … [Read more...] about Anonymous donations to Ginni Thomas questioned: “So much wrong with this”

A Trump-Backed Veteran Ran Hard to the Right, Only to Be Outflanked

July 25, 2022 by www.nytimes.com

Joe Kent, a square-jawed Trump devotee running for a House seat in Washington State, is in a bit of a pickle. Kent has campaigned as a “Stop the Steal”-style candidate on Donald Trump’s “America First” platform, positions that apparently caught the eye of the former president, who has endorsed him. Kent insists the 2020 election was rigged, and has rationalized the violence on Jan. 6, 2021, by claiming that an otherwise peaceful crowd was infiltrated by Deep State agents provocateurs. In September, he spoke at a rally in Washington, D.C., in support of people accused of storming the Capitol, urging the release of what he called “political prisoners.” But in recent weeks, far-right figures led by Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist who has spoken admiringly of Adolf Hitler, have started an online drumbeat claiming that Kent, a retired Green Beret and C.I.A. paramilitary officer who has a fistful of Bronze Stars, is actually a deep-state denizen himself. Kent’s wife, … [Read more...] about A Trump-Backed Veteran Ran Hard to the Right, Only to Be Outflanked

Meet the Canine Officers Guarding American Agriculture

July 23, 2022 by www.nytimes.com

DULLES, Va. — As a throng of travelers at Dulles International Airport elbowed their way to the baggage carousel on a recent sweltering afternoon, a federal officer zeroed in on a tired woman, sniffed her suitcases and sat down. Hair-E, a six-year veteran at Dulles and a honey-colored beagle, glanced knowingly at his human handler, Don Polliard. “Do you have any meat or fresh vegetables or fruit in that bag?” Mr. Polliard, an agriculture specialist for Customs and Border Protection, asked the passenger. Yes, she reluctantly conceded. Contraband, just as Hair-E suspected. As Mr. Polliard instructed the traveler and her husband to take their many bags and go through a secondary round of inspections, Hair-E lurched toward a red plastic bag a carousel away, already following the lure of the next scent. As a member of the government’s Beagle Brigade, Hair-E is one of 180 hounds deployed at airports, border crossings and postal depots across the country. Clad in blue vests … [Read more...] about Meet the Canine Officers Guarding American Agriculture

How Intestinal Bacteria May Make You Fat

July 6, 2010 by www.newsweek.com

The grapefruit diet, the Atkins diet, low-fat diets, low-carb diets, the cabbage-soup diet: they and all the other fad diets make the health establishment roll its collective eyes. The only way to lose weight, says every reputable textbook and medical society, is to burn more calories than you consume. And if you are adding pounds, the reason is, pure and simple, that you are consuming more calories than you expend. Weight gain is a straightforward matter of calories in minus calories out, they maintain. But while the basic math is right, the meaning of "calories in" isn't what we've been taught, according to a growing pile of studies of chubby mice, obese people, svelte mice, and slim people. The calories that matter are not simply the number printed on grocery items, fast-food menus, and those guilt-inducing signs next to Starbucks' brownies. The calories that count are those extracted by your digestive enzymes and—as more and more research is showing—the trillions of bacteria in … [Read more...] about How Intestinal Bacteria May Make You Fat

Biden Blames Climate Change For Burned Out Forests — But His Admin Caused One Of The Biggest Wildfires In History

March 14, 2023 by dailycaller.com

President Joe Biden blamed climate change and Mother Nature’s “wrath” for wildfires in the past two years in an interview with The Daily Show Monday, failing to note that a historic blaze in New Mexico was started by his administration. “Mother Nature let her wrath be seen over the last two years,” said Biden, apparently referencing the above-average number of acres burnt in the 2022 wildfire season. “For example, I have travelled on helicopter over more forest area burned to the ground than the entire state of Maryland.” The president toured the Caldor wildfire in California by helicopter in 2021, but opted to fly by New Mexico’s Hermit’s Peak fire, the largest in the state’s history, in Air Force One, according to Reuters. The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) issued a report in June taking responsibility for the Hermit’s Peak fire, which grew out of control from a controlled burn initiated by the USFS, according to The Washington Post. The USFS report concluded that … [Read more...] about Biden Blames Climate Change For Burned Out Forests — But His Admin Caused One Of The Biggest Wildfires In History

Any Russian victory could be perilous, Ukraine’s Zelenskyy warns

March 29, 2023 by www.nbcnews.com

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Tuesday that unless his nation wins a drawn-out battle in a key eastern city, Russia could begin building international support for a deal that could require Ukraine to make unacceptable compromises. He also invited the leader of China , long aligned with Russia, to visit. If Bakhmut fell to Russian forces, their president, Vladimir Putin , would “sell this victory to the West, to his society, to China, to Iran,” Zelenskyy said in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press. “If he will feel some blood — smell that we are weak — he will push, push, push,” Zelenskyy said in English, which he used for virtually all of the interview. The leader spoke to the AP aboard a train shuttling him across Ukraine, to cities near some of the fiercest fighting and others where his country’s forces have successfully repelled Russia’s invasion. The AP is the first news organization to travel extensively with Zelenskyy since the … [Read more...] about Any Russian victory could be perilous, Ukraine’s Zelenskyy warns

Russia stops sharing information on nuclear forces with the U.S.

March 29, 2023 by www.nbcnews.com

A senior Russian diplomat said Moscow had suspended sharing information about its nuclear forces with the United States, including notices about missile tests. Sergei Ryabkov, Russia's deputy foreign minister said in remarks carried by news agencies that Moscow had halted all information exchanges with Washington after previously suspending its participation in the last remaining nuclear arms pact with the U.S . Last month, Russian president Vladimir Putin suspended the New START treaty, saying Russia could not accept U.S. inspections of its nuclear sites under the agreement at a time when Washington and its Nato allies had openly declared Russia’s defeat in Ukraine as their goal. Moscow emphasised that it was not withdrawing from the pact altogether and would continue to respect the caps on nuclear weapons. The Russian foreign ministry initially said Moscow would keep notifying the U.S. about planned test launches of its ballistic missiles, but Ryabkov’s statement … [Read more...] about Russia stops sharing information on nuclear forces with the U.S.

North Korea says U.S. ruining mood of detente ahead of Trump-Kim summit

May 6, 2018 by www.nbcnews.com

With just weeks to go before President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are expected to hold their first-ever summit , Pyongyang on Sunday criticized what it called “misleading” claims that Trump’s policy of maximum political pressure and sanctions are what drove the North to the negotiating table. The North’s official news agency quoted a Foreign Ministry spokesman warning the claims are a “dangerous attempt” to ruin a budding detente on the Korean Peninsula after Kim’s summit late last month with South Korean President Moon Jae-in . At the summit, Kim agreed to a number of measures aimed at improving North-South ties and indicated he is willing to discuss the denuclearization of the peninsula, though exactly what that would entail and what conditions the North might require have not yet been explained. Trump and senior U.S. officials have suggested repeatedly that Washington’s tough policy toward North Korea, along with pressure on its main trading … [Read more...] about North Korea says U.S. ruining mood of detente ahead of Trump-Kim summit
