A highly placed Kremlin official has secretly approached the West to help end the Ukraine invasion, it was claimed last night. The secret member of Vladimir Putin ’s elite is said to have revealed the Kremlin is in panic and desperate for the bloody war to end. Astonishing claims about the move were made in a report circulated to Western intelligence agencies. It is believed senior officers and officials close to Putin are alarmed by biting Western sanctions and the failing economy caused by war. Some Kremlin figures are also concerned about the increasingly alarming risks being taken such as fighting at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The approach is likely to have been made to CIA contacts or Western diplomats, behind Putin’s back. The mood in the Kremlin is said to be 'panic' as continuing sanctions invoke fear for Russia's future ( Image: REUTERS) The Daily Mirror understands the leaked “situation report” is being taken seriously by … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s ‘panic-stricken’ officials in secret bid to end bloody war in Ukraine

Putin claim U.S. is dragging out war isn’t crazy, military expert says
Claims made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United States is intentionally prolonging the Russia-Ukraine conflict may not be as implausible as described, says one U.S. military veteran and journalist. In a speech this week, Putin called out "Western globalist elites" who he said are "provoking chaos, inciting old and new conflicts," and attempting "to preserve the hegemony and power that is slipping out of their hands." He added that the situation in Ukraine shows the U.S. is "trying to prolong the conflict." Sean Spoonts , a U.S. Navy veteran and editor-in-chief of Special Operations Forces Report (SOFREP), told Newsweek that President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky seem to have separate policy goals in mind. "It seems like while Ukraine would like to end the war quickly and decisively defeat Russian forces and drive them out of their country, U.S. policy almost seems designed to prolong the conflict hoping to bring about the … [Read more...] about Putin claim U.S. is dragging out war isn’t crazy, military expert says
Six-month delay in delivery of two stealth frigates by Russia due to war in Ukraine
There is up to six months delay in the delivery of the two Krivak or Talwar-class stealth frigates under construction for the Indian Navy in Russia due to the war in Ukraine. The first frigate is now expected to be delivered by November 2023 and the second one by April 2024, according to Alexey Rakhmanov, Director-General of United Shipbuilding Corporation of Russia Earlier, there was about nine-month delay in the schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first frigate, Tushil, was launched into water in October 2021. “We see no more than six-month delay basically due to the fact that some equipment which we have ordered has fallen under sanctions... We do not see any sort of manufacturing issues... We don’t expect any further issues. Some catch of the schedule is also expected because we really value our relationship with our customer and we try to shrink the delay due to the obvious force majeure situation starting February this year,” Mr. Rakhmanov told the visiting media at … [Read more...] about Six-month delay in delivery of two stealth frigates by Russia due to war in Ukraine
The 2022 Summer Movie Season Affirmed That Movies Are Here to Stay
Click here to read the full article. Not very long into the pandemic, a collective tremor of dread passed through the movie industry: Was this the beginning of the end? It wasn’t the first time Hollywood had been roiled by a crisis mentality. The most obvious precursor was the rise of television in the late ’40s and ’50s, which resulted in movies turning themselves into over-the-top widescreen spectacles — a frantic race to be big, bigger, biggest. But I think it’s fair to say that for much of 2020 and 2021, the fear about what was going to happen to movies was nothing less than existential. Would they survive? Would movie theaters, those seductive mass cocoons that ruled for a century, now dwindle and die, their marquees standing as relics of a lost civilization, like something out of a zombie film? Would audience enthusiasm for movies wither on the vine? Not because it had disappeared, but because it had evolved toward a new mode of entertainment consumption, a revolution … [Read more...] about The 2022 Summer Movie Season Affirmed That Movies Are Here to Stay
Nuclear war between Russia and US would cause a global famine – killing five billion
Expert scientists have revealed the devastating impact of nuclear war between Russia and the US in bombshell new research. Predictions say that a global famine would be caused and around five billion people would be killed . Lead author Professor Lili Xia, of Rutgers University in New Jersey, studied the disastrous consequences by using simulations. He said: "The data tell us one thing. We must prevent a nuclear war from ever happening." The prospect of nuclear war remains unlikely, but continued muscle-flexing from Russia and the likes of China and North Korea sets alarm bells ringing. Russia is now set to give out to the likes of North Korea and Iran "the most modern types of weapons, from small arms to armoured vehicles and artillery to combat aviation and unmanned aerial vehicles," according to Vladimir Putin . W.H.O. Chief Tedros: World Ignoring Ethiopian Civil War Disaster Due to Racism
The director-general of the World Health Organization (W.H.O.), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, accused heads of state on Wednesday of racism for failing to address the ongoing “manmade” humanitarian disaster in his native Ethiopia, saying the Russian invasion of Ukraine is getting more attention due to the skin color of Ethiopians. Ethiopia descended into civil war in November 2020 between the ruling government – led by ethnic Oromo Abiy Ahmed, a Nobel Peace Prize winner – and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), a Marxist former ruling party that Abiy designated a terrorist organization last year. Tedros, an ethnic Tigray, served in multiple roles in TPLF governments before being elected to run the W.H.O., including health minister and foreign minister. As part of that war, the Abiy government has blockaded the northern Tigray region, affecting not only TPLF militia members but the general civilian population of the region. The blockade has resulted in mass starvation and … [Read more...] about W.H.O. Chief Tedros: World Ignoring Ethiopian Civil War Disaster Due to Racism
‘Echoes,’ Starring Michelle Monaghan as Warring Twins, Is a Soap Tailor-Made for Netflix Binging: TV Review
Click here to read the full article. It’s all too easy to understand the appeal of a show like “ Echoes ” to a streaming service like Netflix. From creator Vanessa Gazy and showrunners Quentin Peeples and Brian Yorkey (“13 Reasons Why”), “Echoes” feels like “Firefly Lane” and “Behind Her Eyes” collided to create a melodrama as deeply strange as it is quickly ingestible. Its seven episodes fly by fast enough to distract from the fact that they only barely make sense. It’s twisty, but repetitive, making sure every plot point gets several scenes to marinate. All the while, Michelle Monaghan throws herself into the challenge of portraying twins with the delirious freedom that the show’s hyperbolic framework allows. Once, “Echoes” might have been a made-for-TV movie; now, it’s a limited series built to set up camp in Netflix’s Top 10 until another version of the same (maybe Emily Deschanel’s upcoming “Devil in Ohio”?) knocks it out. Leaning into uneasy thriller vibes with an … [Read more...] about ‘Echoes,’ Starring Michelle Monaghan as Warring Twins, Is a Soap Tailor-Made for Netflix Binging: TV Review

Moscow covered in poisonous smog as officials fear telling Putin about forest fires
Moscow has been blanketed in thick noxious smog and some fear forest fires were left to rage because officials were too scared to tell Vladimir Putin . Claims say regional officials were too scared to admit to Russian President Vladimir Putin the scale of the forest infernos. The pollution was also made worse because a large number of firefighters were deployed to the war in Ukraine , says state media. A thick cloud of pungent smog descended on the Russian capital as temperatures hit close to 30 degrees centigrade. St Basil’s Cathedral and other landmarks were shrouded in smoke and became absent from the skyline. Authorities in the Russian capital advised residents to wear face masks to protect themselves from the smog and The Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz) blamed authorities in the Ryazan region for failing to keep the fires under control. Nuremberg in Retrospect
In the April *Atlantic Monthly* I raised doubts as to certain aspects of the then uncompleted Nuremberg trial. Since that time I have had a chance to profit from comments of Mr. Justice Jackson, Professor Sheldon Glueck, Professor Max Radin, Professor Lon Fuller, an anonymous contributor to the July, 1946, *Law Quarterly Review*, and other writers; I have also read reports of the trial and have studied a summary of the judgment. This further investigation has led me to resolve some of my earlier doubts, and I hope that if I state my own change of views I may contribute to the thinking of others who are concerned about the great questions raised by this trial. The doubt which seemed to critics of the Nuremberg trial most fundamental was whether the defendants could properly be held to answer a charge that they had engaged in "the crime of aggressive war." Was there any such substantive offense? Many who replied affirmatively contended that "the crime of aggressive war" was no … [Read more...] about Nuremberg in Retrospect
