This South African woman turned 128 this week and with it may have become the world's oldest living person. Johanna Mazibuko, who resides in South Africa's North West province, reportedly celebrated her 128th birthday on Wednesday, May 11. Born on a maize farm, she was the eldest of 12 siblings, three of whom are still alive today. Despite being illiterate, she told News24: "We lived so well on the farms. There were no problems." Though she cannot remember her childhood well, she recalls the time there was a locust infestation on the farms. She said: "There were ones we could catch and eat. It was like you are eating meat. "We would just fry them and eat them like that, just on their own." She said, however, that her diet when she was growing up was mostly fresh milk and wild spinach. Aurora fires police Chief Vanessa Wilson; chief was subject of “smear campaign,” her attorney says
The Aurora city manager fired the city’s police chief Wednesday, saying he had general concerns about her leadership and that areas of the department needed “refocused attention.” The decision follows weeks of speculation as to the future of Chief Vanessa Wilson, who took over the leadership of the Aurora Police Department in 2020 as it careened through a series of high-profile controversies under its former chief. Wilson pledged to restore community trust in the department and implement reforms, even as the agency was thrust into the national spotlight following the death of Elijah McClain during a violent arrest by Aurora police. But she faced growing criticism and pressure as an increasing number of officers left the department and crime in the city spiked. “It is clear that Chief Wilson has prioritized community involvement,” City Manager Jim Twombly said in a news release announcing her firing. “However, the police chief also needs to effectively manage the … [Read more...] about Aurora fires police Chief Vanessa Wilson; chief was subject of “smear campaign,” her attorney says

Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight
I’ve thought about Jim Obergefell often since we first spoke nine years ago, after his historic marriage to his husband on an airport tarmac outside Baltimore. He’s come to mind mostly during big moments in my own life as a gay man in America. I thought of Jim and his late husband, John Arthur, when I first considered proposing to my husband, Aaron, and the promises — in sickness and in health, till death do us part — that I’d be making. I thought of Jim and John again when Aaron and I exchanged vows in San Francisco City Hall in 2018, with our families around us and the bust of Harvey Milk nearby . We chose City Hall for its beauty and ease, but could have been anywhere in the country — a right Jim and John won us by overcoming a mountain of obstacles just to reach that tarmac. Advertisement I thought of Jim again last week, around the time I was emailing our lawyers about the next set of paperwork to file in our pursuit of U.S. citizenship for Aaron, who is … [Read more...] about Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight
Depp v Heard: Actress carried a make-up kit ‘at all times’ to cover bruises, court told
Photographs of Amber Heard with red marks, bruises and swelling on her face - the result, she alleges, of her and Johnny Depp's final fight - have been shown in court. It came as Heard told jurors of the "torture" of re-living "the most intimate, embarrassing, deeply humiliating and personal things" she has ever gone through. On Monday, she concluded giving her evidence, with a third day centred on the final months of her marriage to Depp . The trial is now in its fifth week, and jurors have seen multiple photos of Heard throughout, that purport to document the abuse she said she received during their relationship. Several of the photos shown on Monday had not previously been seen by the jury and showed redness and swelling much more clearly than earlier photos. Advertisement But in cross examination, Depp's lawyer, Camille Vasquez took issue with the claims and asked why no photographs were produced of one particular moment Heard said Depp hit … [Read more...] about Depp v Heard: Actress carried a make-up kit ‘at all times’ to cover bruises, court told
‘Help us bring the communities together’
In this second and concluding part of a one-hour interview given to N. Ram at ‘Temple Trees' in Colombo, Mahinda Rajapaksa , Sri Lanka's President, responds to questions about his ambitious initiative for a trilingual Sri Lanka, the role of the English language, the contentious 18th constitutional amendment, the jailing and conviction of General Sarath Fonseka, the status and future of 11,000 hard-core LTTE cadres and supporters, and relations with India. You have taken a special interest in language policy. You have announced a Ten Year Presidential Initiative for a Trilingual Sri Lanka and before that the initiative to promote English. This seems to have been thought out over the long term. How do you see this going? Last year was the Year of English and Information Technology. With that the people started spoken English, they started learning English. So I thought the best thing was that all Sinhalese must learn Tamil now, the Tamils must learn Sinhala, and they must all … [Read more...] about ‘Help us bring the communities together’

‘Vikram’ audio launch: Suriya plays a cameo, Kamal Haasan and Pa Ranjith to collaborate
A young Lokesh Kanagaraj used to often hear stories of how Kamal Haasan would go to the terrace of his Alwarpet residence to get fresh air, and would sometimes wave at fans waiting below.
