World Steve Bannon Donald Trump China China trade war Trade War Fire and Fury Wall Street President Donald Trump’s former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon sided Wednesday with his old boss as Wall Street frowned on the White House's trade war with China. Trump has proposed imposing 25 percent tariffs on about 1,300 Chinese industrial technology, medical and transportation products, and China fired back Wednesday by announcing a 25 percent levy on U.S. imports including cars, soybeans and whiskey. The Dow Jones industrial average early Wednesday dipped more than 500 points before rebounding in the afternoon. Most Americans support DACA, but oppose border wall
Last Updated Jan 20, 2018 12:37 PM EST By Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus, Kabir Khanna and Anthony SalvantoNearly nine in 10 Americans (87 percent) favor allowing young immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally as children to remain in the U.S. – a policy known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This is a view that spans partisan lines. But Americans divide over whether the issue is worth risking a shutdown of the federal government. Democrats think it is, Republicans do not. Most Americans continue to oppose building a border wall, but seven in 10 Republicans support it. More than half of Democrats (57 percent) say it's worth shutting down the government to have young illegal immigrants brought the U.S. stay in the U.S. Most Republicans, while they support DACA, don't think it's worth risking a shutdown for. On the border wall, however, a slim majority of Republicans (51 percent) think it's worth risking a government shutdown over … [Read more...] about Most Americans support DACA, but oppose border wall
Wall Street to Trump: Lay off Amazon
Wall Street is sending President Trump a message: Don't start a trade war. And lay off Amazon, one of the most important companies in America. The president played a starring role in last year's stock market boom. Now he's getting the blame as Wall Street hits the skids.Trump's fingerprints were all over Monday's market sell-off. The Dow fell 459 points and the Nasdaq plunged almost 3%.Trump's repeated and vociferous attacks on Amazon unnerved investors because they raise the specter of regulation — without any clues about what Trump wants."Calling out Amazon without offering any type of prescription is what's concerning the market," said Erin Browne, head of asset allocation at UBS Asset Management.Amazon has lost $60 billion in market value since Axios first reported Trump is "obsessed" with the company on March 28.Since then, Trump has repeatedly suggested Amazon takes advantage of the US Postal Service and doesn't pay its fair share of tax.In fact, Amazon pays the same lower … [Read more...] about Wall Street to Trump: Lay off Amazon
Judge orders Minneapolis to fix long-disputed retaining wall
The city of Minneapolis was ordered Wednesday to fix a cracked and leaning retaining wall it’s been trying to get the homeowner to repair for five years, in a ruling that an attorney said could put the city on the hook for millions of dollars worth of similar repairs across the rolling urban landscape. More than 700 Minneapolis property owners were ordered to fix retaining walls between 2006 and 2010, said attorney Kristin Rowell, who won the recent case for homeowner Elizabeth Howell. “I suspect there will be many homeowners asking questions about their walls,” she said. “My phone’s been ringing with people asking questions already.” City Attorney Susan Segal said the implications of the court ruling may not be widespread. Similar cases in the future will likely be “archaeological explorations,” involving searches of public records going back many decades to when neighborhoods were first developed, without clear evidence of why walls … [Read more...] about Judge orders Minneapolis to fix long-disputed retaining wall
Additional Construction of Border Wall to Begin on Monday
Construction of a new section of the border wall in New Mexico was scheduled to begin on Monday, as Homeland Security is set to break ground on a bollard wall to replace 20 miles of vehicle barriers, KOB4 has reported. The new section, in the desert west of El Paso, will continue where the existing wall ends and will replace current barriers that do not meet the Border Patrol's operational needs. The fence will be between 18 and 30 feet high, and the see-through design allows agents to spot migrants or smugglers on the Mexican side attempting to jump the border, according to The Washington Times. The project has been in the works for some time, and the contract was awarded in January, meaning it was finalized before the recent political disagreement over border wall funds in the new spending bill. Some residents near the border did not agree with the need for the improvements, with one saying it is a waste of money because very few people manage to come across the border due to the … [Read more...] about Additional Construction of Border Wall to Begin on Monday
