There is no official news as far as the punishment the NFL intends to mete out to Browns QB Deshaun Watson, but the unofficial news is starting to heat up. An article by Andrew Beaton of the Wall Street Journal on Saturday claims that the NFL will seek an “indefinite suspension that would last no shorter than one year.” The indefinite portion of the reportedly sought punishment reflects the league’s desire to give themselves flexibility should any additional lawsuits against Watson be filed. Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson (Nick Cammett/Diamond Images via Getty) March of 2023 is the two-year deadline the law imposes for adding any additional suits. According to the Journal , the NFL’s case against Watson will center around five cases in which the league feels they have extensive and compelling evidence of Watson’s “disturbing pattern of behavior.” The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) will defend Watson and contest the discipline as they are legally bound to … [Read more...] about Report: NFL to Seek Indefinite One-Year Ban for Deshaun Watson

All eyes are on Saudi Arabia, which Biden will visit in mid-July after he once vowed to treat the kingdom as a "pariah" state over the 2018 murder and dismemberment of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. However, despite the recent signs of a US-Saudi rapprochement, analysts say it is improbable Riyadh will agree to diplomatic ties with Israel -- not during Biden's visit or while King Salman, 86, still reigns. The king's official policy is that there should be no peace with Israel until it withdraws from occupied territories and accepts Palestinian statehood. Biden's visit will likely focus … [Read more...] about Do signs point to an Israel-Saudi normalisation deal?
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a 10% “super tax” on large-scale industries like cement, steel and automobiles, a move he said was aimed at tackling spiralling inflation and saving the cash-strapped country from going "bankrupt." High net worth individuals will also be subject to a "poverty alleviation tax," Mr. Sharif announced after chairing a meeting of his economic team on the federal budget for the next fiscal year 2022-23. “Our first motive is to provide relief to the masses and to reduce the burden of inflation on the people and facilitate them,” Mr. Sharif said in a video message to the nation. “Our second motive is to protect the country from going bankrupt," he said, adding that it has been devastated due to the "incompetency and corruption" of the previous Imran Khan-led government. Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
A U.N. special envoy warned Thursday that Haiti’s police force needs immediate help to fight crime and violence, noting that gangs have grown so powerful they recently seized control of a local courthouse. Helen La Lime, the top U.N. official in Haiti, said insecurity is rapidly deteriorating in the country of more than 11 million people, with an average of almost seven kidnappings reported every day. In May alone, she said more than 200 killings and 198 abductions were reported. Those kidnappings included two busloads of children and three U.N. personnel and their dependents, with one local staff member killed in a crossfire between gangs, according to a U.N. Security Council report. “The pervasive and deepening sense of insecurity, exacerbated by the (Haitian National Police’s) seeming inability to address the situation and the manifest impunity with which criminal acts are being committed, is dangerously fraying the rule of law,” said La Lime, who spoke at a U.N. … [Read more...] about UN: Haiti police need immediate help amid surge in violence
