A hot quarter of regional and boutique law firm acquisitions, potential mega-firm merger talks, and the marriage of prominent U.S. and U.K. law firms has led some analysts and law firm leaders to predict more domestic and global unions in the near future.SNR Denton—formerly Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal and Denton Wilde Sapte—launched as a top-25 global firm this fall with more than 1,500 lawyers in 32 countries. Reed Smith and Thompson & Knight have also confirmed potential union talks. New Jersey Chapter 91 Tax Update: Time to Address the Mailing
What happens when the tax assessor mails a Chapter 91 request to the address maintained on the assessor’s public records, but the request is returned “unclaimed”? Is the assessor required to conduct any type of investigation to determine if the address is correct, or can the tax assessor rely solely on his or her records? Recently, the New Jersey Tax Court had an opportunity to review these issues in First Growth Plaza, LLC v. The Tax Court held that a tax assessor is not required to investigate the address of an unclaimed certified mailing. On the contrary, the Tax Court found that it is incumbent on the property owner to ensure that any change in the … [Read more...] about New Jersey Chapter 91 Tax Update: Time to Address the Mailing

MacGyver Your Software: Necessity Reveals Useful Tools You Never Knew Your PC Had
When Microsoft surveyed Office 2003 users about features they wanted to see in Office 2007, most of the requests were for features already in Office 2003. That fits the time-honored maxim of computing: We use only 10 percent of the features of the programs we have.I have noticed that many lawyers who make innovative use of technology in their practices take advantage of program features not commonly used by others. Often, this results from the lack of budget or permission to install new programs. Necessity becomes the mother of invention. But I want to push a couple of steps beyond just making better use of the standard programs you have, like office suites and Adobe Acrobat. I want to look at your standard software with new eyes, as if you are the old TV character Angus MacGyver. The recent release of Microsoft Office 2010 and other office suites makes now a great time to think about how you use these programs. (Because Microsoft Office is used in so many law offices, I’ll use it … [Read more...] about MacGyver Your Software: Necessity Reveals Useful Tools You Never Knew Your PC Had
