While there are many issues front and center for voters as they head to the polls for the primaries over the next few months, it is time for all of us to understand just what's at stake for our democracy. In Colorado, the county clerk running for Secretary of State was recently barred by a judge from overseeing the 2022 elections and is under indictment on criminal election-tampering charges . In Georgia, a candidate for governor continues to make the absurd claim that the last election was "rigged and stolen." In Michigan, a conspiracy-pushing lawyer has already earned the state Republican Party's endorsement for attorney general. All three are election deniers. They're running for top state offices that will oversee future elections by campaigning on lies and conspiracies about the 2020 election. These aren't fringe candidates, and they are far from outliers this cycle. Election deniers are running up and down the ballot this year from coast to coast, according to a … [Read more...] about Promoters of the Big Lie want to run our elections. “Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
The very last bill to be voted on in Colorado’s 2022 legislative session was designed to make sure the state never lets another child experience what Lorenzo Montoyawent through. Montoya was 14 years old in 2000 when he was taken into questioning by Denver police detectives who suspected him in the killing of a Skinner Middle School teacher named Emily Johnson. He didn’t kill her . Again and again, that’s what he told detectives. But over a period of hours, first with Montoya’s mom present and later alone with the child, the police planted a narrative in the child’s mind. They claimed they’d already retrieved fingerprints, shoe prints and hair samples to back it up. Confused and under enormous pressure, Montoya relented and gave a coerced confession. He was convicted of murder and spent the rest of his childhood and most of his 20s incarcerated, before being exonerated in 2014. It is legal in Colorado and all states but Oregon, Illinois and Utah for police to lie to … [Read more...] about “Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
*** Election Night Livewire *** Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Oregon Vote in Contentious Primaries
Voters in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, and Oregon all head to the polls Tuesday to select their nominees in both GOP and Democrat primaries in what is thus far this year perhaps the biggest election night yet. Center-stage is Pennsylvania’s GOP U.S. Senate primary, where celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz – with former President Donald Trump’s endorsement – aims to secure the nomination and advance to the general election. Both Oz and businessman David McCormick, who despite his Wall Street history has run one of the most America First campaigns this cycle, have spent north of eight figures bashing each other to smithereens in a brutal ad campaign. Kathy Barnette, the author and conservative commentator whose powerful personal story has captivated voters, has surged into the top tier in the final weeks of the campaign, giving both of the big spenders a run for their money. Who wins between Oz, McCormick, and Barnette, will have major implications for the future of the GOP, … [Read more...] about *** Election Night Livewire *** Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Kentucky, Idaho, Oregon Vote in Contentious Primaries
Ex-Bush strategist urges full vote counts in Florida and Arizona, tells officials to avoid “grave injustice” of 2000
A former George W. Bush's strategist who worked on the 2000 campaign called on Florida and Arizona officials to tally all the votes cast, urging state personnel to avoid a controversial election victory. "I worked on the Bush campaign in 2000 and was chief strategist in 2004," Matthew Dowd tweeted on Friday. "Not counting all the votes in Florida in 2000 was a grave injustice and caused many to question the legitimacy of Bush election. Let us not repeat that injustice in FL and AZ this year. Count all the votes." Close races in Florida and Arizona have yet to be called. Republican Governor Rick Scott is trying to unseat Democratic incumbent Senator Bill Nelson. Scott holds 50.1 percent of the vote according to The New York Times. A final vote count in which the victor wins by .5 percent or less triggers an automatic recount, according to NPR. Nelson sued Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner over the process used to validate mail-in ballots, saying the signature verification … [Read more...] about Ex-Bush strategist urges full vote counts in Florida and Arizona, tells officials to avoid “grave injustice” of 2000
Denver City Council votes to ban concealed carry of guns in city buildings and parks
The Denver City Council passed an ordinance Monday to ban the concealed carry of guns in city buildings and parks. The council voted 9-3 in favor of the bill , and it will head to the mayor's office over the next 48 hours for a signature or veto, a City Council spokesperson said. The ordinance was passed amid a spate of gun violence and mass shootings across the U.S . There are exemptions to the concealed carry ban, however, for law enforcement and military personnel. Also exempt are licensed security guards acting within the scope of their duties, authorized activities at Denver police and sheriff shooting ranges, and legitimate sporting activities. The ban is punishable with a civil penalty of up to $50 for a first offense and up to $999 for subsequent offenses, with no jail penalty. City Attorney Kristin Bronson said the ordinance would ensure public safety, and not infringe upon gun rights. “We believe residents and visitors of Denver have an expectation … [Read more...] about Denver City Council votes to ban concealed carry of guns in city buildings and parks
Concerns over goose poop may lead this Bay Area city to kill off hundreds of Canada geese
Activists and concerned residents in Foster City plan to protest the city’s proposal to potentially euthanize more than 300 Canada geese and goslings that some say are taking over — and contaminating — the city. The animal activists behind the protest, planned for Tuesday evening outside of City Hall, said the city’s interest in partnering with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services to control the city’s sweling goose population would be a massacre that is both “inhumane” and “temporary” at best. Between 2020 and 2021, Foster City’s goose population doubled to the largest its ever been, city officials said, with 323 reported as of last June. The overpopulation has sparked ire from residents who say the birds, and their droppings in particular, are posing a threat to health and safety. Foster City officials said they intend to reserve euthanization as a last resort. “Where there’s water, there’s water fowl,” said protester and Larkspur resident Erik Allen, who … [Read more...] about Concerns over goose poop may lead this Bay Area city to kill off hundreds of Canada geese
“Dunkin’ runs on call-outs”: Worker stressed by understaffing sparks outcry
A video from an understaffed Dunkin' Donuts has gone viral, prompting an outcry over the working conditions that have driven food service workers to leave their jobs in droves. Dunkin' employee Kaliah Hodnett recorded her distraught coworker in a TikTok video shared last week. The post has amassed 1.7 million views in five days. "When you get 3 call-outs and 2 people quit all in the same day," Hodnett captioned her video. The footage showed her coworker, whose face was manipulated by a crying filter, standing in the office of a Dunkin' restaurant. Hodnett added hashtags that said "I hate my job" and "Dunkin' runs on call-outs." The record number of Americans quitting their jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has been termed " The Great Resignation ." Quitting rates have continued to soar this year, with over 4.5 million people leaving their jobs in March. Workers in hospitality and food services quit at a rate of 6.1 percent that month, double the national average … [Read more...] about “Dunkin’ runs on call-outs”: Worker stressed by understaffing sparks outcry
The story behind Hyderabad Runners and the city’s marathon
The Hyderabad Marathon is an annual calendar event that’s eagerly looked forward to by the running community, and this weekend will witness the ninth edition. On August 24, participants will gather for a fun 5K run and on August 25 runners will compete in three formats — 10K, half marathon (21.09 kilometres) and a full marathon (42.2 kilometres). Around 27,000 runners have registered for the two-day event, reveals Murali Nannapaneni, president of Hyderabad Runners (HR): “We had to close the registrations more than a month ago due to the overwhelming response, to be able to look into the preparations.” Murali Nannapaneni It’s been a steady growth since the first edition of Hyderabad Marathon in 2011. “Back then, registrations were open until a day prior to the event. Since 2015, we decided to close registrations a few days in advance. A war that is shrinking India’s geopolitical options
What was initially assumed in New Delhi to be a quick confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, the war in Europe is now raging on with no end in sight, and with its long-term implications yet unknown. As for India, the initial phase of diplomatic rush is over and its geopolitical options are shrinking as the war drags on. Diminishing options For several weeks during late March and April, it seemed as though the Ukraine war presented a number of geopolitical options for New Delhi to choose from. The high-profile visits to New Delhi, the entreaties of these leaders for Indian support for their positions in the ongoing war, and India’s balancing act all seemed to propel the country to the centre stage of global attention. And yet, instead of enhancing New Delhi’s ability to make strategic choices in its broader region, the Ukraine war may actually limit the number of options available to New Delhi for at least three reasons: one, Russia as a key strategic partner is no longer … [Read more...] about A war that is shrinking India’s geopolitical options
Conscience and the body politic
Bureaucrats have social status and power. They also possess personal knowledge of the rules. So, as a reasonably educated Indian citizen knows, it is pointless to argue with a bureaucrat: one can only plead with him or her. The case of politicians is different. They seem to be one of “us”, as they derive their power from their popularity among ordinary men and women. Also, we learn at school that democratic politics is all about discussion and debate. So, when we grow up and attain adult citizenship, we live in the hope that our views will be heard by those who represent us. This hope — and the belief that keeps it alive — received a body blow during the >21 months of Emergency rule >, in effect from June 25, 1975 until its withdrawal on March 21, 1977. Ordinary citizens realised with shock that they had no rights whatsoever under the new system. When Indira Gandhi became supreme leader, the politicians surrounding her became small dictators. The new style of exercising … [Read more...] about Conscience and the body politic
