Michael D Higgins started his three-day trip with a day of engagements in Birmingham on Monday, before spending Tuesday in Liverpool. On Wednesday, he and wife Sabina are due to meet members of the Irish diaspora at the Liverpool Irish Association headquarters, before visiting the city’s Central Library where they will view material of Irish interest, including documents relating to those who fled from the Great Famine. They will then visit the Liverpool World Museum where they will see artefacts which reflect the city’s history as a port with significant Irish and other migratory influences. Daughter of Nelson Mandela launches Liverpool memorial project

The former South African president’s eldest daughter Dr Makaziwe, or Maki, Mandela and his granddaughter Tukwini Mandela visited Liverpool on Monday to see the site where a permanent memorial will be built. Liverpool fans warned to avoid Roma’s notorious Fedayn hooligan firm who vow to ‘hunt and hurt’ supporters ahead of Champions League clash
ROME police today warned visiting Liverpool football supporters to avoid areas of the city where they risked being stabbed or beaten up. It came as the first of thousands of British fans arrived in the Italian capital for a tinderbox European Champions League semi-final second leg against Roma on Wednesday. Liverpool fan Sean Cox remains in intensive care following the first leg in England, when the 53-year-old was set upon by a gang of so-called ‘ultra’ hooligans. Now members of the Fedayn – the notorious Rome gang allegedly responsible for assaulting Mr Cox – have pledged to ‘hunt down and hurt’ more Liverpool supporters. Rome police chief Giampietro Lionetti said: ‘There is a lot of history between the two sets of fans, and it will our job to keep them all safe. Police arrest two on suspicion of attempted murder before Liverpool-Roma game
(Reuters) – Merseyside Police have arrested two men from Rome on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was left with serious injuries following an incident ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final against AS Roma at Anfield on Tuesday. Police said in a statement that a 53-year-old man from Ireland had suffered a head injury and was in a critical condition in hospital. “We believe the victim was in Liverpool with his brother for the Liverpool v Roma semi-final and was assaulted during an altercation between Roma and Liverpool fans near to the Albert pub at about 7.35pm,” police said. “Witnesses report that the victim was hit with a belt and then fell to the ground.” Police said the men, aged 25 and 26, had been taken in for questioning.
