The city of Matera, Italy, was chosen as the European Capital of Culture 2019. Since it assumed this title it has put on a range of events to prove it truly deserves it. The European Capital of Culture is a title awarded on a yearly basis by the European Commission. The winning city is expected to put on a series of pan-European cultural events. Cities can submit proposals to an international panel. The panel assesses cities based on a criteria set by the European Union which includes if a city has potential to benefit socially and economically from the title. The programme started in 1985 - Athens was the first city to receive it. Since then a total of 40 cities have been assigned the title with 9 different countries earning it in 2000 at the turn of the millennium. This year Matera and Plovdiv, Bulgaria, share the title. Matera has celebrating its inauguration as the European Capital of Culture 2019 with a spectacular opening weekend of performance. The European Capital of Culture is a year-long event that celebrates diversity and culture in Europe and aims to help people discover the richness of the continent. In Matera the opening celebrations took place across two days between January 19 and 20. During the event, marching bands from many of the Basilicata’s municipalities gave extraordinary performances on the streets of the town, reviving old musical traditions on an impressive scale, with each band representing a European Capital of Culture. Overall more than 2,000 musicians converged on the city, enjoying lunch with local residents and spectators before finishing their journey at sunset, surrounded by candelight. The Bulgarian city of Plovdiv is officially European Capital of Culture. It is one of Europe's oldest cities, with many architectural landmarks dating back to Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman times. To celebrate the ancient heritage and it's multi cultural past and present, Plovdiv chose the motto 'Together' for this year as Europe's Capital of Culture. "A historic city with 8,000 years of continuous human habitation, with a multi-ethic past and almost six decades of totalitarian Communism is this year's Cultural Capital of Europe," said Euronews journalist Wolfgang Spindler. Acclaimed children’s author Julia Donaldson is excited about Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 and has generously agreed to be its patron. As a resident of the district for five years, the former Children’s Laureate is the perfect example of the creativity within the area and the resulting astounding success. Julia feels honoured and delighted to be patron and says the project is a great opportunity for celebration.
