‘We Built a Tiny House Village For Women and Trans People’
The first I heard of tiny home villages was back in 2019. My background is in social work and at that time, I was working with homeless youth in the public school system; high school students that were unaccompanied, in school, facing homelessness. I was there for seven years, and every year graduation rates amongst our homeless individuals were rising. I would be with them through their high school experience, and then thinking: What happens next? In Denver, we only have one homeless shelter exclusively for teens. Finding housing for youth past 18 is really difficult without a guardian, or any type of down payment. Then I Colorado Village Collaborative through a mutual friend. At the time, it was a small grassroots organization that had just 11 tiny homes in a village named the Beloved Community Village. They were looking for a village organizer, someone to come in and expand programming within the village. I was aware of the shelters and hotels that many homeless individuals … [Read more...] about ‘We Built a Tiny House Village For Women and Trans People’
Fact Check: Does video show Komodo dragon devour a whole Baby Deer?
Social media proved this week that skepticism runs deeper than politics or conspiracy theories, when an astonishing viral video of a Komodo dragon in the wild sparked disbelief. Twitter watched what appeared to be raw footage of the extraordinary animal eating a fawn or small deer from snout to tail in just a few bites. Such was the shock, that many began to question whether the beast or (perhaps more pertinently) the video was real. With doubts in mind, Newsweek sought to separate the facts from the fantasy. The Claim A video posted on Twitter , viewed nearly 13 million times, shows what appears to be a Komodo dragon eating a fawn or some species of small deer whole. Many of the responses to this video were skeptical that a Komodo dragon could eat a whole deer, noting both the time it took to eat the animal and the size of the dragon itself. The Facts The video itself does feature some warning signs that are common with doctored footage. Although clear in what it … [Read more...] about Fact Check: Does video show Komodo dragon devour a whole Baby Deer?

Macrovariable projections in uncertain times
The Fed has raised its benchmark interest rate again by a whopping 0.75%. The Reserve Bank of India has also been forced to raise interest rates further but also take other steps. These decisions in the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting are based on what the members of the MPC see as the likely course of the economy in the months ahead. But, the trajectory of the world economy, and its likely impact on the Indian economy, is imponderable. So, Indian policymakers would face two crucial problems. First, the main uncertainty is due to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the resultant economic sanctions on Russia, as well as the zero-COVID-19 policy in China that repeatedly implements lockdowns leading to global supply bottlenecks. Second, policy has to base itself on data. If it is deficient, it introduces additional uncertainty, making projections for the future difficult and causing policies to fail. This will compound the problem that results from the global uncertainty. … [Read more...] about Macrovariable projections in uncertain times
Railway pantry staff allegedly throws man out of moving train over trivial issue; one held
Railway pantry staff allegedly attacked a man and threw him out of a moving train in Lalitpur district in Jhansi, police said on August 8. One of the accused has been arrested, they said. Ravi Yadav, 26, was travelling along with his sister on Raptisagar Express (12591) on Saturday. When the train reached near Jiroli village, an argument broke out between him and the pantry staff over the purchase of a water bottle and spitting pan masala, police said. Following this, Yadav's sister got off the train at Lalitpur station, but the pantry staff did not allow him to leave. Later, they allegedly beat him up and threw him out of the moving train on to the track, from where locals rushed him to the district hospital. He was referred to Jhansi Medical College, where his condition is said to be out of danger. Based on Mr. Yadav's complaint, an FIR has been registered against the pantry staff under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (causing grievous hurt) and 506 (criminal … [Read more...] about Railway pantry staff allegedly throws man out of moving train over trivial issue; one held
U.S. Senate passes Biden’s mega health, climate bill; House to vote next
Democrats pushed their election-year economic package to Senate passage Sunday, a hard-fought compromise less ambitious than President Joe Biden’s original domestic vision but one that still meets deep-rooted party goals of slowing global warming, moderating pharmaceutical costs and taxing immense corporations. The estimated $740 billion package heads next to the House, where lawmakers are poised to deliver on Biden's priorities, a stunning turnaround of what had seemed a lost and doomed effort that suddenly roared back to political life. Democrats held united, 51-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote. “It's been a long, tough and winding road, but at last, at last we have arrived,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., ahead of final votes. “The Senate is making history. I am confident the Inflation Reduction Act will endure as one of the defining legislative measures of the 21st century.” Republican amendments shunned Senators … [Read more...] about U.S. Senate passes Biden’s mega health, climate bill; House to vote next

Much of the work for the delimitation of municipal wards in Delhi has been completed and the three-member delimitation committee is on track to submit the draft report on the exercise within the stipulated deadline (November 2022), sources familiar with the development said on Saturday. A source said the committee has already received data from the Directorate of Census Operations, while the office of Chief Electoral Officer, Delhi, has provided the latest electoral rolls. The exact number of wards to be carved out of the exercise has been fixed at 250, said the source. “The work on the delimitation exercise is moving at a faster pace as the data used are from the 2011 Census and digital maps from the previous delimitation exercise [in 2016] are already available. We only have to reduce 22 wards [from 272 to 250] and the larger focus is on Assembly segments that have more than three wards, while the average population per ward will be around 65,000,” said a source.
