An American student of Vietnamese descent was arrested in Binh Thuan, located east of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Sunday for participating in a peaceful protest against China, which turned violent after police started clashing with demonstrators. Will Nguyen, 32, a Yale graduate and Texas native, was reportedly arrested for “disrupting public order.” He is scheduled to receive a master’s degree from the University of Singapore next month.The protests were reportedly over proposed economic zones that would allow up to 99-year leases for foreign investors, which raised fears of Chinese encroachment and domination by the so-called “Middle Kingdom.” Nguyen was arrested in addition to over 100 other protesters and dozens of participants, also injured by police. Fate of Jailed American Hangs Over Pompeo’s Visit to Vietnam
The fate of an American arrested almost a month ago during a rare protest in Vietnam is likely to be raised by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after he touches down Sunday in Hanoi to meet leaders of the communist government. Houston native William Nguyen was detained June 10 during a Ho Chi Minh City protest against proposed special economic zones that Vietnamese fear will lead to Chinese encroachment and cybersecurity legislation they believe will curb online freedoms. In a police video broadcast on state television last month, Nguyen acknowledged that he violated Vietnamese law and expressed “regret” for disrupting traffic and promised not to participate in activities against the government. Vietnam, Hungary augment ties in judicial manpower training
The talks between officials of the Supreme People’s Court of Vietnam and the Hungarian Prosecution Service The delegation, led by Chief Justice Nguyen Hoa Binh, met with leaders of the Hungarian Prosecution Service, the National Office for the Judiciary and the Ministry of Human Resources. During talks with Prosecutor General of Hungary Peter Polt, Binh affirmed that the two countries have carried out several cooperation programmes in the field of prosecution. Since 2013, the Hanoi-based Procuratorate University has sent five students to study law in Hungary. Polt agreed with Binh’s proposal on creating more favourable conditions for Vietnamese students who study law in the country to practice at local prosecution agencies. Former US Ambassador to leave post at Fulbright University Vietnam
The Hanoitimes - Former US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius decided to leave his post as Vice President of Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV), according to an announcement released by the university. The FUV on June 19 announced that its Vice President Ted Osius has tendered his resignation and is stepping down from his position at the end of this year to pursue other opportunities in the educational and non-profit sectors.
