World Russia Jehovah's Witnesses Religion Persecution Wearing balaclavas and carrying machine guns, police in four Russian cities have raided the homes of Jehovah’s Witnesses over the past two weeks and brought members of the religious group in for questioning, sources connected to the group told Newsweek. In Russia, where the Orthodox Christian Church has deep ties to the highest levels of the Kremlin, the government has labeled Jehovah’s witnesses an “extremist” sect. The ruling was made exactly one year ago, in April 2017, and came into force just a few months later when Russia’s Supreme Court dismissed an appeal. The group’s administrative center in St. Petersburg, Russia was consequently dissolved, and Jehovah’s witnesses were forced to begin worshiping in secret in their homes after almost 400 local chapters shuttered. CIA Nominee Haspel Pledges Not to Restart Interrogation Program
Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump's choice to lead the CIA, promised she wouldn't resort to waterboarding and other harsh techniques that she once helped supervise, but critics said her reassurances fell short. "Having served in that tumultuous time, I can offer you my personal commitment, clearly and without reservation, that under my leadership CIA will not restart such a detention and interrogation program," Haspel planned to tell the Senate Intelligence Committee according to excerpts released in advance of the hearing that was underway on Wednesday. Haspel's opponents, including human rights groups and some former military and intelligence officials, say the Central Intelligence Agency hasn't fully disclosed her role in "enhanced interrogation" programs after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and that she still hasn't said whether those techniques were a mistake. WB Chit Fund Case: SC Asks CBI To Bring Evidence For Seeking Custodial Interrogation Of Ex-Kolkata CP
By: PTI 30 April 2019 7:10 AM GMT The Supreme Court Tuesday asked the CBI to furnish evidence for seeking custodial interrogation of former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, who was earlier heading the West Bengal Police SIT probing the Saradha chit fund scam case. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI, to satisfy it that its request for seeking custodial interrogation of Kumar was bonafide and was in the interest of justice. The bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna asked Mehta to bring evidence to satisfy it that Kumar was even remotely involved in destruction or disappearance of evidence in the chit fund case. Mehta told the court that he will file the evidence against Kumar by tomorrow after which the bench listed the matter for further hearing on Wednesday.
