Aegean Tensions Grow as Greece Fires Tracer Rounds at Turkish Helicopter

· April 11, 2018 ·

Greek forces fired tracer rounds at a Turkish helicopter near the Greek island of Ro in the Aegean Sea on Monday night, in the latest sign of mounting tensions between Athens and Ankara. The Turkish helicopter provocatively approached the island at low altitude with its lights out, although Greek authorities said it did not actually violate their airspace. Greek troops stationed on Ro fired warning shots at the chopper with tracer rounds from their rifles.Although the helicopter departed the area without injuries or damage, the Times of London described the encounter as “the most serious crisis between the two countries for 20 years.” “A night flight with the lights out is part of Turkey’s tactic of provocation from a safe distance which, however, carries the risk of an accident,” the office of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said. The Greek military took a tougher line than the Prime Minister’s office, declaring that “the order to fire the … [Read more...] about Aegean Tensions Grow as Greece Fires Tracer Rounds at Turkish Helicopter

Tsipras: Greece Rejects ‘Unacceptable Preconditions’ for Return of Soldiers Held by Turkey

· April 23, 2018 ·

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday that Greece categorically rejects “unacceptable preconditions” from Turkey for the return of two Greek soldiers arrested on the Turkish side of the border in March. Reuters supposes that Tsipras was responding to a Turkish TV interview with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday in which Erdogan “appeared to float the possibility of handing over the two Greek soldiers if Athens returned the eight Turkish commandos.”There really wasn’t anything floaty about it—Erdogan forthrightly stated that Athens can have its soldiers back if the accused coup collaborators he wants are delivered to Ankara. “They ask us to give back the Greek soldiers and we told them ‘if you make such a demand, you should first give us FETO soldiers involved in a coup against our state’ If they are handed to us, we will consider,” Erdogan said on Saturday.FETO is the Fethullah Terrorist Organization, … [Read more...] about Tsipras: Greece Rejects ‘Unacceptable Preconditions’ for Return of Soldiers Held by Turkey
