The UK’s leading offshore energy body has warned that environmental activists could undermine the country’s energy security and hinder its efforts to reach net zero. Protests, legal action and publicity stunts by organisations including Extinction Rebellion , Just Stop Oil and Greenpeace may deter investment in the North Sea and set back the UK’s efforts to cut emissions, according to Offshore Energies UK (OEUK). Addressing colleagues at the OEUK’s annual conference, held in Aberdeen , on Tuesday, chief executive Deirdre Michie said attempts by pressure groups to block further oil and gas investment in UK waters would make the country increasingly dependent on other countries for energy, which could include Russia. Activists have refuted her comments, claiming it is the country’s dependence on fossil fuels that undermines energy security, not the people highlighting the problem. George Soros says Ukraine war may be “beginning of World War 3”
Billionaire financier and philanthropist George Soros has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin 's invasion of Ukraine had put civilization in danger. Soros, 91, told his annual dinner at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday that the war had changed the world irrevocably and that "even when the fighting stops...the situation will never revert to the status quo." "Indeed, the Russian invasion may turn out to be the beginning of World War III, and our civilization may not survive it." He said that Putin's invasion "has shaken Europe to its core." Soros, who has often been a target for the U.S. far right, is the chair of Soros Fund Management LLC and funds liberal charities and nongovernmental organizations through his Open Society Foundations. He said that prioritizing the war over crises like pandemics and climate change posed its own dangers. "That's why I say our civilization may not survive," he said. Citing experts, Soros said that "we have … [Read more...] about George Soros says Ukraine war may be “beginning of World War 3”
Amid Stalled Talks Between Kyiv and Moscow, Zelenskyy Says Only ‘Diplomacy’ Can End Ukraine War
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned Saturday that only a diplomatic breakthrough rather than an outright military victory could end Russia’s war on his country, as Moscow cut gas supplies to Finland. “There are things that can only be reached at the negotiating table,” Zelenskyy said, just as Russia claimed its long-range missiles had destroyed a shipment of western arms destined for Ukraine’s troops. After just over 12 weeks of fierce fighting, Ukrainian forces have halted Russian attempts to seize Kyiv and the northern city of Kharkiv, but are under renewed and intense pressure in the eastern Donbas region. Moscow’s army has flattened and seized the southeastern port city of Mariupol and subjected Ukrainian troops and towns in the east to a remorseless ground and artillery attack. Zelenskyy’s western allies have shipped modern weaponry to his forces and imposed sweeping sanctions on the Russian economy and President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. But the Kremlin has … [Read more...] about Amid Stalled Talks Between Kyiv and Moscow, Zelenskyy Says Only ‘Diplomacy’ Can End Ukraine War
Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia has opened a long-anticipated new phase of the war in Ukraine , launching its eastern offensive in a bid to seize the country's industrial heartland. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the move Tuesday , saying the Kremlin's goal was to achieve the “full liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” which together make up the Donbas region. The full-scale assault on Ukraine's east came as the last fighters in Mariupol, the besieged port city that is crucial to Moscow's goals, continued to hold out despite a new Russian deadline to surrender. It also followed Russian strikes across the country, hitting supply lines and military infrastructure and killing at least seven people in the western city of Lviv . The United States is expected to announce another package of military aid, which is expected to be similar in size to the $800 million one the administration … [Read more...] about Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
EPA plan would force Utah, Wyoming and California to cut harmful air emissions drifting into Colorado
The Environmental Protection Agency for the first time is proposing a measure that would force four Western states to reduce their harmful emissions because of the impact they’re having on air quality in neighboring states — including Colorado. If approved, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada would be required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and industrial manufacturing sites, while California would need to cut emissions from certain industries. National modeling shows those states’ emissions are blowing across the West and into metro Denver, adding to the already bad ground-level ozone pollution. The move would help Colorado because the EPA recently announced plans to downgrade Denver and the northern Front Range to “severe” violators of federal ozone standards, which would mean more stringent emissions limits for industries and higher gas prices for motorists. The EPA unveiled earlier this month its plan to include 26 states in an update of the agency’s … [Read more...] about EPA plan would force Utah, Wyoming and California to cut harmful air emissions drifting into Colorado
EXPLAINER: How cities in the West have water amid drought
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 As drought and climate change tighten their grip on the American West, the sight of fountains, swimming pools, gardens and golf courses in cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Boise, and Albuquerque can be jarring at first glance. Western water experts, however, say they aren’t necessarily cause for concern. Over the past three decades, major Western cities — particularly in California and Nevada — have diversified their water sources, boosted local supplies through infrastructure investments and conservation, and use water more efficiently. Peter Gleick, president emeritus of the Pacific Institute, has studied water resources for decades. He calls the reduction in per capita water use a “remarkable story” and one that’s not widely acknowledged. “That’s a huge success throughout the West,” Gleick said. “All of the cities … [Read more...] about EXPLAINER: How cities in the West have water amid drought
Cost of living: Pork specialist Cranswick demands government saves industry’s bacon
Since it landed on the old Unlisted Securities Market - the precursor to Aim - 37 years ago, Cranswick has been one of those businesses that hides its light under a bushel, its management traditionally attracting epithets such as "taciturn" from City followers. That reflects its history. The business was founded in 1975 by a group of 23 farmers in East Yorkshire who clubbed together to buy a pig feed mill, over time diversifying into grain merchanting and pig wholesaling. Its services further evolved when, in 1988, it expanded into pork butchery and then, in a bid to ride out the cyclicality of the pork market, into producing gourmet sausages from prime cuts of pork. Energy price cap tipped to hit £2,800 in October - Cost of living latest It now produces sausages both under banners such as its own Simply Sausages brand for most of the main supermarket multiples, including the Tesco Finest, the Co-op Irresistible and Sainsbury's Taste The Difference ranges, as well as … [Read more...] about Cost of living: Pork specialist Cranswick demands government saves industry’s bacon
UK on brink of beer bottle shortage amid rising costs, warns wholesaler
The UK is on the brink of a bottled beer shortage as stocks of glassware plummet and production costs soar, a leading Scottish wholesaler has warned. Suppliers are already starting to deal with a glassware shortage, as prices jumped by 80% in the last 12 months due to rising energy costs. The warning comes after beer experts in Germany said the country could be facing a glasware shortage this summer, with their small and medium-sized breweries expected to bear the brunt. And it is only a matter of time before the shortage is felt within the UK’s beer industry, according to Julie Dunn, operations director at one of Scotland’s largest wholesalers, Dunns Food and Drinks. Rail union leader says blackouts a ‘realistic possibility’ in biggest strike in a generation
Blackouts, fuel shortages or empty shelves are a “realistic possibility” if ministers refuse to back down over the biggest rail strike since privatisation, a union chief said today. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch spoke to the Mirror after closing a ballot of 40,000 workers at 15 companies and Network Rail - over pay, conditions and 2,500 Network Rail maintenance job cuts. A result is expected tonight or tomorrow morning - with Mr Lynch expecting members would overwhelmingly back strike action. He said walkouts could begin as soon as mid-June and refused to rule out them lasting into next year - or escalating into a general strike. He warned Tory ministers plan to “shut virtually every ticket office in Britain”, meaning the “end of passenger assistance” as the elderly and vulnerable are directed to apps and websites. Promising a “rolling campaign” of roadshows into left-behind towns and villages he added: “This is a regular industrial dispute. It’s not one with a political … [Read more...] about Rail union leader says blackouts a ‘realistic possibility’ in biggest strike in a generation
