Vaping is done using e-cigarettes. These are battery-operated devices, known as vapes, through which users inhale nicotine in a vapour, as opposed to smoke. They heat a solution – an e-liquid – which usually contains nicotine, propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerine, and flavourings. The retail outlets, run by Ecigwizard, are based at Sandwell General Hospital, in West Bromwich, and Birmingham City Hospital, both of which are run by Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. The stores’ openings come amid a clampdown by the trust on smoking on its grounds, with people being issued £50 fines since July 5 if they light up. Security cameras are also being used to police smoking. Using e-cigarettes outside is allowed, on the condition it takes place away from doorways, while smoking shelters have been converted into vaping areas. Gov. Jared Polis has a plan to expand preschool and lower health care costs for people who buy coverage on the individual market: Create an excise tax on vaping and increase taxes on all nicotine products. Polis introduced his tax proposal Wednesday at a press conference with Rep. Yadira Caraveo, D-Thornton, whose bill that would ask voters in November 2019 whether these new sin taxes are something they want. “Colorado currently has the highest rate of teen vaping in the nation,” Polis said. “This isn’t a statistic we’re proud of. This measure would help keep tobacco products out of the hands of kids and put more resources toward schools, tobacco prevention and cessation efforts, and toward reducing health care costs.” Here’s what the bill — which has less than two weeks to pass through the legislature — proposes: Raise the tax on a pack of cigarettes from $0.84 to $2.59 — a nearly 200% increase. Jared Polis and Democratic lawmakers want to ask voters to increase Colorado’s tax on tobacco and put in place a new tax on popular nicotine vaping products.If approved in November, the tax measure could bring in an estimated $300 million a year, with funds earmarked for health and education programs.But the proposal’s backers say a key aim of the tax is to discourage smoking and vaping — particularly among young residents — which cost taxpayers millions in added health care costs.The proposal would increase the state tax on cigarettes by $1.75 per pack and raise the tax on other tobacco products to 62%. It would also apply the same 62% tax rate to e-cigarettes and other nicotine vaping products, which don’t currently face levies beyond routine sales tax. A store clerk at a vape store was fired Friday evening after he was caught on video screaming at a customer wearing a shirt that said “Trump” and a MAGA hat, demanding for him to leave and refusing to sell him anything. “LEAVE THE STORE! LEAVE THE STORE! LEAVE THE STORE! F-CK OFF! I DON’T GIVE A F-CK, GET OUT!” the employee screamed at the customer, Ian Furgeson, who posted the video on his Facebook page on Friday afternoon.The clerk can be seen taking a swing at Furgeson in the video and accusing Furgeson of being racist.
