I met my partner Cazzy at university in the U.K. I had dropped out of a programme to study abroad at the last minute and all my friends had already found accommodation for the next year of study. I was booked to begin living in this awful, dreary apartment block and a friend said she knew someone looking for a roommate. I met with Cazzy and her other two roommates at a bar and we all instantly hit it off. The next day, the decision was made that next year I would join them, rather than moving into the dreary apartment. That's exactly what happened, and over the next year, our relationship blossomed from there. We've both always had an interest in traveling, I'd been fortunate to travel on many family vacations as a kid, as well as a number of cruises. Cazzy had only traveled a couple hours outside of Northern Ireland, to Spain. Neither of us knew what we wanted to do after university and so we made the decision to take a year out and go traveling around South America. We'd both … [Read more...] about “We live in a tiny house van, but there’s a dark side”

Muslim Grooming Gang Guilty of Drugging and Gang Raping Underage Girls in ‘Shag Wagon’ Van
Seven men have been found guilty of grooming and raping underage girls aged 13 to 17, plying them with drink and drugs and abusing them at sex “parties” and in a van known as the “shag wagon”. The seven-man grooming gang was described as “predatory and cynical” by a judge as the jury announced their decision on Friday following a five-month trial at Oxford Crown Court. The men, aged between 37 and 48, denied what prosecutors described as “sexual exploitation on a massive scale” — but were found guilty of charges including multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, false imprisonment, and supplying drugs. Reporting on the gang of what the BBC described as “Oxford men” was previously restricted, and two men involved in the trial still cannot be named for legal reasons. The guilty men were named as Assad Hussain, 37, of Morrell Avenue; Moinul Islam, 41, of Wykeham Crescent; Raheem Ahmed, 40, of Starwort Path; Kamran Khan, 36, of Kersington Crescent; Kameer Iqbal, 39, of … [Read more...] about Muslim Grooming Gang Guilty of Drugging and Gang Raping Underage Girls in ‘Shag Wagon’ Van
Couple escapes as omni van catches fire in Cheyyar
A couple from Chennai managed to escape after their van caught fire near the bus terminus in Cheyyar on Saturday. The police suspect that a gas leak from the LPG cylinder in the van may have caused the accident. The police said A. Gnanasekar, 52, a mechanic from Chennai, and his wife, G. Aravalli, 48, were travelling to his native village of Cheyyatraivendran in his omni van, when he noticed that smoke was emanating from the bonnet. Immediately, the pair got out of the vehicle, which was soon engulfed in flames. The incident occurred around 8.15 p.m. Upon receiving the alert, a four-member team of firefighters, led by P. Masilamani, Station Fire Officer (SFO) In-charge, Cheyyar, reached the spot and put out the fire around 9.10 p.m. “The vehicle was completely gutted. We prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring shops and electric poles,” Mr. Masilamani said. As the incident took place near the bus terminus, there was traffic chaos for about half an hour. The police … [Read more...] about Couple escapes as omni van catches fire in Cheyyar
Doorbell camera captures moment delivery van rolls down road crashing into bins
A delivery driver was caught on camera chasing his own van as it rolled down the road and crashed through his customer's bins - after seemingly forgetting to put his handbrake on. Ian Moore was at work on Monday 25 July when his phone got a notification from his doorbell camera that a delivery driver had turned up on his doorstep with a parcel. The 47-year-old then watched in shock as the delivery driver went sprinting back down the drive after his van - only after the sound of it crashing into the family's wheelie bins alerted him that it was rolling away. The delivery driver was caught on camera chasing his own van ( Image: Kennedy News and Media) The footage shows him leaping into the van and appearing to pull the handbrake on to bring the vehicle to a stop after it had bowled through the two wheelie bins on the pavement. Ian, who is a delivery service manager himself, has since shared the "comical" footage of the incident with his work colleagues in a safety … [Read more...] about Doorbell camera captures moment delivery van rolls down road crashing into bins
Europe starts unique soccer season split by Qatar World Cup
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 GENEVA (AP) — In the 134 years since league soccer started in England, the European game has never scheduled such a disrupted season. FIFA's decision to move the World Cup in Qatar from the normal offseason months to November and December in order to avoid the desert heat will slice into the European domestic season in a way not seen outside of international traumas like war or pandemic. As a result, the unusual 2022-23 European season has had to start early, will cram in more midweek games and end with the Champions League final on June 10 -- the latest planned date since the inaugural European Cup final was on June 13, 1956. It will also force the domestic leagues to have lengthy midseason breaks, from six weeks in the English Premier League to a 10-week shutdown in Germany's Bundesliga and three months in Austria, where the World Cup extends the country's usual winter … [Read more...] about Europe starts unique soccer season split by Qatar World Cup
‘Pattern change’: Great white shark populations grow as Monterey Bay waters warm
The era of extreme climate change is upon us. And in spite of the ecological horrors to come, white sharks are in their element, as population numbers on California's Central Coast continue to climb with rising water temps. A study on the migratory patterns of white sharks, two decades in the making, was recently released by the Monterey Bay Aquarium . It tracks the movement of the juvenile population of the apex predator and concludes that the great white shark is not only surviving off the coast, but it’s also — in the time of an ever-warming planet — thriving. “These complete metadata sets can provide a vast amount of useful information to fisheries managers and other scientists,” wrote John O’Sullivan, the aquarium’s director of collections and lead author of the study. The study tracked the patterns, including depth and geolocation, of 63 juvenile white sharks. O’Sullivan noted the potential now exists for the scientific community to tag and study other aquatic species. … [Read more...] about ‘Pattern change’: Great white shark populations grow as Monterey Bay waters warm
Republican Oklahoma lawmakers seek hearing in death row case
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — More than 60 Oklahoma lawmakers, including many Republicans who support the death penalty, urged the state attorney general to join their request for a new evidentiary hearing in the case of death row inmate Richard Glossip. The group of 61 state legislators sent a letter last week to Attorney General John O’Connor that pointed to an independent investigation by a Texas law firm that raised questions about Glossip’s guilt. Details of the report came out a couple of weeks before the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals set a Sept. 22 execution date for Glossip. “The report concluded that no reasonable juror who heard all the evidence would find Mr. Glossip guilty," the letter stated. “As elected officials representing the citizens of this great state, we believe it is vitally important to conduct a serious review of this case so that the truth might be conclusively found." The report by the Houston law firm Reed Smith did not find any definitive proof of … [Read more...] about Republican Oklahoma lawmakers seek hearing in death row case

A young couple has gone viral after sharing a video of their campervan renovation, turning a standard van into a home from scratch, and without any professional help. In a video shared on TikTok last Tuesday, the couple, known as Coconuts and Camels, explained that in April 2021, they bought a 17-seater Ford Transit Minibus , and after stripping it out and cleaning it up, they started turning it into their "home on wheels." The couple took care of every little detail, "from insulation and soundproofing to wiring in lights and building out living space, adding walls and a ceiling, a Maxxair ceiling fan, storage cupboards, seating and our bed to go at the back, and our kitchen of course! "Plus we designed, built and installed our power setup which made switching on the lights for the first time feel so amazing! So come say hello to our home on wheels... Stan the Van!" In further comments, the couple explained that electricity is supplied by "two 400 amp hour lithium leisure … [Read more...] about Couple go viral as they transform their “home on wheels” together

Pac-12 training camp preview: Our look at the QBs, DCs, edge rushers and search for breakout stars
Training camp begins this week across the conference and, admittedly, the development would have prompted mild interest around Hotline HQ in past years. We learned our lesson in 2021. The Pac-12’s abysmal early-season showing, which included losses to Montana, Nevada, Northern Arizona, Utah State, BYU, San Diego State and Fresno State, underscored the significance of training camp as a tool for evaluation and positioning teams to win immediately. Sure, there was a COVID hangover last season resulting from limited practices and games during the prior 12 months. Stamina and physicality clearly were not up to standard when September ’21 arrived. But COVID wasn’t the sole reason the conference underperformed a year ago. We saw numerous instances of head coaches picking the wrong quarterback: Oregon State, Stanford, Utah, Arizona and Washington State all started the season with their best option on the bench. The situation this month is vulnerable to additional whiffs in … [Read more...] about Pac-12 training camp preview: Our look at the QBs, DCs, edge rushers and search for breakout stars
