By Mollie Reilly Supreme Court Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy will step down from the bench on July 31, he announced Wednesday. “It has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court,” he said in a statement, which noted that he chose to step aside to spend more time with his family. Kennedy, 81, has sat on the high court since 1988. The Ronald Reagan appointee is known for his frequent role as a swing vote on 5-4 decisions. In this Supreme Court term, Kennedy sided with the court’s conservative bloc in every one of the court’s 5-4 decisions. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said on Sunday she would not support a replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy who opposes the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortions rights nationwide. “I would not support a nominee who demonstrated a hostility to Roe v. Wade,” Collins said during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.” She reiterated that view during on ABC’s “This Week,” describing Roe v. Former Supreme Court Judge Justice S. Ratnavel Pandian passed away on Wednesday at Chennai. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court of India from 14th December, 1988 to 12th March 1994. In 2006 he was appointed as the Chairperson of National Commission for Backward Classes. His son Justice R. Subbiah is a sitting Judge of Madras High Court. As per the Supreme Court of India website,he was born on 13.2.1929 at Thiruppudaimarudhur Village in Tiruneleli School career at Theerthapathi High School, Ambasamudram, He was graduated from Saint Xavier’s College at Palayamkottai. He took Law Degree at Madras Law College in1954. He took his apprenticeship course under Shri K. Narayanswamy Mudaliar who subsequently became the Judge of the High Court of Madras. He was an Advocate for nearly 17 years having lucrative practice both in the trial and the appellate sides.
