· July 23, 2018 ·

Sarah Polus, The Washington Post Published 11:57 am PDT, Monday, July 23, 2018 WASHINGTON - For a few glamorous hours on Sunday night, the crowd outside Washington's National Air and Space Museum managed to forget about the relentless political news cycle and the relentless summer heat when the cast of "Mission Impossible: Fallout" arrived on the Mall in all its Hollywood glory. The red carpet was flooded with A-listers for the U.S. premiere of the summer blockbuster. Angela Bassett strutted, Michelle Monaghan twirled and Henry Cavill grabbed phones to snap selfies. Britain’s ‘angriest town’ that kicked out McDonalds is fighting new ‘chain predator’ as locals try to keep out Premier Inn

· February 8, 2019 ·

BRITAIN'S "angriest town" that kicked out McDonald's is taking on another chain threatening to make a move on it - a Premier Inn. Locals in Tavistock, Devon, are up in arms over plans for a large hotel in the middle of the town sat on the edge of picturesque Dartmoor. They plan to fight a new chain store "predator", after successfully preventing McDonald's from moving in ten years ago. The fast-food giant was forced to shut when it was shunned by locals keen to keep corporations out of their home. West Devon Borough Council has sparked fighting spirit once more after saying it wants to get a yearly rent from the major hotelier. A campaign has been whipped up in the hope it'll force a re-think before a meeting on Tuesday - with a mock graffiti illustration displaying the words "No Chain Hotel in Tavi" circulating on social media. Critics argue it will drive local B&Bs out of business and negatively affect independent traders. The little girl with the Shirley Temple curls clung to her father, too frightened to cry.She and her parents were aboard the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which began listing badly and taking on water shortly after scraping along a rocky reef off Italy’s Tuscan coast and gouging a bus-size hole in the port side just below the water line.A year and half later, the silent child still makes a lasting impression on Georgia and Dean Ananias, a Downey, Calif., couple aboard the ship when it capsized on the night of Jan. 13, 2012. They were traveling with their adult daughters, Valerie and Cindy. After trying to escape the ship for nearly five hours, the Ananiases believed they had only minutes left to live. They said their goodbyes and steeled themselves for the inevitable. “We knew we were going to die,” says Georgia. The Ananias family describes being indelibly scarred by the thought of impending death and the screams of horror all around them.
