Sign up for it here. “T hink of this as a travel piece,” she might have written. “Imagine it in Sunset magazine: ‘Five Great California Stops Along the Joan Didion Trail.’ ” Or think of this as what it really is: a road trip of magical thinking. I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

May 18, 2022 by www.news18.com

WORLD AIDS VACCINE DAY 2022: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS caused by the human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) is a deadly disease that claims about a million lives every year. At present, there are no vaccines to prevent AIDS. On May 18 each year, World AIDS Vaccine Day is celebrated to highlight the urgent need for HIV-AIDS vaccines. For now, there are certain precautions that people can take to avoid catching the deadly disease. Practice Safe Sex As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HIV can spread through anal and vaginal intercourse if partners do not use condoms. The latex sheaths are thus an absolute necessity. Oral intercourse, on the other hand, has a much lower risk of spreading HIV but is still not risk-free. The virus is spread through bodily fluids like seminal fluid, vaginal fluid and blood, but not saliva. HIV screening of couples and mothers The virus can not only spread among couples but also between mother and child … [Read more...] about World AIDS Vaccine Day 2022: Here’s How You Can Prevent an HIV Infection

Pac-12 scraps football divisions moments after NCAA paves way

May 18, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

The Pac-12 announced Wednesday it was scrapping its divisional format for the upcoming football season moments after the NCAA Division I Council tossed out requirements that dictate how conferences can determine a champion. The Pac-12 will now pair the teams with the highest conference winning percentages in its title game after 11 seasons of matching winners of the North and South divisions. Other conferences are expected to follow, most notably the 14-team Atlantic Coast Conference. The ACC is looking to implement a new scheduling model as soon as 2023. To have a conference title game, NCAA rules previously required leagues to split into divisions if they could not play a full round-robin schedule. The 10-member Big 12 wound up deciding to resume its title game even without divisions in part to raise the profile of the winner for playoff consideration. That was clearly on the minds of Pac-12 executives, too. “Our goal is to place our two best teams in our Pac-12 football … [Read more...] about Pac-12 scraps football divisions moments after NCAA paves way

Will Johnny Depp or Amber Heard win? Marble race aims to predict outcome

May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Though the Johnny Depp -Amber Heard trial has much of the world on the edge of their seats awaiting the outcome, one TikTokker came up with a novel way to predict the results. The TikTok account @WeRaceMarbles is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin: they race marbles . Of course, they're not just racing them for fun, but to determine different things—for example, they've got races revealing the best Hogwarts House, whether Mario or Luigi is better and which is the best video game console. But the account's latest video is the first of three planned races to determine whether Depp or Heard will be the victor in their court case. Depp is represented by two black marbles, Heard is represented by two white marbles, and the team that wins twice is the official winner. An on-screen caption boasts a 95 percent accuracy rate, but that's most likely a joke, as it's followed by a silly smile emoji. Though there are a number of switch-ups in the race as marbles careen off … [Read more...] about Will Johnny Depp or Amber Heard win? Marble race aims to predict outcome

Nolte: Netflix Kills a Slew of Woketard Programming

May 18, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Netflix just announced the death of a slew of woketard shows, including an obvious abomination called Antiracist Baby . From far-left Variety : Netflix has pulled the plug on several animated projects, including “Wings of Fire,” from executive producer Ava DuVernay; “Antiracist Baby,” a series aimed at preschoolers; and “With Kind Regards From Kindergarten,” a film tailored to youngsters. The streaming service also scrapped “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism and You,” a documentary intended to serve as a companion piece to “Stamped From the Beginning, which is a hybrid documentary and scripted feature that delves into race in the United States. “Stamped From the Beginning” is still moving forward and is currently in post-production. And then Netflix adds this insult to injury… Sources at Netflix stress the decisions not to move forward with these projects were creative rather than cost related, meaning they would have taken place regardless of the company’s slower … [Read more...] about Nolte: Netflix Kills a Slew of Woketard Programming

ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific

May 19, 2022 by www.thejakartapost.com

Endy Bayuni (The Jakarta Post) Jakarta   ● Thu, May 19, 2022 2022-05-19 02:17 0 02c2f042c5018a82e8094ec75262fb2f 1 Academia ASEAN,Joe-Biden,US,Kamala-Harris,summit,China,Indo-Pacific,outlook,strategy,South-China-Sea,Quad,investment Free The United States and ASEAN may have many things in common when it comes to the future of the Indo-Pacific, even on security issues, but they differ on how to deal with China. While Washington is trying to build alliances in the region to contain the rise of China, ASEAN has accepted China’s growing power and tries to include, rather than exclude, Beijing in the emerging regional architecture. There is one problem, though. China has not fully subscribed to the geographical definition of the Indo-Pacific region, suspecting that this framework is tailored to suit the US agenda. Besides, China does not have direct access to the Indian Ocean. But then, neither does the US for that matter, but this has not stopped it from … [Read more...] about ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific

Biden gives Republicans win on “Ministry of Truth”

May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The work of President Joe Biden 's Disinformation Governance Board has been put on pause by the Department of Homeland Security , in a move that Republicans are likely to hail as a win for the GOP. The board, which conservative critics have dubbed the "Ministry of Truth" in reference to George Orwell's 1984 , was dissolved on Monday, according to The Washington Post. Unlike the "Ministry of Truth," however, the board did not have the power to declare what would be true or false, nor did it have the ability to ask other parties to take action against certain types of speech. Nonetheless, the announcement of the disinformation board was met with immense GOP backlash . Although the DHS said its goal was to "coordinate countering misinformation related to homeland security," Republicans accused the Biden administration of being the arbiters of truth. Nina Jankowicz, who was tapped to head the board , resigned on Wednesday morning despite reportedly being offered the … [Read more...] about Biden gives Republicans win on “Ministry of Truth”

Clips of Camille Vasquez giving Amber Heard “dirty looks” go viral

May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Footage of Johnny Depp 's lawyer Camille Vasquez has gone viral after the attorney seemingly gave Amber Heard "dirty looks" in court during the multi-million dollar defamation trial in Fairfax, Virginia. The lawyer has become something of an overnight star thanks to her performance in the courtroom , with Depp fans praising her on social media . The trial is now in its fifth week and Heard's cross-examination came to an end on Tuesday (May 17). Depp, 58, is suing Heard for $50 million, while Heard, 36, is counter-suing her former partner for $100 million. The lawsuit stems from a 2018 op-ed Heard wrote for The Washington Post in which she said she was a domestic abuse survivor. The piece never mentioned Depp by name but his legal team argue the insinuation resulted in reputational damage and extensive financial losses. Both parties have alleged that the other was violent towards them throughout their marriage, which ended in 2016. A TikTok user shared footage of … [Read more...] about Clips of Camille Vasquez giving Amber Heard “dirty looks” go viral
