When your teenager is pining for her first car, forget what you've heard about the "safest" vehicles. Instead buy a car with some size and weight to it. The old faithful aging in grandma's garage may be a better bargain in terms of keeping young drivers safe than newer and cuter models, according to a new report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Notably, IIHS, which evaluates auto safety, is doing a sharp left turn from some of its earlier research. As recently as July it rated the Kia Forte as one of the safest small cars on the road. But when it comes to the all-important first set of wheels for your novice teen driver, the organization used a different yardstick, assuming that parents and youngsters on a limited budget prefer to spend less than $20,000 for a vehicle. This made the choice fairly simple. "Bigger vehicles provide greater protection," said Vice President Jessica Cicchino, who's in charge of research for IIHS. "If you're riding in one of the … [Read more...] about Want a safe car for your teen? Here’s what to look for

Eric D. Lawrence Detroit Free Press Published 11:13 p.m. UTC Jun 27, 2018 Could a used car be in your future? It may be a possibility for some car shoppers as they get squeezed by economic factors in coming months, according to a midyear review of the auto industry Wednesday in Detroit by Cox Automotive. Although the economy remains strong, with low unemployment, a healthy stock market and solid consumer confidence, finding a new vehicle that fits a need for affordability could be tough, the analysts said. Charlie Chesbrough, Cox Automotive senior economist, cited several issues that could push consumers to embrace used cars. For instance, a flood of off-lease vehicles is expected to peak next year at about 4.1 million from 2.2 million in 2014, and automakers are no longer targeting the under-$20,000 vehicle segment, meaning new vehicles have been getting pricier. Wages are going up but not enough to offset other factors, such as the increase in gas prices. … [Read more...] about In the market for a used car? Tariff talks might benefit you
Parents and grandparents looking for a car for the recent graduate in the family want something safe, reliable -- and, of course, affordable. If you're in that situation or if you just need a second car at a decent price, a new study pinpoints some good buys under $20,000. Research site iSeeCars.com found these attractive choices by scanning for 2015 models that depreciated more than the average 35 percent for three-year-old vehicles. That resulted in some three-year-old used cars that you could buy for half their price when new. When it comes to depreciation, different segments have different forces at work. For example, luxury cars average a 43 percent loss of value after three years, partly because so many of them are leased. And that means lower demand in the used-car market. On the other hand, pickup trucks hold their value best, depreciating an average of just 23 percent after three years. "People tend to use their pickup trucks for work and hold onto them, which limits the … [Read more...] about 5 safe, reliable used cars for under $20,000

Developing 'Affluenza Mom' Tonya Couch Arrested, Accused of Drug Use A fellow officer documented the experience on Facebook Live. Lane said his vision was wobbly and he had a headache by the end of it. "I'm seeing colors," he said on the video. "I feel like I'm about to black out."
