From Notes to Letters, This Librarian in California Collects All Things People Leave in Books
A librarian is presenting glimpses of the stories hidden in books– not the stories told by the words in them but stories emerging through the items readers leave between their pages. She has created a veritable online collection by digitizing these artifacts. The initiative invites us to imagine the lives of these anonymous individuals. A book can tell many stories. In Oakland, California, librarian Sharon McKellar is collecting and sorting all the notes, lists, doodles, photos, letters and other forgotten items tucked away in the pages of books returned to the public library. She then digitizes all of these artifacts and posts them online on the OPL website (Oakland Public Library). “I had always collected little things I’d found in library books and I knew other people did that too. So that was how it started. It was pretty simple, I was inspired by a magazine called Found Magazine,” Sharon McKellar told National Public Radio (NPR) on August 2, 2022. Since the 2000s, this … [Read more...] about From Notes to Letters, This Librarian in California Collects All Things People Leave in Books

Women at India’s Only-certified Tricolour-making Unit Flag Drop in Sales after Govt Changes Rules
For the women at the khadi units in Karnataka’s Bengeri, weaving the national flag is not a task but an emotion. Every weave, every flag is painstakingly made with love and pride. From the tiny tricolour that flutters on government vehicles, the ones atop our government buildings, schools and embassies across the world, to the flag that embraces our brave slain soldiers, each of them is made in this quaint little north Karnataka town. The Karnataka Khadi and Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (Federation), or KKGSS, located in Bengeri village in Hubbali, is the only authorised unit with BIS certification in India to manufacture and supply the tricolour across the world. The controversy One would think that the Indian government’s initiative of Har Ghar Tiranga (tricolour in every home) as part of the 75th Independence Day celebrations would have brought a cheer to the women of Bengeri who have been manufacturing khadi flags since 1957. But the reality is that they are quite … [Read more...] about Women at India’s Only-certified Tricolour-making Unit Flag Drop in Sales after Govt Changes Rules

Chhattisgarh BJP MLA Suggests Use of Bhang, Cannabis as Alternative to Liquor to Prevent Crimes
A Chhattisgarh BJP MLA has suggested that use of bhang and cannabis be encouraged as alternatives to liquor, claiming people addicted to these substances hardly commit crimes like rape, murder and dacoity. The statement made by legislator Dr Krishnamurti Bandhi on Saturday triggered a row with the ruling Congress questioning how a public representative can promote addiction. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said if the MLA wants ganja to be legalised in the country, then he should put forth the demand before the BJP-led central government. The sale and consumption of cannabis is banned under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, while that of bhang, an edible mixture made using leaves of the cannabis plant, is permitted under law, according to official. To a query about the Congress’s poll promise of liquor ban in Chhattisgarh, Bandhi while talking to reporters in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district said, “We have earlier raised the issue in the state … [Read more...] about Chhattisgarh BJP MLA Suggests Use of Bhang, Cannabis as Alternative to Liquor to Prevent Crimes
Afghanistan: Suicide Bomber Reportedly Uses Prosthetic Leg to Kill Taliban Cleric
Taliban jihadists confirmed the death on Thursday of Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani, a Taliban cleric known for confronting the terrorist organization on its anti-women’s education stance, at the hands of a suicide bomber reportedly packing explosives in his prosthetic leg. Haqqani – who is reportedly not a member of the Haqqani Network, the al-Qaeda liaison that has taken up multiple senior cabinet positions in the Taliban “government” – had prominently supported the jihadists for years and, as a result, attracted violent assaults by anti-Taliban jihadists. Haqqani had argued in the past that women should be allowed to receive an education on the grounds that the alternative would lead to haram behavior such as male doctors seeing the bodies of female patients. He had also, however, developed a loyal following by promoting the radical interpretation of Islamic sharia that the Taliban is currently enforcing in Afghanistan after falsely promising to create an “ inclusive ” state. … [Read more...] about Afghanistan: Suicide Bomber Reportedly Uses Prosthetic Leg to Kill Taliban Cleric
