“No one in my family has pursued science. Earlier, my father was apprehensive but now when we have made a satellite, he too wants me to pursue my future studies in space and technology,” said Manya Saluja, a Class 10 student of Modern Public School, Delhi who was part of a team of school girls who were mentored by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop and built a satellite. A total of 750 girl students from across India were selected to build ‘AzadiSAT’, a satellite which marked India’s 75th year of Independence. As part of the programme ISRO aims to push girls to take up Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Even though the satellite was not a success, ISRO has been successful in planting dreams in eyes of young girls from rural India who now are aiming at working in STEM, especially space and technology. UP Man Wins 22-year-long Legal Suit Against Railways Over Rs 20
A man from UP, Tungnath Chaturvedi, has won a 22-year-long legal case that he fought against Indian railways. The suit filed was related to an overpriced ticket that Chaturvedi bought back in the year 1999. Tungnath, who is also a lawyer by profession, reveals that the incident occurred at the Mathura cantonment railway station when he was travelling from Mathura to Moradabad. Unfortunately, a clerk at the ticket-booking centre overcharged him Rs 20 ($0.25; £0.21) for the two tickets that he bought at the time. According to BBC, the cost of each ticket was Rs 35 and when the Indian man gave the clerk a note of Rs 100, he only got Rs 10 in return. The cost of two tickets was Rs 70 but he was charged Rs 90 instead. When Chaturvedi informed the clerk that he had been overcharged, his request was reportedly dismissed and no refund was allotted to him. Upon his return, the lawyer decided to file an official complaint against the authorities in a consumer court in Mathura. After attending … [Read more...] about UP Man Wins 22-year-long Legal Suit Against Railways Over Rs 20
Airlines need not seek extra information from passengers: CBIC
Airlines don’t have to send mails to passengers, nor collect additional information, in order to comply with the new regulations that require them to provide details of international air travellers to the Customs department, the government clarified on Wednesday. “Passengers are not required to individually submit any information to Customs, neither do they need to furnish any additional information to the airlines on account of these regulations,” said the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in a press statement after some airlines started sending mails to passengers to collect the information sought. The CBIC said that all the information required is already being collected by airlines under the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation. The Passenger Name Record Information Regulations, 2022 notified by the CBIC on August 8 require airlines to mandatorily provide details of passengers booked on international flights to and from India, including passenger … [Read more...] about Airlines need not seek extra information from passengers: CBIC
Salman Rushdie on Ventilator and Could Lose Eye After Knife Attack
FAIRVIEW, New Jersey—British-Indian author Salman Rushdie is on a ventilator and unable to speak after a brutal on-stage stabbing attack at a western New York literary event, his agent said late Friday. “The news is not good,” Andrew Wylie wrote in an emailed update. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.” The grim prognosis came shortly after a 24-year-old New Jersey man was arrested for the brazen attack. New York State Police have identified Hadi Mater of Fairview, New Jersey, as the suspected assailant in the attack that occurred as Rushdie was about to address the Chautauqua Institution , a nonprofit education center and summer resort near Buffalo, for a talk on the U.S. being an “asylum for writers and other artists in exile.” Rushdie, who was stabbed at least twice—once in the abdomen, once in the neck—was taken by helicopter to a hospital . Police said Matar had a pass to be on the grounds of … [Read more...] about Salman Rushdie on Ventilator and Could Lose Eye After Knife Attack
Caught Between East And West, Rushdie Keeps On
To be sure, it isn't the first time Salman Srushie's work has been suppressed. It's just the dumbest. So for the record, here are the lineds that Turner Broadcasting, apparently fearing deadly Islamic reprisals, demanded be expunged from the American edition of "The Courter," a splendid story in Rushdie's new collection, East, West (214 pages, Pantheon. $21) Flintsontes! Meet the Flintstones! They're the modern stone age family. And they nixed this too: They're a page right out of his-to-ry. Sipping tea in a London office borrowed for an interview, Rushdie concedes that maybe this isn't "a censorship issue, but is sure as hell is chickensh--. If I quoted these lines, somebody would shoot Fred Flintstone?" Come Valentine's Day, it will be six years since Khomeini called for Rushdie's death. In the interim, Islamic terrorists have murdered his Japanese translator, stabbed his Italian one, shot his Norwegian publisher. Since Rushdie's very presence, or the presence of his … [Read more...] about Caught Between East And West, Rushdie Keeps On
