In an unusually blunt speech to a Middle East conference in Poland, Mr Pence called on European nations to join the US in withdrawing from the landmark 2015 Iranian nuclear deal. He criticised the three countries and the European Union as a whole for remaining parties to the agreement after the Trump administration withdrew from it last year and reimposed tough sanctions on Iran. The criticism threatened to further chill US-European ties which have already been badly strained, including over the Iran focus of the Warsaw conference co-hosted by the US and Poland. The new European Union proposal to impose sanctions is part of the bloc’s escalating response to alleged malicious Russian activity in Europe. Sanctions against states behind cyberattacks on European nations are supported to some degree by all members except Italy, according to a confidential EU document seen by Reuters this week. Britain, France, Estonia, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have called for the introduction of sanctions, the document reportedly says. Other states including Finland and Sweden support a “gradual response” to any future attacks, which could mean taking other measures before resorting to sanctions. “Responding to large-scale cyberattacks from foreign actors, in particular when they are aimed at our elections, is vital,” EU Security Commissioner Julian King told Reuters. EU diplomats said the plan was also aimed at preventing cyberattacks from other states including China and North Korea. … [Read more...] about Why is Italy resisting EU sanctions against Russia over cyberattacks?
