Struggling with the cost of living? The Tories think it’s all your own fault
Scarcely a day seems to go by without some Tory MP making a fool of themselves by wading in and trying to be helpful to people struggling with the cost of living crisis. It’s getting to be like Wordle, a regular little tweet – you know it’s coming, even though you can’t say exactly what it will be – in this case, which particular backbencher or member of the government will come up with some outstandingly patronising piece of “advice”. Unlike Wordle, however, what the Tories say is an insult to intelligence. The latest one is somebody called Rachel Maclean, who is a junior minister in charge of safeguarding and partly responsible for that great public policy success – the Afghan refugee resettlement scheme. Her top tip for folks in poverty is to go out and get a better job , and if you can’t do that then beg your employer to let you work longer hours. In her words: “We have often heard in the past when people are facing problems with their budgets that one of the … [Read more...] about Struggling with the cost of living? Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Israel advanced plans for the construction of more than 4,000 settler homes in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, a rights group said, a day after the military demolished homes in an area where hundreds of Palestinians face the threat of expulsion. It was a jolting illustration of Israel's policies in the territory it has occupied for nearly 55 years. Critics, including three major human rights groups, say those policies amount to apartheid, a charge Israel rejects as an attack on its very legitimacy. Hagit Ofran, an expert on the settlements at the anti-settlement watchdog group Peace Now, said a military planning body approved 4,427 housing units at a meeting on Thursday that she attended. Israeli officials did not respond to requests for comment. It's the biggest advancement of settlement projects since the Biden administration took office. The White House opposes settlement construction and views it as an obstacle to any eventual peace agreement with the … [Read more...] about Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups. YouTube's recommendation algorithm, they say, … [Read more...] about Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions

Kim Kardashian’s trainer responds to criticism about her 16-pound weight loss to fit in Met Gala gown
Kim Kardashian ’s trainer, Don-A-Matrix, has addressed some of the backlash that the reality star received after claiming she lost 16 pounds to fit into her Met Gala gown. On Monday evening, Kardashian arrived at the Met Gala in a beige floor-length gown previously worn by Marilyn Monore in 1962 when she sang to President John F Kennedy on his 45th birthday. While speaking to Vogue on the red carpet, she claimed that she lost 16 pounds in three weeks, and didn’t eat any “carbs or sugar,” in order to fit into the 60-year-old gown. Since the event, the 41-year-old model has faced criticism over her comments, with many condemning the Skims founder for the restrictive diet, which also saw her wear a sauna suit. Lili Reinhart was among those criticising Kardashian, with the Riverdale star expressing her disapproval on Instagram, where she called the reality star’s diet “so wrong” and “so f**ked on 100s of levels”. Kardashian’s trainer, Don-A-Matrix, who worked … [Read more...] about Kim Kardashian’s trainer responds to criticism about her 16-pound weight loss to fit in Met Gala gown
Russian sneak attack on Sumy area fails, Putin forces lose Ukrainian ground
An attempt by Russian forces to conduct a sneak attack and cross into Ukraine's Sumy region on Monday failed, according to the head of the Sumy Regional State Administration. Dmytro Zhyvytskyi said Monday in a Telegram post that the attempt took place at about 7 a.m. local time. "The enemy opened fire on the border area of Shostka district with mortars, grenade launchers, machine guns and submachine guns," the translated post read. "Enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups tried to enter the region under cover of fire. Border guards gave battle to the Russians, the same retreat beyond the state border." The reported failure to cross into Sumy is the latest indication of Russian losses and Ukrainian successes in the ongoing war, although they have not been addressed by Russian officials. Several reports issued last week by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S. think tank that provides frequent updates on the war, said Russian President Vladimir Putin 's troops … [Read more...] about Russian sneak attack on Sumy area fails, Putin forces lose Ukrainian ground
Buffalo shooter saw New York’s gun laws as his advantage
The suspected Buffalo shooter reportedly saw New York's strict gun laws as an advantage in the recent attack that left 10 people dead. According to the Buffalo News, law enforcement officials said that they believe an online manifesto was written by the suspected shooter, identified as 18-year-old Payton Gendron. In the manifesto , Gendron allegedly wrote about how he planned to "kill as many Blacks as possible" in the attack and decided to carry it out in New York due to its strict open carry gun laws, which would make it harder for someone to stop him, the Buffalo News reported. The Giffords Law Center states that New York State residents are prohibited from openly carrying a loaded handgun outside of their homes without a carry license. "The state also prohibits any person from possessing a 'loaded' short-barreled shotgun or rifle or an assault weapon outside of his or her home or place of business," the Giffords Law Center said. "New York does not issue licenses to carry … [Read more...] about Buffalo shooter saw New York’s gun laws as his advantage
Bottle containing hopeful messages from teenage girls asking for boyfriends found after 56 years
A bottle containing hopeful messages from two teenage girls asking for boyfriends has washed up after drifting in a U.K. river for 56 years. The corked glass bottle was discovered by a group of volunteer litter pickers who were cleaning up the Humber Estuary in Lincolnshire. Inside were two scribbled notes written by 15-year-old pals Jennifer Coleman and Janet Blankley dated August 9, 1966. The love-lorn pair wrote descriptions of themselves and invited teenage boys who found the bottle to write back to them. Janet wrote: "I am 15, not bad looking, long wavy brown, chestnut hair and 5'4. "Anyone interested, a photo will be exchanged in person. Boy who writes. No one under 16 or over 18." Jennifer's note said: "Anyone who finds this please contact J Coleman. "Please write if you are a boy under 18 over 16. Please send a photo and one will be exchanged. Thank you." The girls both included their addresses in Grantham, Lincs. It is thought the girls were on a day trip to … [Read more...] about Bottle containing hopeful messages from teenage girls asking for boyfriends found after 56 years
