It’s hard to feel bad for someone like Congressman Madison Cawthorn, but the Republican Congressman is right to describe the recent release of a nude video starring him as “blackmail.” In the clip, the North Carolina Republican House member is naked in bed and making thrusting motions on top of another man. Given it comes mere weeks after Politico published photos of Cawthorn posing in lingerie while drinking from a wine glass at a party, it’s easy to guess what each release seeks to intimate about the 26-year-old Congressman. Cawthorn’s response to that particular incident was to merely dismiss it as an “attack from the left” on Twitter and to invite others to post their “most embarrassing vacation photos.” He pumped his chest a bit more when responding to the latest headlines. “Years ago, in this video, I was being crass with a friend, trying to be funny,” the 26-year-old Congressman tweeted after the video clip was released. “We were acting foolish, and joking. That’s it.” … [Read more...] about It’s easy to feel Madison Cawthorn schadenfreude — but he’s right to call those video leaks blackmail

Republicans are hellbent on kicking Madison Cawthorn out for good
In 1965, when Lyndon Johnson was grappling with whether to fire J. Edgar Hoover as the head of the FBI , he said: “Well, it’s probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in.” In the case of the beleaguered freshman Republican Representative Madison Cawthorn , Republicans are putting the squeeze on him for being inside the tent and still pissing inside it. On Thursday evening, the Daily Mail published screenshots of a video of Representative Madison Cawthorn with his staffer Stephen Smith putting his hand on the congressman’s crotch. Cawthorn’s communications director initially said he could not give any response until he saw the video, but offered up an even more damning detail: Cawthorn and Smith are apparently cousins, which could mean that the congressman had violated a federal statute that says public officials cannot employ their own relatives. As observers might remember, Cawthorn’s latest troubles began in earnest last month … [Read more...] about Republicans are hellbent on kicking Madison Cawthorn out for good
Jake Daniels is a hero – more LGBT+ football players should follow suit
C ongratulations to Jake Daniels , the Blackpool FC player who has come out as gay aged 17, becoming the first active male player to come out at the top of the British male game since Justin Fashanu , who tragically took his own life in 1998. Conversations have spiralled for decades about why male footballers haven’t come out when statistically there are obviously gay men playing – and by contrast, the women’s team is replete with “out” players. Daniels becoming the first openly gay professional player in 30 years should be rightly praised, but questions remain: namely, why has it taken so long? In many ways, football feels like the last bastion of sexual intolerance; the last sport where you can’t say you’re gay, even though rugby, cricket and swimming have all had openly gay players for years. And while not enough praise can be heaped on Daniels for coming out, the reality of the scale of representation at the top of the Premier League is woeful. While football … [Read more...] about Jake Daniels is a hero – more LGBT+ football players should follow suit

Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups. YouTube's recommendation algorithm, they say, … [Read more...] about Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
Struggling with the cost of living? The Tories think it’s all your own fault
Scarcely a day seems to go by without some Tory MP making a fool of themselves by wading in and trying to be helpful to people struggling with the cost of living crisis. It’s getting to be like Wordle, a regular little tweet – you know it’s coming, even though you can’t say exactly what it will be – in this case, which particular backbencher or member of the government will come up with some outstandingly patronising piece of “advice”. Unlike Wordle, however, what the Tories say is an insult to intelligence. The latest one is somebody called Rachel Maclean, who is a junior minister in charge of safeguarding and partly responsible for that great public policy success – the Afghan refugee resettlement scheme. Her top tip for folks in poverty is to go out and get a better job , and if you can’t do that then beg your employer to let you work longer hours. In her words: “We have often heard in the past when people are facing problems with their budgets that one of the … [Read more...] about Struggling with the cost of living? Biden’s longtime advisor Antony Blinken emerges as his pick for secretary of State
WASHINGTON — President-elect Joe Biden has turned to one of his most trusted and long-serving foreign policy advisors as his choice for secretary of State. Biden is expected to nominate Antony Blinken, 58, a veteran diplomat and former senior official at the State Department and National Security Council, perhaps on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the Biden transition planning. For the record: 7:33 a.m. Nov. 24, 2020 An earlier version of this article said Antony Blinken was the descendant of Holocaust survivors. His stepfather was a Holocaust survivor. Blinken is seen as someone who could easily win Senate confirmation even if Republicans still control the chamber in the next Congress. Given the depth of his experience, he could hit the ground running, current and former diplomats said. Blinken was a deputy national security advisor and deputy secretary of State in the Obama administration as well as national security advisor to Vice President Biden … [Read more...] about Biden’s longtime advisor Antony Blinken emerges as his pick for secretary of State
Bae Doo-na’s hopes for Korean content go to infinity and beyond
Actor Bae Doo-na [NETFLIX] Actor Bae Doo-na, who has worked on Hollywood sci-fi projects such as “Cloud Atlas” (2012) and “Jupiter Ascending” (2015) and television series “Sense8” (2015-18) says that she couldn’t be more proud of her latest work — Netflix Korea’s highly anticipated sci-fi original series “The Silent Sea” which was released on the platform on Dec. 24. Although Netflix Korea has been continuously seeing global success, starting with writer Kim Eun-hee’s “Kingdom” (2019-) series and director Lee Eung-bok’s “Sweet Home” (2020), no one could have anticipated the new wave of attention on Korean content that “Squid Game” would bring. “Squid Game” became the most-watched Netflix content of all time with some 140 million viewers around the globe, while director Yeon Sang-ho’s first Netflix project “Hellbound” debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s daily list of most-viewed TV shows in the world. This is why the bar was set high for “The Silent Sea” — which is the first sci-fi … [Read more...] about Bae Doo-na’s hopes for Korean content go to infinity and beyond
Praia da Luz locals say Madeleine McCann disappearance is ‘thing nobody talks about now’
Genial South African Wim Bosman has just one rule in his Praia da Luz restaurant: “No talking about politics, religion… or Madeleine McCann”. It is 15 years since the youngster vanished from her parents’ holiday apartment in the resort while they dined in a nearby tapas bar. Yet, to this day, that night brings back painful memories for those who call “Luz” home. “It’s become the thing that nobody talks about,” says Wim, who opened Bosman’s restaurant a decade before Madeleine vanished just before turning four. “What happened to her is tragic and I cannot imagine what her parents have gone through but it’s part of the past here now. Madeleine disappeared 15 years ago on May 3 ( Image: METROPOLITAN POLICE/AFP via Gett) The sun-kissed resort has reportedly changed little in the past 15 years ( Image: PA) “If someone does mention it, it inevitably turns into an argument because people’s opinions differ so wildly. “Some blame the parents and say they … [Read more...] about Praia da Luz locals say Madeleine McCann disappearance is ‘thing nobody talks about now’
