With the price of petrol being more than ₹100 in the State, the popularity of battery vehicles have been growing steadily in the city. The sales of battery-operated two-wheelers have grown tremendously ever since people started favouring personal vehicles over public transportation owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commissioner of Transport and Road Safety, which is the nodal authority for keeping tabs of the number of vehicles being registered in the State, has recorded that a total of 22,133 battery-operated vehicles have been sold till June. A senior official said of the total, 19,986 were two-wheelers and 2,147 were other types of three- and four-wheelers. Fuel thefts from UK filling stations have reached record levels amid soaring pump prices. Industry body the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) said drive-off incidents – where a motorist fills up and makes no attempt to pay before leaving – have increased by 61% so far this year, compared with the same period in 2021. PRA executive director Gordon Balmer described the number of thefts as “going through the roof” with “10 incidents a day” being reported. Cash-strapped Sri Lanka suspended nationwide fuel sales, except for essential services, for nearly a fortnight as the island faces a rapidly worsening economic crisis. In a press conference held on Monday night, Cabinet spokesperson and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said private vehicles will be barred from buying fuel until July 10, after which the government has promised to ensure the usual supply. Authorities halted bus services between provinces and urged citizens to work from home in a bid to save fuel.
