June 28, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

With the price of petrol being more than ₹100 in the State, the popularity of battery vehicles have been growing steadily in the city. The sales of battery-operated two-wheelers have grown tremendously ever since people started favouring personal vehicles over public transportation owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commissioner of Transport and Road Safety, which is the nodal authority for keeping tabs of the number of vehicles being registered in the State, has recorded that a total of 22,133 battery-operated vehicles have been sold till June. A senior official said of the total, 19,986 were two-wheelers and 2,147 were other types of three- and four-wheelers. A number of companies, both established and new, have been launching a range of two-wheelers in the battery-operated segments, attracting a section of customers. June 29, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Fuel thefts from UK filling stations have reached record levels amid soaring pump prices. Industry body the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) said drive-off incidents – where a motorist fills up and makes no attempt to pay before leaving – have increased by 61% so far this year, compared with the same period in 2021. PRA executive director Gordon Balmer described the number of thefts as “going through the roof” with “10 incidents a day” being reported. Sri Lanka runs out of fuel, comes to a near-standstill

June 28, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Cash-strapped Sri Lanka suspended nationwide fuel sales, except for essential services, for nearly a fortnight as the island faces a rapidly worsening economic crisis. In a press conference held on Monday night, Cabinet spokesperson and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said private vehicles will be barred from buying fuel until July 10, after which the government has promised to ensure the usual supply. Authorities halted bus services between provinces and urged citizens to work from home in a bid to save fuel. Schools also remain shut. “Fuel will be issued only to health, defence, power and export sectors from midnight today until July 10,” Mr. Bandula Gunawardena told reporters. The state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) will issue diesel and petrol only for essential services with effect from midnight, he said. These services include ports, airports, health, food distribution and agriculture. As fuel shortages intensified over the past couple of weeks, Sri … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka runs out of fuel, comes to a near-standstill

Newsom signs state budget bills, with gas refunds to 17.5 million California taxpayers

July 1, 2022 by www.latimes.com

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday signed into law key elements of a new $307.9-billion state budget, a spending plan centered on gas refunds for 17.5 million taxpayers to soften the sting of high fuel prices and the cost of living. The refunds, varying from as little as $200 for individuals up to $1,050 for couples with children, are the hallmark of the state’s effort to return a portion of an anticipated $101.4-billion surplus back to Californians. The governor and lawmakers also invested heavily in K-12 public education, directed billions of dollars to secure enough power to keep the lights on during heat waves and earmarked $47 billion for infrastructure projects over the next three years. “This budget invests in our core values at a pivotal moment, safeguarding women’s right to choose, expanding health care access to all and supporting the most vulnerable among us while shoring up our future with funds to combat the climate crisis, bolster our energy grid, … [Read more...] about Newsom signs state budget bills, with gas refunds to 17.5 million California taxpayers

‘Keep subsidies to stop inflation’

July 1, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: The government should continue controlling the price of petrol, energy and electricity and food to curb inflation, say economists. While price changes are cyclical and economists expect inflation to ease for the year end, they have called for the retention of subsidies and more assistance for the low-income groups. Malaysia University of Science and Technology economist Prof Dr Geoffrey Williams and HELP University economist Prof Dr Paolo Casadio said the government should also bring down the electric tariffs. “The reduction of the electricity bills can bring an easing of 0.5% in inflation and at the same time boost the disposable income of the consumers. “We think this manoeuvre could be done again, subsidised by the additional revenues the government gets from the high oil price through the government-linked companies (GLCs) such as Petronas,” they said in a joint reply in an interview. Although it would not be an easy feat, independent economic analyst … [Read more...] about ‘Keep subsidies to stop inflation’

Joe Biden Insists He Will Not Beg Saudi Arabia to Produce More Oil

June 30, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

President Joe Biden refused Thursday to ask Saudi Arabia to produce more oil to bring down the cost of gasoline in the United States and around the world. Biden was specifically asked during his press conference in Europe about what he would say to Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud or Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about oil during their scheduled meeting in July. “No, I’m not going to ask them,” he said, noting that he already “indicated” to all the Gulf heads of state his desire for them to produce more oil. “I hope we see them, in their own interest, concluding that makes sense to do,” Biden said. Biden argued that his trip to Saudi Arabia was about Middle East peace negotiations with Israel, not the production of oil. “I’m sure — it’s in Saudi Arabia, but it’s not about Saudi Arabia,” he said. “It’s in Saudi Arabia.” Biden said he was not even sure he would end up speaking to the Saudi leaders. “I’m not even sure; I guess I will see the King and the Crown … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Insists He Will Not Beg Saudi Arabia to Produce More Oil

Increasing U.S. oil production could set climate efforts back decades

June 30, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

While several Republican lawmakers have called on President Joe Biden to increase domestic energy production in the wake of rising gas prices, energy experts warn that doing so could be detrimental to climate action goals that the U.S. is already not living up to. As of June 30, the American Automobile Association reported that the average price for gas sat at nearly $4.857 per gallon across the nation, leading some members of Congress to blame the Biden administration's "war on American energy" and restrictive policies for oil companies. But climate activists and progressives argue against the call to increase domestic production of oil, saying that doing so could undermine the president's climate-focused agenda and calls for transition to cleaner energy. Samantha Gross, director of the Energy Security and Climate Initiative at the Brookings Institution, told Newsweek that the two sides put Biden in a "real pickle" and that any policies moving forward will require a … [Read more...] about Increasing U.S. oil production could set climate efforts back decades

Let’s Go Brandon! Saudi Economy Booms amid American Energy Crisis

June 30, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) published a report Thursday that showed the oil industry booming with ten-percent growth, thanks in no small part to President Joe Biden’s attack on the American energy industry, while unemployment fell to 10.1 percent, its lowest level since 2008. The robust Saudi economy will complicate President Biden’s efforts to wheedle or cajole more oil out of the Saudis during his visit in July , a last-ditch bid to bring U.S. gas prices down before the midterm election. Biden has little leverage over the Saudis, and they will see no good reason to bring oil prices down by increasing output. Outside the still-dominant oil industry, the Saudi economy grew by 3.7 percent, while Biden’s policies have pushed America to the edge of a recession , and possibly over the edge. Even as it approaches a 15-year low, Saudi unemployment is still high by U.S. standards due to a very low workforce … [Read more...] about Let’s Go Brandon!
