As college admissions season begins following the announcement of the Board Exam results in Tamil Nadu, three students from the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School will now set their sights on starting undergraduate programmes in Japan come September. The students, Abitha Baskar, Shivani Krishnasamy, and Sonali Prabhu heard about the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Oita from their school principal, and were enthused about applying to study there for the same given the programmes as well as scholarships the institution offered. “I have been accepted for an undergraduate programme in culture, society and media, and have secured an 80% scholarship on my tuition fees,” said Abitha, whose father is a welder and mother is a homemaker. The role of caste in economic transformation
India has been in a phase of jobless growth for at least two decades now, coupled with rising poverty and discontent in rural areas. The ongoing protests against the Agnipath programme , agitations against farm laws a year before, and agitation for reservation by agriculture castes are all arguably an outcome simmering discontent due to this jobless economic growth. Why could India not generate a pattern of growth that produces jobs and inclusive development in the way most of the East Asian countries have done? Caste, which is mostly confined to politics, could be among the answers, a structural factor that impedes economic transformation in India. Indeed, there is a link between economic transformation and caste in India, which is often missed by academics. In contemporary literature too, caste enters as a post-facto category in understanding inequalities in economic and social outcomes when the fact is that caste is central to economic transformation itself. Caste through its … [Read more...] about The role of caste in economic transformation
Tribute to musicologist M.B. Vedavalli
We have a host of musicians but only a few erudite musicologists, and one of them was M.B. Vedavalli. She was a popular musicologist, scholar, author, and an eminent teacher. Her expertise in pallavi singing was honed under stalwarts such as Mudikondan Venkatarama Iyer. Her doctoral thesis on ‘Mysore as a Seat of Music’ is an important contribution to the world of music. Chinese fans pay rich tributes to China’s legendary Indian classical dancer Zhang Jun
The India-China frictions took a backseat for a while in Beijing as a large number of Chinese flocked to a scintillating show of Indian classical dance performances to pay emotional tribute to Zhang Jun, China’s legendary dancer of Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi. Tired of COVID lockdowns and other restrictions in Beijing, over 300 Chinese fans of Zhang thronged the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) auditorium on Friday night to watch sterling performances from young Chinese children as well as highly talented professionals who devoted their lives practicing and performing Indian classical dance forms in this country. It was a dream come true for Jin Shan Shan , Zhang’s ardent student and widely acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer both in India and China who took to her Guru’s footsteps and devoted her life in popularising the Indian classical art form. The audience included India’s Ambassador to China Pradeep Kumar Rawat and former Vice Minister of Finance of China and … [Read more...] about Chinese fans pay rich tributes to China’s legendary Indian classical dancer Zhang Jun
Misdirected ideas can harm the judiciary
Over the last two decades, the attention devoted to the role of the judiciary has increased almost exponentially. It is rare for a day to pass without at least a couple of front page stories in our national dailies devoted to what transpired in the constitutional courts. Even as I write this, the cameras are slowly turning towards the Supreme Court to see how the Maharashtra imbroglio will play out. It is not surprising, therefore, that the events at court invite opinions and views, many of them from those who ply their trade within those hallowed portals (which includes this writer). Most of these pieces are devoted to specific judgments and ephemeral events, but ever so often, we see one that deals with institutional issues — larger malaises that need to be addressed — and then, we consider those suggestions through a wider lens. One of these is Sriram Panchu’s article ‘ A wish list for reform in India’s higher judiciary ’ (published in The Hindu on June 22, 2022). There are, … [Read more...] about Misdirected ideas can harm the judiciary
