Guerrero made history earlier this year when she was the first Latina confirmed to the California Supreme Court. Now she's poised to do it again as the first Latina to lead the state's sprawling court system that includes about 2,175 judges across 58 trial courts and 105 justices on the Courts of Appeal. “Justice Guerrero has established herself as a widely respected jurist with a formidable intellect and command of the law and deep commitment to equal justice and public service,” Newsom said in a news release announcing Guerrero’s nomination. Delhi Police to investigate all FIRs against Nupur Sharma: Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Wednesday transferred FIRs registered against former BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma in the Prophet remarks row to the Delhi Police. The Delhi Police would also investigate in case any FIRs are registered in the future against Ms. Sharma, the court said. A Special Bench of Justices Surya Kant and J.B. Pardiwala gave Ms. Sharma liberty to approach the Delhi High Court seeking to quash the cases against her. The court refused a suggestion made by West Bengal counsel and senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy for a joint special investigation team to probe the case under the supervision of the apex court. The Bench said an FIR has been filed against Ms. Sharma in Delhi with the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police, and this specialised branch could carry on the probe in all the FIRs. The IFSO could collect information necessary for its investigation from other states. The Bench extended the protection granted to Ms. Sharma on … [Read more...] about Delhi Police to investigate all FIRs against Nupur Sharma: Supreme Court
This energy source doesn’t exist in California. But it could account for 25% of the state’s electric power in the future
California regulators amped up the state’s clean energy goals Wednesday by voting in new ambitious targets for offshore wind development. The new targets, unanimously approved by the California Energy Commission, call for the state to produce 25 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2045 — which would be more than 11 times the capacity of the state’s last remaining nuclear plant. Eventually, academics at UC Berkeley believe that offshore wind could account for a quarter of the state’s electricity needs, even though no offshore wind farms currently exist in the state. But the process is starting soon: By the end of this year, two sites in California, off Morro Bay (San Luis Obispo County) and Eureka (Humboldt County), will be up for auction. The sites have the potential to produce over 4.5 gigawatts of energy . Future locations could include Cape Mendocino, an offshore area near the existing Humboldt Bay area, according to a California Energy Commission staff report. “We have a … [Read more...] about This energy source doesn’t exist in California. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese court rejected an appeal Wednesday from a woman seeking an apology and damages in a high-profile case from the country's short-lived #MeToo movement. The court in Beijing ruled after a closed-door hearing that evidence submitted by Zhou Xiaoxuan was insufficient to prove sexual harassment, upholding the initial judgment last September. Zhou, a former intern at state broadcaster China Central Television, had accused CCTV host Zhu Jun of groping and forcibly kissing her in 2014. She reported the case to police in 2014 and went public about it in 2018, when other women began speaking out. After flourishing briefly, the #MeToo movement was largely shut down. Activists found their online posts censored and faced pressure from authorities when trying to hold protests. Police cordoned off the sidewalk outside the court building on Wednesday and told … [Read more...] about Chinese court rejects appeal in high-profile #MeToo case
Fair trial goes beyond courts, to the police and media
Recently, the Chief Justice of India objected to the lack of media accountability in the media’s coverage of legal issues. His remarks came less than a month after the Delhi police admitted to informing the media about the outcome of AltNews’ co-founder Mohammed Zubair ’s bail hearing before the judicial order was even pronounced in open court. While the matter of how this information was known to the police remains an open issue, it is problematic that a considerable portion of its news coverage depicted the remarks of the police officer as fact without waiting for the judicial order. The police as source In criminal cases that attract the most sensationalist media coverage, media attention is often drawn toward investigation and early trial stages, with a notable disconnect from eventual outcomes of trial that follow several months or even years after an arrest. This makes the police a crucial source for the media and communication between the two institutions is often a … [Read more...] about Fair trial goes beyond courts, to the police and media
House-Building
BECAUSE our architecture is bad, and because the architecture of our forefathers in the Middle Ages was good, Mr. Ruskin and others seem to think there is no salvation for us until we build in the same spirit as they did. But that we should do so no more follows than that we should envy those geological ages when the club-mosses were of the size of forest-trees, and the frogs as big as oxen. There are many advantages to be had in the forests of the Amazon and the interior of Borneo, — inexhaustible fertility, endless water-power, — but no one thinks of going there to live. No age is without its attractions. There would be much to envy in the Greek or the Roman life, if we could have them clear of drawbacks. Many persons would be glad always to find Emerson in State Street, or sauntering in the Mall, ready to talk with all comers, — or to hear the latest words of Bancroft or Lowell from their own lips at the cattle-show or the militia-muster. The Roman villas had some excellent … [Read more...] about House-Building

Woman alleges she was sedated during abortion rights protest at Warriors game
An abortion rights activist filed a federal lawsuit on Wednesday against the city of San Francisco and its police and fire departments, alleging she was injected with a sedative during a protest at a recent Warriors -Celtics NBA finals game. On June 13, Kareim McKnight and her friend Amanda Piasecki walked down to the floor of Chase Center during the game's first quarter, with banners reading, “Overturn Roe? Hell No!” to protest the Supreme Court’s expected decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, said the lawsuit, filed by civil rights attorney John Burris in the U.S. District Court for Northern California. As McKnight and her friend chanted, “Abortion on demand and without apology,” near seats on the floor, they were “forcibly dragged” out of the arena into the stadium garage, where McKnight was thrown to the ground and handcuffed, the complaint said.
