Immediately after the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the federal right to abortion on Friday , Fox News hosts and analysts declared that this was a “wonderful day” and a “victory for former President Donald Trump.” As millions of Americans reeled from the loss of Roe v. Wade protections, Fox News legal analyst Andrew McCarthy declared that this ruling was a cause for celebration across the nation. “It’s a great day for life. A great day for the restoration of constitutional jurisprudence. It is just a great day,” he crowed. “The court, despite the terrible onslaught of protests and intimidation it sensed over the last seven weeks, stood strong,” he added, referring to April’s leak of a draft of the opinion. McCarthy went on to praise the court for doing “the usual yeoman’s work” in getting this decision done, adding that it “befits the grandeur of this occasion.” Additionally, he pointed out that he’s “been working for decades” to get Roe stricken down. … [Read more...] about Fox News Celebrates the Death of Roe: ‘It’s a Wonderful Day!’

Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
ATLANTA — The impact was immediate: the moment the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade , Robin Marty, the operations director of the West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, told nurses, desk staff and a doctor on Friday they could no longer provide abortions. “I can’t believe they f—ing did it,” she said via phone. “You have to stop now!” Just as Roe was a landmark case for women’s rights in 1973, its reversal Friday is a resounding, if expected, ruling that will again reshape abortion in this volatile and divided nation. It left millions of women in conservative states wondering what their options are. Marty’s clinic staff had to tell more than 20 patients in their waiting room that they could continue their ultrasounds and counseling, but could not have their abortions. Then they began calling up about 100 patients, one by one, to cancel appointments and refer them to a clinic about 200 miles away in Atlanta, where the procedure is still legal. But the Atlanta … [Read more...] about Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
SCOTUS Ruling On Guns Puts Several Other Blue States In The Crosshairs, Legal Experts Say
The Supreme Court’s ruling Thursday in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen sets a precedent that could be used in challenges against other similar “may issue” state gun laws, according to legal experts. The Court sided with the plaintiffs in a 6-3 decision, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing the majority opinion . It ruled New York’s regulation requiring “proper cause” to obtain a license to conceal carry a handgun violates the Fourteenth Amendment by prohibiting a law-abiding citizen from bearing arms for self-defense purposes. In “may issue” states, authorities “have discretion to deny concealed-carry licenses even when the applicant satisfies the statutory criteria, usually because the applicant has not demonstrated cause or suitability for the relevant license,” Thomas wrote in the opinion. In “shall issue” states, officials typically do not have that same discretion and must provide a qualified and properly-documented applicant with the relevant … [Read more...] about SCOTUS Ruling On Guns Puts Several Other Blue States In The Crosshairs, Legal Experts Say

If student deaths won’t stop fraternity hazing, what will?
The story is eerily familiar. A college student eager to make new friends and find a community decides to pledge a fraternity. To gain entrance, he has to suffer through a series of hazing rituals. One night, he is forced to binge drink, getting blackout drunk. By morning, he's dead. His family is devastated. His hometown mourns. The college calls it a preventable tragedy and says it might start a committee to investigate hazing. The national fraternity chapter categorically denounces the practice. The parents appear on TV; through tears they say how greatly they will miss their son. He was their light. He had so much ahead of him. The coverage dies down, but the grief remains for those closest to him. Eventually, the community forgets — until it happens again. And it always happens again. Since 2000, there have been more than 50 hazing-related deaths. The causes are varied — heatstroke, drowning, alcohol poisoning, head injury, asphyxia, cardiac arrest — but the … [Read more...] about If student deaths won’t stop fraternity hazing, what will?

With accounts flush, budget talks come down to schools aid
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — With a week to go until the state's budget deadline, Gov. Tom Wolf and leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature are working through their remaining differences as they try to produce an agreement on a roughly $42 billion budget plan that they say will marshal substantial new aid for Pennsylvania’s public schools and environmental cleanups while cutting corporate taxes. Greasing the skids this year is a massive influx of tax receipts leaving the state’s bank accounts flush with — by some estimates — $12 billion in reserves and surpluses, boosted by inflation and an economy juiced with federal pandemic subsidies. There will be no broad tax cut, but there will be substantial new aid for public schools, as well as for services for the disabled, children and elderly that employ low-paid workers in high-turnover professions that suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lawmakers are also expected to approve significant sums of new money for mental health … [Read more...] about With accounts flush, budget talks come down to schools aid

It’s Official: The Supreme Court Has Overturned Roe v. Wade
Nearly half a century after the Supreme Court ruled that the ability to end a pregnancy was a constitutional right, the nation’s highest court has overturned Roe v. Wade . The majority opinion, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, ruled that the 1973 decision was wrong in its determination that an implied right to privacy in the U.S. Constitution protected a patient’s decision to have an abortion. “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled,” Alito wrote for the 6-3 majority. “The authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” The decision effectively ends abortion access for roughly 40 million women and girls in nearly two dozen states across the country. Thirteen of those states have pre-emptively enacted “trigger laws” intended to impose severe restrictions on the procedure in the event of a Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe . Others have pre- Roe bans that remain on the books or … [Read more...] about It’s Official: The Supreme Court Has Overturned Roe v. Wade
