The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) answered the prayers of “millions upon millions” of Americans by properly interpreting the Constitution, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said in a statement Friday following the SCOTUS ruling overturning Roe v. Wade . “The prayers of millions have been answered. For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history, or structure of the Constitution,” DeSantis said in a statement. Ashley Oliver / Breitbart News “By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Dobb s majority has restored the people’s role in our republic and a sense of hope that every life counts,” he continued, promising that the Sunshine State will continue on its path to protect life. “Florida will continue to defend its recently enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by … [Read more...] about Ron DeSantis: SCOTUS ‘Answered the Prayers of Millions Upon Millions of Americans’

Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
ATLANTA — The impact was immediate: the moment the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade , Robin Marty, the operations director of the West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, told nurses, desk staff and a doctor on Friday they could no longer provide abortions. “I can’t believe they f—ing did it,” she said via phone. “You have to stop now!” Just as Roe was a landmark case for women’s rights in 1973, its reversal Friday is a resounding, if expected, ruling that will again reshape abortion in this volatile and divided nation. It left millions of women in conservative states wondering what their options are. Marty’s clinic staff had to tell more than 20 patients in their waiting room that they could continue their ultrasounds and counseling, but could not have their abortions. Then they began calling up about 100 patients, one by one, to cancel appointments and refer them to a clinic about 200 miles away in Atlanta, where the procedure is still legal. But the Atlanta … [Read more...] about Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
Border Agents Stop Driver Attempting To Smuggle Enough Fentanyl To Kill Around 2 Million People
Border Patrol agents in California on Monday seized enough fentanyl to kill over 2 million people. Agents in the El Centro border sector searched the vehicle at a highway checkpoint, where they found six black packages wrapped in cellophane hidden inside the car’s dashboard and air vents, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Wednesday. The male driver, 53, and the female passenger, 27, in the car were both from Mexico and didn’t have the proper documents to be in the U.S. The seizure included 4.2 kilograms of fentanyl and 2.1 kilograms of heroin, according to CBP. Using the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) own metric that 1 kilogram of fentanyl could kill 500,000 people, the fentanyl seized has the potential to kill around 2.1 million people. Together, the drugs had an estimated street value of $189,200, according to CBP. With accounts flush, budget talks come down to schools aid
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — With a week to go until the state's budget deadline, Gov. Tom Wolf and leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature are working through their remaining differences as they try to produce an agreement on a roughly $42 billion budget plan that they say will marshal substantial new aid for Pennsylvania’s public schools and environmental cleanups while cutting corporate taxes. Greasing the skids this year is a massive influx of tax receipts leaving the state’s bank accounts flush with — by some estimates — $12 billion in reserves and surpluses, boosted by inflation and an economy juiced with federal pandemic subsidies. There will be no broad tax cut, but there will be substantial new aid for public schools, as well as for services for the disabled, children and elderly that employ low-paid workers in high-turnover professions that suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lawmakers are also expected to approve significant sums of new money for mental health … [Read more...] about With accounts flush, budget talks come down to schools aid
It’s Official: The Supreme Court Has Overturned Roe v. Wade
Nearly half a century after the Supreme Court ruled that the ability to end a pregnancy was a constitutional right, the nation’s highest court has overturned Roe v. Wade . The majority opinion, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, ruled that the 1973 decision was wrong in its determination that an implied right to privacy in the U.S. Constitution protected a patient’s decision to have an abortion. “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled,” Alito wrote for the 6-3 majority. “The authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” The decision effectively ends abortion access for roughly 40 million women and girls in nearly two dozen states across the country. Thirteen of those states have pre-emptively enacted “trigger laws” intended to impose severe restrictions on the procedure in the event of a Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe . Others have pre- Roe bans that remain on the books or … [Read more...] about It’s Official: The Supreme Court Has Overturned Roe v. Wade
Alito’s ‘Dobbs’ Opinion Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Judicial Activism at Its Most Self-Deceptive
It’s happened : Roe v. Wade is overturned . Abortion will soon be illegal in two dozen states . In this country, according to the Supreme Court, women have no constitutional right to control their own bodies . But what really happened? According to the Court’s conservative majority, the Supreme Court is properly exercising its role to interpret the Constitution. As Justice Brett Kavanaugh put it in his concurrence to Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , “the issue before this Court…is not the policy or morality of abortion. The issue before this Court is what the Constitution says about abortion.” And so Justice Samuel Alito’s 79-page opinion carefully and meticulously dissects Roe and explains why there is no “right to abortion” in the Constitution’s explicit language or our “nation’s history and traditions.” But that’s not really what happened, right? We all know, or should know, that Justices Alito, Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Gorsuch were all … [Read more...] about Alito’s ‘Dobbs’ Opinion Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Judicial Activism at Its Most Self-Deceptive
