Five Chinese state-owned companies, including oil giant Sinopec and China Life Insurance, said on Friday they would delist from the New York Stock Exchange, amid economic and diplomatic tensions with the United States. The companies, which also include Aluminium Corporation of China (Chalco), PetroChina and Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co, each said that they would apply to delist their American Depository Shares this month. The five, which in May were flagged by the U.S. securities regulator as failing to meet its auditing standards, will keep their listings in Hong Kong and mainland Chinese markets. Beijing and Washington are in talks to resolve a long-running audit dispute that could see Chinese companies banned from U.S. exchanges if they do not comply with U.S. rules. Washington has long demanded complete access to the books of U.S.-listed Chinese companies, but Beijing bars foreign inspection of audit documents from local accounting firms, citing national security … [Read more...] about Five Chinese state-owned companies to delist from NYSE amid U.S. tensions

US Fails to Address Reparations’ Calls at UN Race Record Review
Washington vowed to do better on battling racial discrimination at an emotion-laden UN review of its record Friday, but officials did not respond to calls for reparations after centuries of systemic racism. “We need to continue to make strong, concerted efforts to eliminate the scourge of racial discrimination in our country,” said Desiree Cormier Smith, who was recently appointed as the first US special representative for racial equity and justice. Speaking before the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), she stressed Washington’s commitment “to eliminating systemic racism”, but acknowledged there was “so much left to do”. Cormier Smith, herself of African American descent, co-chaired a large, diverse US delegation at the two days of hearings in Geneva. She pointed out that the issue was “deeply personal for many of us”. The committee of 18 independent experts evaluates how countries adhere to an international convention on eliminating … [Read more...] about US Fails to Address Reparations’ Calls at UN Race Record Review
Moscow already “studying” top-secret records from Trump raid: Russian media
Hosts on Russia's state-owned Russia-1 television channel said that officials in Moscow have already been "studying" top secret and other classified documents the FBI sought through a search warrant of former President Donald Trump 's Mar-a-Lago resort home. The FBI, with the approval of Attorney General Merrick Garland , carried out a raid of Trump's Florida residence looking for top secret and sensitive compartmentalized information, as well as other classified documents, on Monday. The Washington Post reported on Thursday that records related to nuclear weapons were sought by the federal agents, but Trump described that reporting as a "hoax." Russia-1 reported on the raid in a segment shared to Twitter late Friday evening by Julia Davis, a columnist for The Daily Beast and the creator of the Russian Media Monitor. During the segment, state-run television host Evgeny Popov mentioned the reporting about nuclear weapons. "Turns out that the investigation against … [Read more...] about Moscow already “studying” top-secret records from Trump raid: Russian media
U.S. calling Russia terrorism sponsor would be “point of no return”: Moscow
Alexander Darchiev, a Russian Foreign Ministry official, warned the United States on Friday that if it designates Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism it will have crossed a "point of no return." The comments from Darchiev, the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's North American Department, came in an interview with the Russian-state news agency TASS, and as some lawmakers from both sides of the aisle pressure the Biden administration to give Moscow such a label. Senator Lindsey Graham , a South Carolina Republican, and Senator Dick Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, told CNN last week that Biden or Congress should make such a designation amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine . "I hope the president will decide to adopt this stance voluntarily and he hasn't taken it off the table on the state-sponsored terrorism," Blumenthal said in an interview with the network earlier this month. Meanwhile, Graham said he'd "like to work" with the Biden administration to enact … [Read more...] about U.S. calling Russia terrorism sponsor would be “point of no return”: Moscow
Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
MASK CONFUSION… NY TIMES… DAVID LEONHARDT: A Confusing Message — The C.D.C. recommends indoor masking for the vaccinated, but only in some places. As you can see, most of the Northeast and upper Midwest, as well as much of the West, have only “moderate” or “low” transmission. If that stays true, vaccinated residents in those places can generally remain unmasked, the C.D.C. says. […] Breakthrough infections among the vaccinated appear to be only a modest reason that the number of new cases has been rising, as I explained in Monday’s newsletter. When vaccinated people do get the virus, they are less likely to pass it on to others — and much less likely to get very sick. […] The country was polarized long before Covid. But the C.D.C. has not maximized its chances of being heard, either. That’s the communication problem I mentioned above. Its announcement of the new guidelines was both vague and technical, making it hard for many nonexperts to understand. The agency … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Mask Confusion
Nagasaki marks atomic bombing anniversary amid nuclear war fears
Nagasaki paid tribute to the victims of the U. S. atomic bombing 77 years ago on August 9, with the mayor saying Russia's war on Ukraine showed the world that another nuclear attack is not just a worry but “a tangible and present crisis.” Mayor Tomihisa Taue, in his speech on August 9 at the Nagasaki Peace Park, said nuclear weapons can be used as long as they exist and their elimination is the only way to save the future of humankind. Russia's invasion of Ukraine and threat of nuclear weapons use came only a month after it and four other nuclear powers pledged in a statement that nuclear war should never be fought, Mr. Taue noted. United Nations chief urges nuclear powers to abide by no-first-use pledge “This has shown the world that the use of nuclear weapons is not a groundless fear but a tangible and present crisis,” he said. The belief that nuclear weapons can be possessed not for actual use but for deterrence “is a fantasy, nothing more than a mere hope." Trump in “very substantial legal jeopardy” after FBI search: Conway
Conservative lawyer George Conway said Friday that former President Donald Trump could face legal problems after the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Monday to retrieve classified documents that the ex-president allegedly took with him when he left the White House last year. During his interview, CNN anchor Erin Burnett asked the lawyer whether or not he thinks Trump is in trouble after the raid, in which Conway responded: "Yeah, I think he's in very substantial legal jeopardy." "If anybody else had done this, as I said last night on your show, if a national security adviser had done this, if an assistant to the president had done this, if I had done this or you had done this, we'd probably be already charged," he added. The FBI, with the approval of Attorney General Merrick Garland , carried out a search warrant of Mar-a-Lago looking for top secret (TS) and sensitive compartmentalized information (SCI) as well as other classified documents. Jury Finds Democrat PAC Defamed Roy Moore and Awards Him $8.2M
A federal jury in Alabama determined that a Democrat Super PAC defamed Judge Roy Moore, former Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Alabama, and awarded him $8.2 million in damages for the injury to his reputation on Friday. The focus of Moore’s lawsuit against the D.C.-based Senate Majority PAC was an ad they ran during his Senate campaign against former Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) in Alabama’s 2017 special election. Moore’s candidacy in Alabama was derailed after the Washington Post published a report claiming Moore made sexual advances against four teenage girls between 1977 and 1982. As the Associated Press reported : The lawsuit centered on one television commercial that recounted accusations against Moore in various news articles. Moore’s attorneys argued the ad, through the juxtaposition of statements, falsely claimed he solicited sex from young girls at a shopping mall, including another 14-year-old who was working as a Santa’s helper, and that resulted in him … [Read more...] about Jury Finds Democrat PAC Defamed Roy Moore and Awards Him $8.2M
Exclusive — Carl Paladino: Susan Rice Likely Behind Mar-a-Lago Raid
Deep State types such as Susan Rice are likely behind the FBI’s raid of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, Carl Paladino, a Republican upstate New York businessman who is running for Congress in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, told Breitbart News Saturday . He contended that it would have to be someone other than President Biden, who “isn’t there” but, rather, is vacationing “all the time.” “RINOs” do not want change in Washington, DC, Paladino said as he described the current Republican Caucus in the House as a “disaster,” pointing to the Trump era as an example of how to get things done. “People admired him [Trump] for that tenacity,” going after the system every day, Paladino said, particularly “fighting the Washington swamp.” “[If] he had another term, [he] would be able to do wonderful things for this country,” the candidate said, explaining that he, too, hopes to bring that sort of leadership to the nation’s capital. However, there are currently so many … [Read more...] about Exclusive — Carl Paladino: Susan Rice Likely Behind Mar-a-Lago Raid
Texan Found Guilty of Child Sex Crimes Drinks Liquid in Court, Dies
A 57-year-old man on trial for child sexual assault in Texas drank an unknown liquid in the courtroom and died later that day, WFAA reported Friday. Edward Peter Leclair of Frisco was facing several counts of assault regarding a single victim, offenses that occurred over a two-month period in 2016, Denton County jail records showed, per the outlet. He was arrested in 2018, and jury selection began Monday at the Denton County Courts Building. According to First Assistant Attorney Jamie Beck of the Denton County District Attorney’s Office, the jury entered, sat down, and the defendant and his counsel stood up. Moments later, Judge Lee Gabriel began reading the verdict which said Leclair was guilty on all counts. “It’s during this process that he had a bottle of water with him at the counsel table, and he chugged it,” Beck recalled, adding, “It wasn’t like he was just taking sips of water. He was literally throwing it back, so to speak.” The man reportedly had not … [Read more...] about Texan Found Guilty of Child Sex Crimes Drinks Liquid in Court, Dies
