Experts have predicted that an " extreme heat belt " will settle over the U.S. by the middle of this century. Nonprofit group First Street Foundation has modeled how the intensity of heatwaves will change across the country over the coming years. Key findings from its report indicate that millions of people will be affected by extreme heat in the next few decades, and these effects will be worse in the landlocked states. The "extreme heat belt", as dubbed by the researchers, will span 13 states across the South and Midwest , from parts of Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana through Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky and Illinois, and the borders of Nebraska. Other states affected outside of this cluster will be California, Arizona, Nevada, as well as Florida and the Carolinas on the East Coast. In 2023, the model finds that 50 counties, home to over 8 million people, will experience temperatures over 125F, which is the highest level of … [Read more...] about The 13 states to fall into U.S. extreme heat belt in next 30 years

‘Cause and no effect as Labour forgets lesson of last 30 years by getting tough on crime’
Now I’m not one to bemoan anyone else’s work, particularly at this time of year when your mind is drifting to holidays and there are French Martinis to be drunk. But there was news put out by Labour that was really bad. It was a press release about the country being ravaged by fire and had some really scary stats – 440 wildfires so far this year, 21% of firefighters cut since 2010, and exceptional levels of risk. It’s a serious matter, covering a range of issues from climate change to austerity. But then came a quote from Shadow Paymaster General Fleur Anderson who said: “Conservative ministers have put the smoke alarm on snooze for far too long.” Discuss causes of crime .. discuss Now maybe I’ve missed something here, and if I have I will apologise unreservedly, but do smoke alarms really have snooze buttons? I mean, why would a smoke alarm have a snooze button? Pointless, right? In fact, beyond pointless. Who would be alerted to a fire and then go, “You know … [Read more...] about ‘Cause and no effect as Labour forgets lesson of last 30 years by getting tough on crime’
Mets starter Carlos Carrasco to miss next three to four weeks with low-grade oblique strain
Mets starter Carlos Carrasco was placed on the 15-day IL due to a low-grade strain in his left oblique. The Mets estimate his recovery timetable to be about three to four weeks. “Carlos got the test back, it’s actually pretty good news,” Buck Showalter offered optimistically. “Grade 1 (strain), that’s good news. We thought it could have been something a little deeper. We hope it’s not as long as some of those things take, we’ll see.” Carrasco left Monday’s game after two innings, which were interrupted by a rain delay. On his way into the tunnel after the second, he could be seen grabbing at his oblique. “I actually look at it as, maybe, an opportunity to freshen him up arm-wise,” Showalter said. “I think he’s exceeded the things that we thought he might do.” Stephen Nogosek was brought up from Syracuse to replace Carrasco. Nogosek has pitched in nine games for the Mets this season with a 2.30 ERA. Additionally, the Mets made a right-handed reliever swap. Adonis Medina was … [Read more...] about Mets starter Carlos Carrasco to miss next three to four weeks with low-grade oblique strain

MLB 2019 Opening Day: World Series odds for all 30 teams
MLB Opening Day is traditionally a time where certainties are few and far between, as teams take their first tentative steps into the new season. This year is no different, but a modicum of certainty can be found in the knowledge that the race for the World Series should be a close affair. Or so bookmakers seem to believe. Data compiled by Bovada shows the Boston Red Sox , New York Yankees and Houston Astros all begin the season with odds of 6/1 (+600 in moneyline terms) to triumph in the 2019 World Series. The Red Sox opened at 7/1 shortly after beating the Los Angeles Dodgers to claim the title in October and moved to 6/1 in the first week of pre-season. Boston won 108 games last season and has plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the new campaign. In J.D. Martinez, Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi the Red Sox boast some of the biggest stars in the MLB and their starting rotation is arguably second-to-none in the majors. However, they have lost Craig Kimbrel in … [Read more...] about MLB 2019 Opening Day: World Series odds for all 30 teams

Big Tech’s talent conundrum
At the end of 2019, Big Tech firms were hungry for talent. Google, in its annual report, said it increased the number of employees by nearly 23% to 1,18,899. The search giant noted it would onboard more engineers and product managers to run its services. The company was also keen on bulking up its sales team to grow cloud business. Other top tech firms too sought to increase their employee numbers. But COVID-19 upended the global economy, making several businesses re-draw their strategies and change course. Why People Near Biden Are Jumping Ship Before The Red November Wave
Members of President Joe Biden’s administration, his voter base and Congressional Democrats are jumping off Biden’s sinking ship of poll numbers in the months leading up to the November midterms. Poll after poll shows the majority of American people disapprove of the way Biden is handling the presidency, including minority voters, who have historically made up a large percentage of the Democratic Party’s voter base. Polled voters say they are concerned about the economy in the U.S. far more than any other issue. The president’s approval ratings have hit the 30s, with a Reuters/Ipsos poll published Tuesday showing Biden’s public approval rating at 39% in the third straight weekly decline. Among party lines, 74% of Democrats said they approved of Biden, amounting to an 11% drop from August, according to Reuters. Just 11% of Republicans said they approved. His lowest approval numbers were in April, according to a Quinnipiac University poll, sitting at 33%. The Tuesday … [Read more...] about Why People Near Biden Are Jumping Ship Before The Red November Wave
