THE “Beast from the East” will return to batter Britain with heavy snow and freezing temperatures through March, the Met Office weather forecasters have confirmed. The same UK weather warnings and patterns from last year that sparked the cold wave have been spotted again. It said a sudden stratospheric warning had appeared during the Christmas period when there was a sharp increase in temperatures. When this happens in the Arctic it can lead to a rush of cold air blowing eastwards across Europe in the next couple of weeks, bringing freezing temperatures to the continent. An icy blast of freezing Siberian winds bringing frosty temperatures and heavy snow to most of the UK early last year is what caused the Beast from the East, a Met Office forecaster said. BRITAIN is set to be battered by blizzards and icy rain this weekend, causing travel chaos as people get set for the last pre-Christmas splurge. At least two inches of snow is forecast for huge swathes of the country, with the rest of the population left drenched with heavy rain. The bitterly cold weekend comes as sub-zero winds from Russia collide with a severe weather front heading east from the Atlantic tonight. The Met Office has already issued Amber weather warnings across most of Scotland, Northern and Central England for freezing rain - a rare phenomenon where ice sheets known as black ice instantly form on roads. THE UK is set for "severe" weather will be drenched by two inches of rain over the next few days with the Met Office issuing a "severe" weather warning. The downpours are set to continue right through tomorrow and well into Saturday across the southwest parts of the UK, finally passing by 6pm. Snowstorms are also set to return next week after temperatures plunged as low as -6C overnight - causing freezing fog and ice on the roads this morning. Cloud and drizzle is set to dampen northern parts of the country tonight while heavy showers will soak the southwest of England. And it will be another frosty start tomorrow, though brighter spells could break up the gloomy conditions in some areas.
