2018 was a big year for sustainable fashion. Stacey Dooley shone a light on the ethical issues inherent to fast fashion business models with her documentary Fashion’s Dirty Secrets, a timely exposé following the news that Burberry had burned $50m worth of unsold stock. As veganism continued to rise, so the sales and proliferation of vegan materials grew. Stella McCartney gave the world vegan leather Stan Smiths, and a vegan silk alternative crafted from orange fibre made the headlines. Simultaneously, multiple goliath brands banned fur, from Versace and Burberry to Jean Paul Gaultier and Chanel, which also banned exotic skins. But there are those brands that have been diligently plugging away at the sustainability cause for decades. One such pioneer is British brand Komodo, which has been producing ethically sourced, organic and natural fibre fashion since 1988 – a time when the term sustainable fashion was not yet in widespread use. Founded by Mark Bloom, also known … [Read more...] about Sitting down with a stalwart of the UK’s ethical fashion arena

A PROPERTY tycoon has been fined £7,500 after keeping neighbours awake with lavish "Ibiza-style" parties at his luxury mansion. Dad-of-two Giles Mackay infuriated his neighbours with the noisy bashes at his £3.5million Kensington mansion. The 56-year-old, who sold his company Hometrack to Zoopla for £120 million last year, has now been forced to shell out £7,420 after pleading guilty to breaching a noise abatement order. Mackay offered to pay the fine on the spot at City of London Magistrates' Court and was slammed for having a "total disregard for his neighbours" for the party last October. The court heard how "professional sound engineers" had been called to the event - with Mackay claiming video cops took at the home showed their voices clearly heard over the noise. But district Judge Mike Snow interjected: "What we know is that sitting in their car with the windows up and engine running 30 metres away, officers could hear the music." Mackay, who claims to … [Read more...] about Dad-of-two property tycoon fined £7,500 after keeping neighbours awake with Ibiza-style ‘noisy’ house parties

SECOND Lieutenant Hamish Mann’s death in 1917 during the Battle of Arras left his family so devastated that they could barely talk about him. His great-niece and great-nephew grew up knowing little about the man who died just after his 21st birthday on a French battlefield in the First World War. But an incredible discovery 100 years after his death has kept his memory alive — and will bring his writings from the frontline to a new generation. By chance, his relatives Rosemary and Robert Stewart found a cherrywood box containing his moving accounts of life on the frontline in their mum’s house and, along with author Jacquie Buttriss, they’ve turned it into a book. Jacquie explained: “When I saw it I was so impressed — I had never come across such a comprehensive collection of First World War writings, fresh from the trenches. And I just thought they were wonderful.” Hamish, from Edinburgh, joined the Black Watch shortly after his 18th birthday … [Read more...] about Family of Brit WW1 soldier find long lost writings after 100 years while cleaning out mum’s house
A CONTROVERSIAL Labour MP and her convicted drug dealer son are living in social housing - despite the pair earning up to £130,000 a year. Shadow development secretary Kate Osamor has faced intense criticism after it emerged that she promoted her son in his House of Commons job, regardless of his conviction for having £2,500 of Class A drugs with intent to supply at Bestival in Dorset last year. Now the Sun on Sunday can reveal that Ms Osamor and her son Ishmael, 29, are living in social housing in Tottenham, north London - despite their earnings classing them ineligible by council guidelines. Haringey Council documents from 2017 state that households earning in excess of £64,200 are not eligible to apply for a social housing property. And it has been reported that 9,000 people are waiting for social housing in the borough - one of the poorest in Britain - and a further 3,000 are living in temporary accommodation due to the limited supply of properties. Ms Osamor, a … [Read more...] about Labour MP and her drug dealer son are living in social housing despite earning up to £130,000 a year
