A female university student reports being raped or sexually assaulted every 12 hours, new figures suggest. A Sunday People survey found there had been 2,000 abuse claims in three years – almost two a day. In the vast majority of cases, male students are the prime suspects. Our research revealed that some male students avoided being kicked out after taking part in a consent training course or signing a good conduct agreement. And some universities stopped victims from speaking out by making them sign non-disclosure papers. Higher Education Minister Michelle Donelan told how she is pushing for tough new measures that could see universities fined up to £500,000 and even risk losing their degree-awarding powers for failing to properly tackle sexual misconduct. She said: “Sexual assault is an abhorrent crime and I am on a mission to stamp it out on university campuses. “This Government is the first to tackle the use of non-disclosure agreements by universities to silence … [Read more...] about University sex attacks reported ‘every 12 hours’ with 2,000 abuse claims in 3 years

UK joins US as protests erupt after ‘devastating’ decision to scrap abortion rights
Protests have taken place in the UK after a "devastating" decision to scrap the constitutional right to abortion in the United States was widely criticised. The US Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that have been in place for nearly 50 years by deciding to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling . It is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half of US states. Prime Minister Boris Johnson described it as a "big step backwards", and hundreds took to the streets of London and Edinburgh to demonstrate against the decision. At a protest outside the United States embassy in Vauxhall, south London, the crowds, some in costumes, held signs reading "Our bodies, Our choice". A protestor holds a placard in support of abortion rights outside the US Embassy in London Judith Orr, vice chairwoman of campaign group Abortion Rights, which claims to have organised the demonstration, said protesters were "full of rage and anger". UK at ‘significant risk’ of heading into recession, report warns
The UK is at “significant risk” of heading into a recession due to the mounting cost-of-living crisis and the Ukraine conflict, a new report has warned. The latest UK economic outlook from KPMG predicts that growth will more than halve to 3.2% this year from 7.4% in 2021, before tumbling to 0.7% in 2023. Global growth is being hampered by the ongoing Ukraine war and lockdowns in China , which have affected commodity prices and restricted supply, while in the UK the knock-on effect on prices is set to see a sharp drop in household and business spending. But Yael Selfin, chief economist at KPMG UK, said “weakening domestic momentum” could put the UK at “significant risk of a mild recession”. Recommended By-elections show voters have run out of patience with Boris Johnson She said: “We expect growing external headwinds and weakening domestic momentum to see economic growth slow significantly over the next year, with a significant risk of a mild … [Read more...] about UK at ‘significant risk’ of heading into recession, report warns
Nigeria records increasing trend of drug abuse: vice president
ABUJA, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria is recording an increasing trend of drug abuse, especially in areas of conflict and in post-conflict settings, such as among the internally displaced persons and in refugee camps, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Monday. This trend has become a "special concern" to the Nigerian authorities, Osinbajo said at an event organized in commemoration of the 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. "As we are in the throes of civil conflict and terrorism, resulting in the displacement of large numbers of our population, the problem is a hydra head," Osinbajo said, noting the prevalence of drug abuse in Nigeria called for attention. He called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders to step up efforts toward breaking illicit drug supply and distribution chains while also commending the agency for an impressive number of drug users it had counseled and … [Read more...] about Nigeria records increasing trend of drug abuse: vice president
Boris Johnson tees up fresh EU clash as hardline Tories to back law-breaking Brexit bill
Hardline Tory Brexiteers are expected to back the Government's plan to override post-Brexit trade rules in Northern Ireland. Legal analysis of the bill by the European Research Group's experts concluded it “properly reinforces” the Good Friday Agreement, which put an end to decades of sectarian violence in the region. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss will tell MPs on Monday that new legislation will fix the problems that parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol have created and help uphold the peace deal. But the move has angered other Tories, including former PM Theresa May , who believe it breaks international law and undermines the UK's global reputation. EU Ambassador to the UK João Vale de Almeida also said the bill, which has its second reading in the Commons, is both “illegal and unrealistic.” ( Image: Getty Images) He told Sky News: "I am afraid that the Government’s track is very probably, unfortunately, a road to nowhere and we would like to avoid that… "We … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson tees up fresh EU clash as hardline Tories to back law-breaking Brexit bill

Family of man wrongly convicted of Jill Dando murder ‘have no faith’ in Met probe
The family of Barry George, wrongly convicted of Jill Dando’s murder , say they have no faith the Met Police will probe bombshell claims she was killed in a case of mistaken identity. Mr George’s sister, Michelle Diskin Bates, said she always thought police knew her freed brother, now 62, was not guilty of killing the Crimewatch host. Now documents submitted to a Paris court suggest Jill may have been killed in error in 1999 by a Russian hitman who meant to target another BBC journalist. Court papers claim the killer was hired by French fashion mogul Gerald Marie, who had been accused of multiple counts of sexual assault, to murder journalist Lisa Brinkworth. Ms Brinkworth wrote in the Daily Mail last month how she had allegedly been sexually assaulted by Mr Marie while going undercover to expose his agency, Elite Model Management. Dad of Rotherham survivor hits out at ‘sickening and atrocious lack of justice’
The dad of a Rotherham survivor says it’s “atrocious” that no police have been arrested over the scandal - yet he was held by officers twice. John, not his real name, told The Mirror how he was ‘arrested’ by police for breaching the peace as he tried to rescue his daughter. He said he admits ‘kicking off’ more than a decade ago but explains he was outside a flat where his daughter was being abused by a paedophile gang. John, who has suffered a stroke and a heart attack, was diagnosed with secondary PTSD, which has been blamed on the trauma his family has endured. To add to the stress they have also received death threats and in one incident a fake gravestone was dumped in front of his bungalow with his name on it.
