NY agency files discrimination complaint against Amazon

May 18, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

A state agency in New York has filed an administrative complaint against Amazon, alleging the e-commerce giant discriminated against pregnant and disabled workers by denying them “reasonable accommodations” and forcing them to take unpaid leave, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday. Amazon has more than 39,000 workers across New York in nearly two dozen worksites, which employ in-house consultants who evaluate accommodation requests, according to a statement from the governor’s office. But the New York State Division of Human Rights, the agency that filed the complaint, alleges the retailer has a policy that allows onsite managers to override recommendations from the consultants, which has led to denials in the worker requests. State law requires all employers to provide reasonable accommodation for pregnant and disabled workers. The governor’s office lists three separate employee requests from pregnant or disabled workers that it says were denied. The complaint also … [Read more...] about NY agency files discrimination complaint against Amazon

Scarborough: FNC ‘Not Selling Republicanism,’ ‘Conservatism’ Anymore — ‘They’re Preaching Racial Hatred’

May 18, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Tuesday, MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough reacted to President Joe Biden’s Buffalo speech. Biden criticized figures in the media or online for spreading lies for “political gain and for profit.” Scarborough praised Biden’s remarks about the Buffalo shooting and suggested there were pundits “on a powerful cable news network” that were no longer “selling republicanism anymore.” Instead, the host said the network was “preaching racial hatred.” “[I] thought it was so important for Joe Biden, President of the United States, to talk about politicians and commentators stirring up hatred for power and for profit,” Scarborough emphasized. “You see, because so many of those people online and on a powerful cable news network, they’re not selling republicanism anymore. They’re not selling conservatism. I know what conservatism is. I’ve been conservative my entire life. I’ve read Buckley. I’ve read Burke. I’ve read Russell Kirk. Georgia students sue over blocked protest against rebel flag

May 18, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

Several Black students who were suspended for trying to protest Confederate flag displays at their school in Georgia have filed a federal lawsuit against their school district and its board members, accusing them of allowing an extensive pattern of racism including “overt bigotry and animosity by some white students and teachers against African American students.” The students, joined by their mothers as plaintiffs, already made news when their protest at Coosa High School was stifled last fall. Now, in their lawsuit filed Tuesday against the Floyd County school district and its board members, they allege an extensive pattern of racism, including white students reenacting the murder of George Floyd and posting it on social media, and a student who carried what appeared to be a whip and told a Black student “we used to whip you.” They also allege unfair punishment: Students are banned from wearing Black Lives Matter shirts, but Confederate flag apparel is acceptable under … [Read more...] about Georgia students sue over blocked protest against rebel flag

US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men

May 18, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

The U.S. Soccer Federation reached milestone agreements to pay its men's and women's teams equally, making the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes matching money. The federation announced separate collective bargaining agreements through December 2028 with the unions for both national teams on Wednesday, ending years of often acrimonious negotiations. The men have been playing under the terms of a CBA that expired in December 2018. The women's CBA expired at the end of March, but talks continued after the federation and the players agreed to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit brought by some of the players in 2019. The settlement was contingent on the federation reaching labor contracts that equalized pay and bonuses between the two teams. Led by Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, American women long have pressed for gender equity. “I feel a lot of pride for the girls who are going to see this growing up, and recognize their value … [Read more...] about US Soccer equalizes pay in milestone with women, men

May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

South Korea's ongoing sex crime crisis forms the focus of a gripping new Netflix documentary— Cyber Hell: Exposing an Internet Horror. The latest program reveals just the tip of the iceberg of sex crimes in the Asian country, which can be traced back to a "deep-rooted gender inequality " and an increase in gender-based violence, Boram Jang, East Asia Researcher at Amnesty International, told Newsweek. "According to the Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice, violent crimes such as murder, robbery and arson are generally decreasing in Korean society, but crimes involving sexual violence are steadily rising," Jang said. Released on Wednesday, the new Netflix documentary follows the exposé of a sexual abuse scandal that saw dozens of women—including minors—allegedly being blackmailed into capturing non-consensual , sexually explicit images and videos of themselves. The footage was shared and sold via online chat rooms—known collectively as the "Nth Room"—on … [Read more...] about ‘Cyber Hell’ only scratches surface of South Korea’s sex crime crisis

Soccer-Qatar World Cup hotels must welcome guests in ‘non-discriminatory manner’ – FIFA

May 13, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

(Reuters) - Hotels that are on the official list of recommended accommodation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are required to welcome guests in a "non-discriminatory manner" or face termination of contracts, FIFA said on Friday. A Scandinavian media survey showed that three of the 69 hotels on FIFA's official list of recommended accommodation will deny entry to same-sex couples. Twenty other hotels said they would accommodate them as long as they did not publicly show that they were gay, while 33 hotels had no issues on booking same-sex couples. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, which will host the World Cup from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18. In a statement to Reuters, FIFA said that, since being made aware of the report, it has been in touch with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and "will ensure that the hotels mentioned are once again made aware of our strict requirements in relation to welcoming guests in a non-discriminatory manner. "Hotels, as well as any … [Read more...] about Soccer-Qatar World Cup hotels must welcome guests in ‘non-discriminatory manner’ – FIFA

Manchester United Ask Fans to Take Active Role in Anti-racism Battle

April 2, 2021 by www.news18.com

Manchester United have set up an online system encouraging supporters to report incidents of racism and other hate crimes. United’s “See Red” campaign follows Arsenal’s launch earlier this week of an action plan called #StopOnlineAbuse. United stars Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Fred have all been subjected to racist abuse this season. Fred hit back saying “we cannot feed that culture” of racism after he was racially abused following his side’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat by Leicester. Former Arsenal star Thierry Henry recently quit all his social media platforms in protest at the rise in internet abuse. “We challenge our fans, and indeed fans of every club, to watch this and think about their own favourite memories, their top teams and their most celebrated players,” United group managing director Richard Arnold said. “How different would those memories be without the diversity of some of the best players in the world who have graced our game and our club? Sadly, … [Read more...] about Manchester United Ask Fans to Take Active Role in Anti-racism Battle
