YSRCP’s ‘social justice tsunami’ will wash away opposition parties: Thammineni Seetharam
Legislative Assembly Speaker Thammineni Seetharam has said the Opposition parties will be washed away in the “social justice tsunami” of the YSR Congress Party government. Mr. Seetharam was speaking at a meeting organised as a part of the bus yatra undertaken to highlight the social justice initiatives of the YSRCP government, at Gajuwaka, near here, on Friday. Wondering what was wrong in naming Konaseema district after B.R. Ambedkar, Mr. Seetharam sought to know whether the opposition parties were opposing or supporting the government’s decision. Former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had once questioned whether any person would like to be born as a dalit, the Speaker said, and wondered whether Mr. Naidu could be called a leader. He said the YSRCP government was implementing welfare schemes for all eligible persons, setting aside differences of caste, community and political affiliations. “Everyone is talking about Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s re-election as Chief Minister,” … [Read more...] about YSRCP’s ‘social justice tsunami’ will wash away opposition parties: Thammineni Seetharam
Coast Guard ship retrieves tsunami buoy off Chennai
The Indian Coast Guard recovered a tsunami data buoy of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) that was drifting from its moored position 255 nautical miles east of Chennai. The moored buoys are equipped with sensors, GPS, beacon lights and satellite transceivers. They collect and transmit oceanographic and meteorological data for providing critical information on tsunami and cyclone hazards. The buoy drifted amid the deteriorating weather during Cyclone Asani. The NIOT informed the Coast Guard regional headquarters (East), Chennai, that deployed an offshore patrol vessel, ICGS Shaunak, for the recovery of the buoy. The ship located and recovered the buoy in adverse weather and sea conditions 278 nautical miles east off Chennai. The buoy was handed over to the NIOT at the Chennai harbour on Sunday, a defence press release said. … [Read more...] about Coast Guard ship retrieves tsunami buoy off Chennai
Munich diocese faces ‘tsunami’of abuse claims
Pope Benedict XVI’s former diocese in Munich says it is facing new allegations of physical and sexual abuse on a daily basis. Elke Huemmeler, head of the diocese’s newly founded sexual abuse prevention task force, says “it is like a tsunami.” Ms. Huemmeler estimates there are about 120 cases on the record to date, around 100 of them at the nearby Ettal monastery boarding school, run by Benedictine monks. She stresses, however, her role is not to deal with the old cases, but help set up the prevention programme. On Friday, her new Task Force on Sexual Abuse Prevention, now officially commissioned and backed by Archbishop Reinhard Marx, began its work. By November, it plans to put forth a comprehensive plan to fight abuse in Roman Catholic church institutions. … [Read more...] about Munich diocese faces ‘tsunami’of abuse claims
Opposition fears return to dictatorship
Allies of Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the presumptive next president of the Philippines, appear set to dominate both chambers of Congress, further alarming activists after the late dictator’s son’s apparent election victory restored his family to power. Ongoing counts from Monday’s vote show they’re set to capture most of the 300-seat House of Representatives and half of the 24-seat Senate that was up for election, and likely their top leaderships. Their family members and siblings have been also proclaimed winners in local posts, reflecting the strong grip of political dynasties on the South-East Asian democracy despite a constitutional prohibition that was never enforced. “It’s going to be problematic because an opposition is very much needed in a democracy,” said Jean Franco, a political science professor at the University of the Philippines. “There has to be alternative ideas and there has to be monitoring of what the executive is doing, otherwise, we will be like North Korea.” … [Read more...] about Opposition fears return to dictatorship
US, Indo-Pacific allies to expand India’s vaccine production
President Joe Biden and fellow leaders of the Indo-Pacific alliance known as the Quad are set to announce a plan to expand coronavirus vaccine manufacturing capacity in India according to administration officials. The effort was to be announced Friday at a virtual meeting of the leaders of Australia, India, Japan and the United States. It comes as the Biden administration is putting greater emphasis on the Indo-Pacific region in the face of growing economic competition from China The effort by the alliance to pump up India’s vaccine manufacturing also comes as the Biden administration and leaders of other wealthy nations have faced calls from France and some global health advocacy groups to donate a small percentage of vaccine produced in the U.S. and other industrialized nations to poor countries. Biden has also fielded requests from allies, including Canada and Mexico, to buy vaccines made in the United States. But the Biden administration has remained … [Read more...] about US, Indo-Pacific allies to expand India’s vaccine production

‘Rivers Remember – The Shocking Truth of a Manmade Flood’ review: What the 2015 Chennai floods taught us
In 2004, soon after the Indian Ocean tsunami left several thousands dead in a deadly attack a day after Christmas, an officer of the Indian Administrative Service, on relief duty in Tamil Nadu, held forth on the efficacy of the immediate response. “Remember,” he said confidently, “there is a robust first line response in Tamil Nadu; it is built into the system. It will kick in at every level, automatically, in times of crisis.” He had fair justification for what he said, for at that time, the response of the State post the tragedy was stunningly well-organised. Eleven years later, after the December 2015 floods in Chennai, it could have been another State all together. In hindsight, it was a watershed moment. December 1, 2015, provided a clear indication that the much-feted, fabled response system of Tamil Nadu had collapsed. And, that included its capital city too. It was also when the people rose as a colossus, resilient, and all this not just on social media, but willing to share … [Read more...] about ‘Rivers Remember – The Shocking Truth of a Manmade Flood’ review: What the 2015 Chennai floods taught us
Abortion resistance braces for demands of a post-Roe future
The day’s first caller begged for help to cross state lines and end her pregnancy. “Please,” the woman from Texas said in her voicemail. “Anything would be greatly appreciated.” Three states away, in southern Illinois , Alison Dreith heard the plea and grinded a toothpick between her teeth. She’d started chewing them last year as a stress reliever the day Texas all but banned abortions. Now the stick darted across her mouth, left to right, right to left. She felt shaky. “It’s starting,” said Dreith. “What we’ve been worrying about for years.” When desperate people can’t obtain abortions near home -- when they need plane tickets, bus fare, babysitters -- they reach out to groups like Dreith’s, the Midwest Access Coalition. The demand has become staggering. Now, for the first time, she would have to tell a caller “No.” The U.S. Supreme Court this summer is expected to gut Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that made abortion a constitutional right. But already, state … [Read more...] about Abortion resistance braces for demands of a post-Roe future
Jobless rate falls to lowest since 1974 but wages lag far behind inflation
Britain’s jobless rate has fallen to its lowest level for nearly 48 years, but workers have seen their pay fall further behind rocketing inflation, according to official figures. The rate of unemployment dropped to 3.7% in the three months to March – the lowest since October to December 1974, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. For the first time, there were fewer unemployed people than vacancies as job openings hit a record 1.3 million, although the fall in the rate – down from 3.8% in the three months to February – was also due to a rise in the number of people dropping out of the jobs market, the figures showed. Calls were mounting for an emergency Budget to offer help amid a crippling cost-of-living crisis as the ONS revealed that regular pay excluding bonuses dropped by 2.9% in March when taking Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation into account – the biggest fall since November 2011. Recommended Coleen Rooney to resume evidence in … [Read more...] about Jobless rate falls to lowest since 1974 but wages lag far behind inflation
