Marjorie Taylor Greene urges U.S. to leave NATO to avoid war with Russia
Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene recently argued that she felt the U.S. should leave NATO to avoid a conflict with Russia . On Wednesday evening, Greene took to her Twitter account to share a Wall Street Journal article reflecting on the increasing tension between the U.S. and Russia following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. She also warned that she believed the U.S. could be dragged into a conflict with Russia if things continued as they are. "The American people do not want war with Russia, but NATO and our own foolish leaders are dragging us into one," she tweeted alongside the article. "A war that no one will win. Escalation over Ukraine, a non-member nation, risking nuclear war is a power-play endangering the entire world. We should pull out of NATO." The Wall Street Journal article headline shared by Greene read: Moscow Pledges Response to U.S. Military Expansion and it focused on Russia's response to the news the U.S. will be making … [Read more...] about Marjorie Taylor Greene urges U.S. to leave NATO to avoid war with Russia
Zelensky asks NATO summit for modern artillery, money
President Volodymyr Zelensky told NATO leaders on Wednesday that Ukraine needs modern weapons and more financial aid in its fight against Russia's invasion. "We need to break the Russian artillery advantage... We need much more modern systems, modern artillery," Mr. Zelensky told a NATO summit in Madrid via video link. He added that financial support was "no less important than aid with weapons". "Russia still receives billions every day and spends them on war. We have a multibillion-dollar deficit, we don't have oil and gas to cover it," Mr. Zelensky said, adding that Ukraine needs around $5 billion a month for its defence. He also called for sanctions on Russia "that will stop its ability to pay for the war". Washington and Brussels have slapped Moscow with unprecedented sanctions over its invasion of pro-Western Ukraine that President Vladimir Putin launched on February 24. The United States and Canada, which are far less reliant on Russia as an energy supplier than … [Read more...] about Zelensky asks NATO summit for modern artillery, money
Russian war in Ukraine gives Putin reason to interfere in midterms: Experts
As the United States edges closer to the midterm elections, intelligence officials expect Russia to ramp up interference efforts in an attempt to disrupt the political process. Some experts believe the Kremlin will engage in cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns with even more fervor this year due to the war in Ukraine. Intelligence reports have laid out significant evidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin authorized cyberattacks and the spreading of propaganda during the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections in an effort to undermine former President Donald Trump 's opponents. The intelligence community is once again concerned about Russia interfering with U.S. elections , and experts believe politicians who are outspoken critics of Putin's war in Ukraine will be the biggest targets. The Kremlin understands that President Joe Biden "played a key role in unifying our allies behind strong sanctions against Russia and strong support for Ukraine," Brian Taylor, an … [Read more...] about Russian war in Ukraine gives Putin reason to interfere in midterms: Experts
NATO invites Finland, Sweden to join as alliance eyes ‘direct threat’ from Putin
LONDON — Permanent American forces stationed in Poland , hundreds of thousands of troops on high alert, and a formal invite for two new Nordic members : If Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in part to ward off NATO, Wednesday made clear his war has achieved the opposite. NATO has now officially invited Finland and Sweden to join the alliance, a sign of just how dramatically the Kremlin's war has upended the previous military landscape in Europe . Earlier in the day, at the start of a summit in Madrid, President Joe Biden announced an increased U.S. military presence in Europe headlined by the first permanent American forces on NATO’s eastern flank and more rotating troops in the Baltic states . The Western alliance also called Russia its "most significant and direct threat" in a joint statement, a notable shift from its description of Moscow as a "strategic partner" a decade ago. Jonathan Eyal, an associate director at the Royal United … [Read more...] about NATO invites Finland, Sweden to join as alliance eyes ‘direct threat’ from Putin
Explained | Kaliningrad is the new epicentre of the Russia-NATO standoff
The story so far: Lithuania, a member of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), on June 18 banned goods subject to EU sanctions from passing through its territory to the Russian exclave Kaliningrad. The sanctions were imposed on Russia after Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Sanctioned goods include coal, metals, construction materials and advanced technology. Russia has called the move a “blockade” and promised a stern response. According to Russian officials, the ban will affect 30-50 per cent of cargo traffic but the goods can be rerouted through the Baltic Sea. Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte refuted Russia’s allegations, saying that the sanctioned goods form only 1 per cent of the total Russian freight transit to Kaliningrad. She also added that passenger transit remains uninterrupted. The implementation of sanctions has strained EU-Russia relations even further. Why is Kaliningrad … [Read more...] about Explained | Kaliningrad is the new epicentre of the Russia-NATO standoff
Marjorie Taylor Greene warns of nuclear war with Russia, calls for protests
GOP Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has raised alarms about the possibility of nuclear war, claiming that President Joe Biden and his administration are "sending" the U.S. into a direct conflict with Russia. Biden and other top administration leaders have consistently said they do not want a war with Russia and will not send troops to fight in Ukraine. However, the president has repeatedly pushed for and sent substantial military aid to the Eastern European nation. In addition, Congress , with wide bipartisan support, has approved billions of dollars in support for Kyiv as it fights against Moscow's aggression. Meanwhile, Greene, a Georgia Republican, has consistently opposed supporting Ukraine with military aid. While she has criticized Vladimir Putin 's invasion, she has contended that Kyiv's forces cannot win and that Western support is only prolonging the conflict. In a Thursday morning Twitter post, she called for protests against the Biden administration's … [Read more...] about Marjorie Taylor Greene warns of nuclear war with Russia, calls for protests
Israel Says Iran Lied on Nuclear Arms, Tehran Likens Him to ‘Boy Who Cried Wolf’
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday stepped up pressure on the United States to pull out of a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, presenting what he called evidence of a secret Iranian nuclear weapons programme in a prime-time address on Israeli TV. Intelligence experts and diplomats said he did not seem to have presented a "smoking gun" showing that Iran had violated the agreement, although he may have helped make a case on behalf of hawks in US President Donald Trump's administration who want to scrap it. Most of the purported evidence Netanyahu unveiled dated to the period before the 2015 accord was signed, although he said Iran had also kept important files on nuclear technology since then, and continued adding to its "nuclear weapons knowledge". Tehran dismissed Netanyahu as "the boy who cried wolf", and called his presentation propaganda. Trump has threatened to pull the United States out of the international deal unless it is renegotiated by May 12. After … [Read more...] about Israel Says Iran Lied on Nuclear Arms, Tehran Likens Him to ‘Boy Who Cried Wolf’
U.S. to bolster its military in Europe
President Joe Biden said Wednesday that the U.S. is enhancing its military presence in Europe for the long haul to bolster regional security after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine . Meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Madrid at the opening of the alliance’s annual leaders summit, Mr. Biden said “NATO is strong and united" and that steps to be taken during the gathering will "further augment our collective strength.” Mr. Biden opened his participation in the summit by announcing that the U.S. is establishing a permanent headquarters in Poland, sending two additional F-35 fighter jet squadrons to the U.K. and will send more air defense and other capabilities to Germany and Italy. “Today I’m announcing the United States will enhance our force posture in Europe and respond to the changing security environment as well as strengthening our collective security,” he said. Mr. Stoltenberg, who earlier on Wednesday said the alliance was facing its biggest challenge … [Read more...] about U.S. to bolster its military in Europe
