The title of the Reddit post this month seemed almost too shocking to be true: “My Qdad snapped and killed my family this morning.” The post — by Rebecca Lanis, a 21-year-old from Michigan — was on a forum dedicated to people who’ve lost loved ones to QAnon, the sprawling conspiracy cult that imagines that Donald Trump is waging a secret war against blood-drinking pedophiles who run Hollywood and the Democratic Party. As The Detroit News would soon report , Lanis’s father, 53-year-old Igor Lanis, had indeed gone on a murderous rampage. Lanis described how her father had fallen down the QAnon rabbit hole after the 2020 election. He wasn’t violent, however, until the morning of Sept. 11, when he shot her mother, her sister and their dog, and was then killed in a shootout with the police. Lanis’s sister, despite being shot in the back and legs, survived. Her mother and the dog did not. The killings weren’t the first to be linked to QAnon radicalization. Last year, a 40-year-old … [Read more...] about Trump’s Heartless QAnon Embrace

Gail Collins: Bret, which do you think is more of a threat to Donald Trump’s political future, the classified document drama at Mar-a-Lago or the legal challenge to his businesses in New York? Bret Stephens: Gail, I suspect the most serious threats to Trump’s future, political or otherwise, are Big Macs and KFC buckets. Otherwise, I fear the various efforts to put the 45th president out of business or in prison make it considerably more likely that he’ll wind up in the White House as the 47th president. How about you? Gail: Sigh. You’re probably right but I’m still sorta hoping New York’s attorney general can hit him in the pocketbook. He’s super vulnerable when it comes to his shady finances — I’m even surprised he can find lawyers who have confidence they’ll keep being paid. Bret: No doubt the Trump Organization was run with the kind of fierce moral and financial rectitude you’d expect if Elizabeth Holmes had been put in charge of Enron. But the essential currency of … [Read more...] about Does It Matter That Investigators Are Closing In on Trump?
In political writing about the federal judiciary, there is a convention to treat the partisan affiliation of a judge or justice as a mere curiosity, to pretend that it does not matter that much whether a jurist was nominated by Ronald Reagan or Bill Clinton or George W. Bush or Barack Obama so long as he or she can faithfully uphold the law. The issue with this convention, as we’ve seen in the legal drama over the classified materials found in President Donald Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago, is that it isn’t equipped to deal with the problem of hyperpartisan, ideological judges who are less committed to the rule of law than to their presidential patron. In particular, this way of thinking about federal courts isn’t equipped to deal with the problem of Trump judges. In the case of the documents, the judge in question is Aileen Cannon of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, nominated by Trump in the spring of 2020 and confirmed by the Senate (with 12 Democratic … [Read more...] about The Wrong Trump Judge at the Right Time Can Wreak Havoc
Ginni Thomas has become a problem. You don’t have to be a left-wing, anti-Trump minion of the deep state to think it’s a bad look for American democracy to have the wife of a Supreme Court justice implicated in a multitentacled scheme to overturn a free and fair presidential election. But that is where this political moment finds us. A longtime conservative crusader, Ms. Thomas increasingly appears to have been chin deep in the push to keep Donald Trump in power by any means necessary. Her insurrection-tinged activities included hectoring everyone from state lawmakers to the White House chief of staff to contest the results. She also swapped emails with John Eastman, the legal brains behind a baroque plot to have Vice President Mike Pence overturn the election that may have crossed the line from sketchy into straight-up illegal. Along the way, Ms. Thomas peddled a cornucopia of batty conspiracy theories, including QAnon gibberish about watermarked ballots in Arizona. Even … [Read more...] about The Eagerness of Ginni Thomas

To the Editor: Re “ As Eligibility Expands, Is Assisted Death Too Easy in Canada? ” (news article, Sept. 19): Suicide is a terrible word, but it is not always a terrible act. The Canadian woman tortured by constant pain looks forward to the assisted suicide her country allows her. Thirty-nine years ago, in New York, my mother was the grateful recipient of an assisted suicide, although it was illegal in the U.S. and still is, in New York and in all but 10 states and Washington, D.C. And even where it’s legal, you have to be patient and wait until the government gives you the OK. But Canada even allows certain applicants to speed up their assessments, although some Canadians don’t approve of that. Given the fast growth of her cancer, my mother was close to death, but in her opinion not close … [Read more...] about Is Assisted Suicide Too Accessible?
In the weeks after the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and his allies were unable to get far in their attempts to prove widespread voter fraud. There were two reasons for that. First, there wasn’t any, as numerous investigations by journalists, expert reports and court rulings showed. But second, Republican election officials in multiple states repeatedly said that their counts and recounts were accurate, and they defended the integrity of the election. For all the pressure that the Trump camp brought to bear, well-trained, civic-minded election workers carried out their duty to maintain the machinery of American voting. Many top Republican Party officials and lawmakers have spent the last two years striking back, and drawn the most attention for their efforts to pass “voter integrity” laws that aim to make voting more onerous under the guise of preventing fraud. From January 2021 to May of this year , just under three dozen restrictive laws had been passed in nearly … [Read more...] about This Threat to Democracy Is Hiding in Plain Sight
This is the second part of my two-part interview with Awards Daily founder Sasha Stone. You can read the first part here . BREITBART NEWS: Moving to the movies: What do you think all of this is doing to the art? I believe the primary responsibility of any storyteller in any medium is to cast a spell and not break it. All the time now, the story stops so the writer or director can step in to yell at us, shame us, lecture us… You look at Jane Fonda, who is never given enough credit… She produced Coming Home , The China Syndrome, and Nine to Five. All three are very political, have an agenda, and all three are fantastic because the stories are beautifully told, the characters are flawed and therefore sympathetic. Jane Fonda gets her point across without breaking the spell. Hollywood doesn’t know how to do that anymore and can’t make left-wing movies without being obnoxious with off-putting smugness. Jane Fonda wanted to change our minds through our hearts. No one’s trying to … [Read more...] about Sasha Stone: The Breitbart News Interview Part 2 – No One Wants to Watch the Oscars Anymore
One prisoner had been dead for so long that when he was discovered lying face down, his face was flattened. Another was tied up and tortured for two days while no one noticed. Bloody inmates screamed for help from cells whose doors did not lock. Those were some of the gruesome details in a 56-page report on the Alabama prison system that was issued by the Justice Department on Wednesday. The report, one of the first major civil rights investigations by the department to be released under President Trump, uncovered shocking conditions in the state’s massively overcrowded and understaffed facilities. Prisoners in the Alabama system endured some of the highest rates of homicide and rape in the country, the Justice Department found, and officials showed a “flagrant disregard” for their right to be free from excessive and cruel punishment. The investigation began in the waning days of the Obama administration and continued for more than two years after Mr. Trump took office. The … [Read more...] about Alabama’s Gruesome Prisons: Report Finds Rape and Murder at All Hours

Stephen Miller, a White House advisor to former President Donald Trump, ripped Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky over the continuing resolution to fund the government during a Tuesday evening Fox News appearance. “This is one of the greatest acts on the part of Mitch McConnell of both political cowardice and political stupidity merged together. This was a rare moment in which the moral course and the expedient course aligned perfectly,” Miller, the founder of America First Legal, told Fox News host Tucker Carlson. “What do I mean by that? Morality, conscience, humanity demand the Republicans force the issue of border security on the CR. Put forth an amendment saying not $1 of the CR, this funding bill, can be used to resettle any more illegal aliens in the U.S. That is what morality demands.” (RELATED: ‘A Hell Of A Lot Of Guts’: Mitch McConnell Praises Kyrsten Sinema) WATCH: Debate on a continuing resolution started Tuesday in the Senate after Democratic Sen. … [Read more...] about ‘Political Cowardice And Political Stupidity’: Stephen Miller Mauls McConnell Over Funding Battle
